This review is from: Developing Students' Mathematical and Scientific Literacy Through Text: Effective Content Related Reading Practices (Paperback)
One of the most frustrating things as a math or science teacher is when the problem asks a student to do something, but they do the opposite. It happens so often that it makes us want to throw our hands up in the air, sighing once again, "Would you just read the directions?" With the advent of text-heavy books and summative assessment questions, we teachers might despair that our students might not be able to navigate the text enough to actually show the practical skills they do know in mathematics or science.

This book by David Pugalee is very helpful for content area teachers who haven't had a lot of training on specific reading strategies. It is densely packed with practical tools for developing vocabulary and reading comprehension in the specialized text we see in mathematics and science. I have had a lot of success using these strategies with middle school students and teachers, and I think that they would be useful for others as well.
