Exactly what I needed! February 26, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I looked around for weeks trying to find training to get MCTS certified. There is no classroom training available where I live unless you go to a college, and that is too expensive. Also trying to figure out which classes to take that provide the information I need to pass the exam is almost impossible. With the Joes2Pros books, I get exactly what I need. Just follow the chapters on at a time. Read the information, follow along with the SQL code, do the skill checks, the "points to ponder" and then the "bug Catching" section and you will learn!
I would definitely recommend spending the $49.00 on a Developer version of SQL Server 2008 R2 also. The Express version is free, but it does not support all of the features the books cover, like partitioning tables (in Book Three). With the Express version, when you run the setup scripts for the Partitioning Tables section, you will get an error that says something like "Only the Enterprise version of SQL Server supports Table Partitioning." With the Developer version, it will run with no errors.

Great series so far February 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This series is very well written and coming from an Access database background, it has really helped me become comfortable working with SQL Server. As I've gotten further into the series, some typos and things pop up, but nothing that would distract you from learning. The code used is all downloadable from the website which makes it very easy. The only knock I give the series as that it's not always clear upfront if the particular aspect being discussed (such online indexing) is only available on the Enterprise edition of SQL Server. So some chapters you can't practice with the code and just have to read up on it (I have the Developer edition). I am planning on getting MCTS certified after completing the books, so I will update on whether this series is effective in doing just that.

Makes learning easy ! May 20, 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this product because of the outstanding reviews it was given. I am somewhat familiar with MS SQL but far from an expert. I will say I do have several books on the subject but I would trade all of them for this set alone. I understand that Rick Morelan will be working on more books for the 2012 certification and I cannot wait.

The books are an easy read. You can tell from the very first chapter that you read that you have a better understanding of the subject matter. This book clearly states the facts in language you can cleary understand. The pictures are a great help in understanding what you are looking at and will accomplish. It explains all of the bars, fields and details that you see on the screen and their function. You get a full understanding of what each component does while you are following along with the steps and learning not only how to write SQL and create databases but you are getting a full instruction on the software package itself. This is the greatest guide to learning a software package while training you on how to become a DBA. If you absorb half of the information in this 5 volume set, you will be ahead of the game ! Thanks Rick !!
