Book Description

In Glory's world, different means deviant—and dead.

In a post-apocalyptic world, where the earth is buried by asteroid dust that’s mutated the DNA of some humans, an orphaned sixteen-year-old, Glory, must hide and protect her younger brother. If their Deviant abilities are discovered, they’ll be expunged—kicked out of the dome to be tortured and killed by the Shredders. Glory would give anything to get rid of her unique ability to kill with her emotions, especially when Cal, the boy she’s always liked, becomes a spy for the authorities. But when her brother is discovered, and she learns their father, who was expunged for killing their mother, is still alive, she must escape the domed city that’s been her entire world.

Outside in the ruins, they’re pursued by the authorities and by sadistic, scab-covered Shredders who are addicted to the lethal-to-humans dust now covering the planet. Glory’s quests to transport herself and her brother to safety make up the thrilling and fascinating first volume of The Dust Chronicles.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Glory is a Deviant in McGowan's action-packed post-apocalyptic novel (Amazon Children's Pub., 2012). If the authorities in Haven, the domed city where remnants of the human race live, find out, the 16-year-old will face the same fate as her father who killed her mother and crippled her younger brother Drake years ago. He was forced into the hostile wasteland outside Haven where toxic dust and Shredders await anyone the authorities deem unfit to remain. It's been that way ever since Earth was nearly destroyed by asteroids. Glory tries to balance training and get extra rat meat to feed Drake, while dreading the possibility that her secret will be discovered. The story quickly gives enough background about Glory and those people most important to her, pulling listeners into an intriguing blend of action and tension that will hold their attention. Her friend Cal joins the Ethics Committee right before they get their dating license, but Burn, another Deviant, confronts her with news that her father isn't dead. When the authorities arrive, Glory thinks they're about to take Drake, so she and Burn escape with him. The action and tension as they try to elude Comps and Shredders on their way to find Glory's dad as well as some unexpected surprises near the end of the book will grip listeners. Tara Sands's narration makes each voice sound unique and natural. Glory's teen angst sounds somewhat whiny for a short while near the middle of the book, but vanishes when the action picks up again. "McGowan launches The Dust Chronicles with a bang, painting her post-apocalyptic world with a dark brush and featuring a strong-willed and determined protagonist. Readers will be immediately transported to this world where businessmen rule the job-based class system." —Sabrina Cooper, RT Book Reviews, November 2012

"This first installment in an interesting new post-apocalyptic dystopian series finds the Earth choked with dust that creates paranormal abilities in some humans. ... McGowan keeps the suspense throbbing throughout most of the novel, with new challenges constantly confronting the teens. —Kirkus, Sept. 2012

"A deliciously dark, harrowing world, brightened by dazzling characters and sparkling prose." —Kelley Armstrong

"A tense thriller with a strong, beating heart at its center. Glory and her impossible choices will keep you glued to the page. I'm still trying to catch my breath!" —Diana Peterfreund

"...a worthy read. Readers who enjoy dystopian books will gravitate to this novel." —Library Media Connection May/June 2013

Just this morning I picked up and starting reading Deviants by Maureen McGowan and kept turning the pages until I had devoured it in one fantastic reading binge. The dystopian setting with the kick-ass teenage heroine rebelling against the oppressive regime has been done before, but if you include good story-telling, fast action and likable characters, it is never a waste of a good experience.

Glory, all of sixteen and an orphan, lives in the futuristic and domed city of Haven. The enclosure prevents invasion from the toxic dust that has encircled the earth since the meteors hit and invasion from Shredders, cruel cannabalistic creatures that inhale the toxic dust to survive. No one leaves Haven unless they are "exed" by the government and thrown outside the dome at the mercy of Shredders while the public watches on big screen. Glory's father was exed after killing her mother and crippling her little brother, Drake. Glory's father was also a Deviant, a mutant, a creature with powers, a pariah almost worse than a Shredder. That leaves Glory with two secrets: she has hidden her crippled brother from the government, and she is also a Deviant. And with her Deviant power, she can kill.

Hiding her identity from everyone, including her best friend and her new boyfriend, is difficult when all Glory wants is to be Normal. Then one night, a stranger confronts her in a dark alley and turns her world upside down; she has been deceived about her father's death. This stranger, Burn, wants to take her and Drake out of Haven to save them from an inevitable discovery and exing by the government. A surprise visit from the compliance officers gives Glory no choice, she and Drake follow Burn out of Haven and...well, you just have to read the rest yourself because it just gets better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Same old, same old for the YA fantasy genre March 24, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Deviants is about a girl with special powers that does not know how beautiful she really is and has two boys that "love" her, yet treat her like crap. Sound familiar? If not, you have never read a YA fantasy novel that was written after Twilight. The author brings nothing new to the genre and purposefully draws the book out with unneeded plot lines, so of course, it can be a series. I am tired of YA fantasy for these reasons, but I thought this book sounded interesting. I was greatly mistaken. It tried to be a combination of X-Men and The Hunger Games, but failed.

The protagonist, Glory, lives in a post-apocalyptic world where the ruling class exploit the people under their control. They brainwash them and kill anybody who is unproductive, even if they have a viable illness or disability, and they publicly execute Deviants, people who have superpowers. Despite all this, Glory retains her innocence, which is just not believable, and never becomes hardened or scarred by her horrifying past, the society in which she lives, or the fact that she is a Deviant. She comes across as a regular, gum-smacking teenager at an average high school. The effect such a world should have had on everyone is not shown nor portrayed realistically, making the setting just an excuse to have a boring love triangle.

Cal is one side of the lurve triangle. He is one-dimensional and creepy and makes Glory blush every five seconds. YAWN. Burn is the "bad boy." By bad boy, I mean he is always grumpy for no reason, talks down to her, glares at her, jerks her around physically like she is is property, but secretly likes her. Please, YA authors, just stop. Don't insult my intelligence and try to pass off rude, abusive behavior as "love.

3.0 out of 5 stars An adventurous and thrilling start to a new series October 30, 2012
By woven
3.5 stars

Three years ago Glory's father murdered her mother and paralyzed her younger brother Drake. Her father turned out to be a Deviant, which are humans with powerful and usually dangerous abilities. He was thrown out of the domed city of Haven and perished in the hands of the Shredders, psychotic creatures that enjoy torturing and killing humans. Since then, Glory has been taking care of her brother in secret. Because after the death of their parents, Glory and Drake have discovered that they are Deviants as well. And Deviants aren't welcomed in Haven.

With its fast pace and intriguing setting, Deviants was a book I found myself easily getting sucked into. The story was unique, yet familiar at the same time. For instance, the people in charge of Haven aren't that different from other authority figures found in most post-apocalyptic novels. They are strict, controlling, and keeping many secrets from the citizens. But I think that's to be expected in a world that was nearly destroyed. What stood out for me in this book was the world outside Haven. The Deviants and Shredders and how they came to be. I can't get into much detail, otherwise it would be a spoiler, but I wasn't expecting some of the things that happened and were revealed in this book. It made some moments pretty shocking and exciting.

Then there's the main character Glory. She's a determined girl who basically had to grow up quickly and become the parent to her younger brother. I like that she loves Drake and will do anything and everything to protect him. I did get frustrated with her a lot though. She had a tendency to not trust people and jump to conclusions quickly.
