2.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, well...
I teach Psychology and have used this book for many semesters. Heck, I even used this book as a student in grad school when it was 1/10 the size and 1/100th the price. It has become burdensome to students, in addition to cost. It tries to do too much and is ill suited to today's student. I have tried like heck to get us to change the text but the "old guard" won't budge!

This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological, psychological, and social factors on growth. This book will definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dry, March 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of the most dry and boring textbooks I've had to read. The only textbook more boring than this one, that I can remember, was an anatomy book. I have a strong interest in psychology, so for me to find a psychology book to be boring, it must be pretty bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars I used this book for my Dev. Psych class, March 13, 2004

This review is from: Development Through Life: A Psychosocial Approach (Hardcover)
The chapters are long, about 40 pages each, but I found this book to be excellent for examining the development through the lifespan. If you could see my copy, it's underlined all over the place, there's some great material in this book. I am considering having children and will definately refer to this book if and when I do. It basically tells you how to NOT mess up your kids!

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in Clarity, September 23, 2011

In an effort to teach their own idea of a "revised" psychosocial theory, the authors blur their own ideas with Erikson's original ideas, and in the process fail to fully explicate the classic psychosocial theory. They should have written this in STAGES in order to accomplish a strong overview of Erikson and Freud, adding their own ideas afterwards. Otherwise, it's unclear what they're building on in the first place. I really think it would have been more educational (and, frankly, more FAIR) to fully develop the original theories and then add additional information or research afterwards. Recommend DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE LIFESPAN by Laura E. Berk, as a great alternative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some Kindle Edition Charts Unreadable, No Page Numbers, July 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am very unhappy about the Kindle Edition of this excellent book, which I use on Kindle for PC. Some of the important charts in the book that have small type are virtually illegible and become more illegible when they are blown up. The Kindle Edition does not include page numbers, substituting thousands of useless and confusing location numbers, making it impossible to provide proper citations necessary for graduate school coursework or proper APA style citation, as well as making it impossible to relate kindle edition to page references given by instructors or fellow students in class. Very hard to navigate through the Kindle edition. I am sorry that I wasted my money on it and find that it requires a lot of extra time to find what I need to for my assignments. Frankly, I am very upset. I downloaded a trial version of this book from a competitor, using the competitor's interface and found it much easier to use. I chose to buy the Kindle version because it is not time-limited (as is the competitor's (which I thought would be a big plus) but was shocked at the inferior Kindle for PC interface and lack of page numbers, particularly since the free books included with Kindle for PC had page numbers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased with purchase, October 18, 2008

I received the book faster than promised. The book is exactly what I wanted. Priced $30 less than our school's bookstore. It seems the pages are very thin, but it does not hurt your ability to read them. Although it might be a problem if someone wants to use a highlighter because it might show through to the other side of the page.
