1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
This Book is very disappointing. It has over 300 pages, but only about 100 are book chapters. The remaining pages (over 200) are just appendixes describing packages!!!
There are better introductions to these topics in the web, and they are for free...

I liked this book as a beginner to Jini Technology. a very basic starting point with about 100 pages of author descriptions and examples, then several hundred pages of profile listings. The profile listings are very complete and cover everything you need to get going in Jini and J2ME. The examples throughout the book were clear and specific to the points the author is trying to make in each chapter. The personal profile listing in the back of the book is especially handy to have and the book never moves far from my computer - the reference aspect is great. I only wanted a basic introductory book, so I wasn't looking for a 700-page War and Peace type of thing. If you're looking for a huge tome on Jini, you may be better off with another book. But if you're looking for a good (short) basic starting point that's not going to take you a month to get through, this is a really good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good short book, great appendix, May 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
This is a great introductory book. Far from being overwhelming, it gives the technical reader a solid base on which to build. The best part about the book may just be the appendices, however. This is the only book where you can get a complete listing of the RMI and Personal Profiles, which is really useful to have around if you decide to go into the subject later on in more depth.

A topic I found particularly useful and covered here better than other books is the chapter dealing with different Java Technology environments (ie: application servers, CRM, ERP, etc.). It seemed more real-world than some of the future applications and therefore more relative to what engineers may be working on today.

While I wish the narrative by the author could have been a little more detailed in sections, I think the appendices alone make this book worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST JINI/J2ME BOOK OUT THERE, April 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
My boss wanted me to get more familiarized w/JINI on small devices a.s.a.p. and after thumbing through several books on the subject, I settled on this one. Glad I did. It turned out to be an excellent book on the subject. Some key items that I found useful: 1) code comparing MIDP vs. Personal Profile. I was a little unclear on which to use when, but this book cleared up my confusion quickly 2) the almanac - the APIs are listed in alphabetical order making the method signatures really easy to find. Overall I found this book a really good read regarding JINI on small devices. I would definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for both introduction and reference, May 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
This book was specifically recommended to me by an engineering lead at my company as I needed to hone my expertise in this technology.

As for highlights - I get a lot of use out of the J2ME Personal Profile APIs, overviews of both J2ME and Jini technologies were excellent, and the code examples were clear and relevant to developing for small devices. This last point in particular was a real winner because the relevance and clarity of examples is surprisingly weak in many technical manuals.

Cons - My personal preference would have been to have the appendix compiled in one big section rather than broken into three sections, but at least it is still easy to reference.

The quality and clarity of this text was top notch, which was all the more surprising given my limited choice of texts on this topic. I will definitely recommend this book to colleagues with all levels of interest in J2ME and/or Jini.

5.0 out of 5 stars solid reference, May 17, 2002

This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
This book gives a clear and solid introduction to J2ME.
It is a good a reference as a training manual.
I knew a lot before and just wanted another reference but reviewing the examples and stuff was a big bonus.
Complete API reference and *absolutely perfect* examples. People at work are calling me "The J2ME Guy." LOL. Goofy nickname but it does say a lot for the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, April 26, 2002

This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for those interested in diving into the field of Jini via J2ME. The book was well organized, the examples made sense, and it left me feeling like I had a solid foundation on which to build. If you're at all interested in Jini and small devices, this book is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars just what i needed, May 5, 2002
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
i selected this book before any reviews were posted. the reviews since then that comment on clarity and completeness ring true with my impression after going through it. it's definitely not a reference alone but even just in that regard it's worthwhile. i've had some on the job experience with jini but never got a comprehensive introduction. i wanted to solidify what i already knew as well as fill in the blanks. this book isn't tagged as a learn-in-21-days kind of thing but it contains all that you'd find there and more - introduction to j2me, complete examples (two of which i've already used almost directly) and full reference. topics are explained as if the reader doesn't have previous experience with jini/j2me but go well beyond introduction. obviously composed by someone who is expert in the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good starting point, April 26, 2002
By
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
I thought this was a really good introduction to Jini using J2ME, which is exactly what it claims to be. I needed a starting point and this book did the job pretty well. This is also the only place I could find the complete profiles. It's a convenient reference. While I agree the non-appendix part of this book could have been a bit more detailed, I still think it's a great kickoff point. I would recommend it for anyone interested in Jini using J2ME.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper, April 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Developing Jini(TM) Applications Using J2ME(TM) Technology (Paperback)
I find it to be a shame that this book has even been published. For starters, out of its 340 pages, 233 are simply unannotated API (J2ME Profiles). The remaining 107 pages are a very shallow description of Jini and J2ME, hardly providing any practical advice about use of Jini on small devices.
Book's examples assume knowledge of Jini and RMI and lack any explanation. There are numerous errors and many inaccurate and misleading statements.
I was truly disappointed with this book, and feel obliged to share my opinion.
