Book Description

February 1998 Mcgraw Hill Training Series
This text demonstrates how a low priority on learning and widespread wasteful training has stemmed from the hierarchical organization, and has been reinforced by short-term financial views. Using examples from all sizes of business, it argues that the most successful way organizations can counteract the resulting low performance is to develop a genuine team working culture. The book lists traditional barriers to trainers' effectiveness and suggests strategies for getting top management commitment to culture change for overcoming these barriers. It also considers the main problems faced by trainers and managers, providing solutions in a clear fashion.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The traditional and still widespread hierarchical organization, constrined by short-term financial goals, is often trapped into: giving low priority to learning, skills and empowerment; wasteful training - when it occurs; ineffective deployment of TQM and HRM techniques; downsizing when faced with superior competition, further eroding morale and skill capability. This puts many western businesses, large and small, into a weak position against global competition, as high levels of knowledge and skill utilization - needed for continuous innovation and efficiency improvement - become paramount for survival. Developing a learning culture is a clear, easy to read practical guide which shows you how to break the downward spiral. Using a unique examination of the cultural dimension of learning and training and examples, and exmaples from successful businesses of all sizes, the book considers the main problems faced by trainers and managers and offers a solution. Gives a blueprint for effective work-based and external training; Provides arguments and evidence to help gain top management commitment to removing the barriers to continuous learning and cost-effective training; Develops a strategy showing how to implement radical culture change, or build on changes already begun.
