Book Description

September 1997
A practical, structured course for watercolour painters with some experience - continuing where the "Watercolour Landscape Course" left off. Illustrated with David Bellamy's evocative watercolours, the book follows a similar approach to the previous course and is divided into four main sections: the preparatory planning stages, with advice on choosing materials and working on location; guidelines on how to give your paintings more impact through imaginative composition, lighting and mood; more exciting watercolour techniques; and specific projects and exhibition work. Also included are a number of practical exercises, relating to paintings featured in a gallery at the end of the book, and several step-by-step demonstrations.

From the Publisher

In Developing Your Watercolors, the emphasis is on the importance of direct observation and those techniques that will enable you to build on your existing skills. The book is designed to encourage a sense of achievement at every stage. The first section looks at suitable art materials and getting the most out of sketching and painting a location, while the second part is concerned with using source material effectively. Bellamy then moves on to a discussion of color and techniques and concludes with suggestions for continuing your progress and exploring new directions. Superbly illustrated with David Bellamy’s own paintings, this is an excellent source of instruction and inspiration for all aspiring watercolorists. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Developing Your Watercolors, May 2, 2009
This is a well written follow-up to the Landscape Course book. Bringing up all kinds of tidbits you haven't thought of. Interspersed with demos to help you on the way.
There is a section on Sketching ("Before sketching, consider how you observe things. By this I do not mean simply looking at objects and recognizing them as a gate or a horse, but seriously looking at features in a considered way, in order to ascertain how that feature sits in the landscape...") There are lots of little sketches to demonstrate a point and painted sketches as well as finished paintings. Lots of well explained 'how-to-do-this' and personal anecdotes. Every chapter has exercises to do that will get the brain thinking and paintings to improve.
I really like this book! I have learned a lot and enjoyed every minute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bellamy the Master Watercolourest, January 18, 2007
This book, and the video that came out about the same time, are among the best watercolour publications that I have seen. I am an ardent fan of David Bellamy and heartily recommend this and any other of his books to all watercolour painters, whether expert or, like me, novice. They are full of information and ideas that can help make us all better painters. I have almost all his books and videos and never tire of looking at them and learning.
