5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for those interested in language development
Jean Berko Gleasn is a leader in the fields of psychology and linguistics. This book is a comprehensive introduction to language acquisition. It is easy to follow, yet thorough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written

Anyone who actually has to read this book - for a class, for personal interest - will find that is poorly written. It is imprecise and repetitive as a whole and even within each chapter. The book could easily be written in 1/4 of the current 512 pages.

Its format seems to be its downfall -different authors for each chapter. Yet even this cannot...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, August 16, 2007
This review is from: Development of Language, The (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
Gleason's book is great because it offers works from other authors, so that you can gain the perspective of other experts in the field. This book really helped me understand the development of language. The book was particularly useful for me, because I am studying to be a School Psychologist.

This review is from: Development of Language, The (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
I appriciate Gleason's addition of multi-authors (for each chapter), specializing in sub-specialties. I am learning alot!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection of ideas, January 15, 2009
It's interesting how different readers can experience a book in such very different ways. Unlike the reviewer who faults the organization of this text, I found the mix of "voices" in the book to be refreshing. While there is perhaps some overlapping of ideas, ultimately the approach creates opportunities for discussion and encourages further thinking about the topics addressed. I recommend this for students (or anyone interested in language development) who want a varied approach to the subject as discussed by some of the leading thinkers in the field.

4.0 out of 5 stars okk, September 25, 2010

Book was a bit more "used" and battered than I anticipated. Shipped right on time. Book itself is for school. Content is useful, but a bit try.

Its format seems to be its downfall -different authors for each chapter. Yet even this cannot explain its baffling chapter-internal arrangements.

If you care for your students, you will seek out a more readable book or begin a replacement for it. If you are considering reading this book out of interest -do not. It will discourage you, ... just as it does the majority of students who must suffer from its reading.
