This work addresses the challenges of electronic publishing and puts issues of collection development into perspective, providing students and practitioners of library and information science with a broad understanding of the collection development process. The book covers all phases of collection development-from needs assessment, policies, and the selection process (theory and practice) to publishers, serials, protection, legal issues, and censorship and intellectual freedom. Each chapter has been expanded and updated with new material and reading lists. In addition, a chapter that is new to this edition deals with e-serials; and two appendixes contain samples of policies related to electronic concerns. It is an excellent survey of the state of the art of collection development and a comprehensive text.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Last revised in 1995, this comprehensive collection development textbook has been updated to "reflect the changing environment of collection management," particularly in the area of electronic resources. Because of the necessity of keeping the final book to a reasonable length, materials from earlier editions are now for the first time available on the Internet. In particular, what had been Chapter 4 ("Selection Process: Theory") and two appendixesA"Book and Electronic Collection Policies" and the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) "Statement of Current Perspective and Preferred Practices for the Selection and Purchase of Electronic Information"Acan be found at lib.lmu.edu/dlc4 and www.lu.com.AWWW

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Keep, February 10, 2001
By
Susan Titus (Jacksonville, NC United States) - See all my reviews
I have the 4th Edition and found it very helpful in getting a feel for what collection development is all about. I plan to keep this book as a guide to use in my role as a media specialist. Valuable information of censorship, book reviews, and writing a collection development policy. Written in an easy to understand, "non-techno" way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Information rich!, March 21, 2001
This review is from: Developing Library and Information Center Collections: (Paperback)
Evans does a great job of giving the amateur an education in collection topics such as censorship, development policies, serials, electronic resources, government documents and many other pressing issues. I had to read this book for a class and, although, I thought the information he provided was valuable, it was not represented in a very endearing way. To say the least, it was dry!
