About the Author

Lynnette R. Porter is a writer and teacher who has taught online, web-enhanced, and on-site classes at several universities in the United States. She earned her M.A. in English and technical writing and a Ph.D. in English, with specializations in rhetoric, composition, and technical communication. Her research interests are varied, and she has presented conference papers or currently has papers under consideration for several international professional associations, including the Society for Technical Communication, Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, Asia-Pacific Chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education, National Business and Career Education Association, the Popular Culture Association, American Businesswomen’s Association, and Association for Business Communication. She is an associate fellow in the Society for Technical Communication.

More About the Author

Writing has always been a passion. I'm the sole author, co-author, or editor of 14 books so far. As a contributing editor to PopMatters, I write a monthly film/television column, Deep Focus. Add introductions or chapters in another dozen books, plus journal articles and reviews, and you can see why my colleagues think I'm a bit obsessed with the research-and-writing process. I only hope that I'm passing on a few insights about communication (and maybe inspiring greater interest in film or fantasy and science fiction lit) as I teach students at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida. When I'm not absorbed with a new project or classes, I like to travel. Favorite destinations include Scotland, Wales, Canada, and New Zealand--and I always have a book or two with me for the long flights.

This is a comprehensive, easy-read that brings every aspect of online curriculum development into focus before it marches into the details of practical, successful class management. Through it all, Lynnette's constant thread is defining the role of the teacher in creating an online community that works. She is an excellent guide. Whether your target is an online class or a curriculum, read this one. For the technically challenged, it covers all the tools. For the technology-savy, it draws attention to the human element. Even if you're already involved with online education, you'll find fresh ideas here.

There was not much of substance in this book. The information was simplistic and really a survey of concepts. Not at all a go-to, idea filled resource.

I am a college professor migrating into the "new" world of teaching online. If I had to recommend a book for "How To" this is it. A must read for anyone attempting to go there!
