5.0 out of 5 stars Ayres' Masterful Analysis of Praxis in Children, March 19, 2000
By
Dr. Susan Stallings-Sahler (Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Developmental Dyspraxia & Adult-Onset Apraxia: A Lecture Prepared for Sensory Integration International (Paperback)
Ayres' classic treatise on developmental dyspraxia is a must-read for all students of early brain development. It contains much of the foundational literature upon which she based the six praxis sub-tests of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test battery: (1)Constructional Praxis; (2)Design Copying (a measure of graphic praxis); (3)Postural Praxis; (4)Praxis on Verbal Command; (5)Oral Praxis; and (6)Sequencing Praxis. Recent neuroscientific research is affirming what Ayres suspected in the 1980's--that praxis is not just about "motor planning", but is the foundation for organizing language AND cognitive thought. "Praxis is to the physical world what language is to the social world." Ayres was a scientist and clinician ahead of her time, and only now is her work finally beginning to be appreciated.
