Industrial Rising?,
By "alpha_krowmega" (Decatur, AL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deviant (Audio CD)
Well... This is definately one of the better Pitchshifter albums, in my opinion... It has a great combination of metal, punk, industrial, goth, and techno, which makes for yet another interesting experience as it is not heard much nowadayz.... While not as direct and soul-driven as the lyrics of previous albums, the lyrics of "Deviant" still get the point across and smash the windows of any illusory ideas as to what they feel. The music itself is masterfully recorded and played with much more maturity while still bearing the intensity and angst of the Pitchshifter everyone knows (if you know who they are). My favorite tracks would have to be "Wafer Thin", "Hidden Agenda", "Scene This", and "Everything's ... (Again)".... All worthy tracks that are definately worth a listen..... Almost sheer perfection in their form.... If I had to compare them to anyone it would be my favorite band, Ministry, because of their (Pitchshifter's) intelligient lyrics that still somehow remain vague at times, their beautifully crunching, stop-motion, de-tuned guitar riffs, and electronic out-of-this-world technoish drum beats... If you need a new fix, or something that will grab your attention (along with everyone else's attention), then get a copy of this. I will guarantee that you won't be disappointed in any way.

At Least In The Top Five For Album Of The Year,
By Amir X. Tajakin (Orange County, California) - See all my reviews

Pitchshifter are definitely one of my favorite bands these days. They are one of the most original bands out there, and although Deviant is not their best work (Infotainment by far) it still packs a sonic and quirky punch. Each song is really quite different, but they all fuse the same kind of styles together: Electronica, Industrial, Alternative, and Punk, while remaining fiercely independent (meaning they aren't another Staic-X/Apartment 26 copy). They've been doing their thing for quite some time now, and they seem to have matured with every album they put out. This one is not as fast paced, but it still is really good music. The guitars are stop/start kind of thing and they carry a heavy crunch. The commentary is smart and quirky, and makes a lot of sense. I also like the cover art which is a cross between the Pope and The Queen ... My favorite songs are Condescension, Hidden Agenda, As Seen On TV, and Wafer Thin. They have and amazing live show, and I'd suggest checking out Static-X, Apartment 26, Kill II This, and Ministry if you like this.

again Pitchshifter has changed more or less completely of style.
they have been doing black metal at their beginnings , then a fusion of punk rock and drum and bass : on this one the pop and punky sides are more accentuated, although there is still a synthetic smell to their music. hard to classify, impossible in fact...."Dead battery" is already a classical song.... those guys are not followers, they make the trends.... the cherry on the cake: jello Biafra comes to "sing" on " as seen on TV",whose beat will make your loudspeakers explode....go for it NOW......

Once again Pitchshifter seems to have outdone themselves. With cuts like "Hidden agenda" and "Condescension" How can one go wrong. With Pitchshifter's hard-edged combination of punk, techno, and metal; and the brutal social commentary, this easily became one of my favorties.

As far as accessible pop-metal goes, Pitchshifters 'deviant' is up there with the likes of Spineshank's 'Height of Callousness'and Fear Factory's 'Digimortal'.First of all i have to say that the cover art is great. Secondly the music is great and individual. Tracks 3, 4 and 12 really impress while tracks 1, 2, 7 and 9 are all very good. Infact there isn't really a bad song on this radio friendly album. They appeal to diversifying nu-metal fans and have a industrial dance style going on which works very well. This is also much better than there previous effort (although others tend to disagree). Thoroughly recommended, but if you like girlie singing stick with Lost Prophets and Incubus.

very good,

i agree that pitchshifter has changed from their previous album, but i wouldnt go so far as to say they sound anything like limp bizkit (thank god), as one of the previous reviewers said. the entire cd is listenable, but some are quite a bit better than others. i would choose tracks one and seven as my favorites. as good as this cd is, it isnt as good as www.pitchshifter.com. i hope their style of music influences some other bands, because it can be a beautiful thing. heheh.

PSI stilll rocks,
By Jake (Windham, Ct USA) - See all my reviews

I eagerly anticipated the release of this album, knowing whatever came out of it would be excellent. Musically, it was a dramatic change when compared to other albums such as pitchshifter.com, or infotainment? I like the somewhat mellow approach to many songs, but dont get discouraged, they still have the heavier stuff like "keep it clean," "dead battery," and "wafer thin." (my personal favorites) They just keep getting better and better after every release. people complain that they are going mainstream, they change for the times, and what not. At first they resembled one of my favorite bands, ministry, but look at them now, they have stepped away from that, and now have their own unique blend of techno, rock, industrial. they are on a plain all by themselves. lyrically and musically, they cannot be outdone by any rock, or industrial band out at the time. This album is their best to date. PSI ROCKS

pitchshifter is not the same!,

When i first heard about deviant, i thought it would be something great (judging by previous records and the way Ps developed in their musical style). But after finally listening thru it i suddenly realised PS was trying to go mainstream. Their new CD is so much alike with Korn or limp bizkit music it was terryifing. I couldn't understand why Ps chose to opt out of the electronics towards more punk/rock style. In general this CD has some good tracks (2 to be exact), but it not deliver the goods like the previous CD's did. I AM SORELY DISSAPOINTED!

What happened to Pitchshifter?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Deviant (Audio CD)
The Pitchshifter sound that has been forged over their last 5 or so releases, culminating wonderfully with "www.pitchshifter.com" has here been stripped to a watered-down sound that could have come from any of 1,000 other bands who are wasting our time (and money) these days. The Pitchshifter formula of brutal guitars mixed with programed drums and other industrial and electronic affects was unlike anything else on the musical scene. That sound is completely gone on this CD--reducing their punishing onslaught to something that MTV would have little problem broadcasting. A very disappointing CD.
