Much more than "just another metal album.", August 30, 2000

My first exposure to Saigon Kick was "The Lizard." After hearing that incredible album, I was a bit put-off by DITD. Then I listened to it again. And again. And again and again and again.... How can you describe this band? The vocals are awesome - powerful but without that over-dubbed, over-the-top feeling you might remember from a lot of those 80's metal bands. The music always has impact, even when it's not necessarily slamming. "Going On" is a perfect example, the acoustic guitars having an uncommonly rich sound. "Everybody" is a great ball of fun, and "So Painfully" is as addictive as it is smile-inducing. This is one of those albums that wanders a bit from sound to sound, and is all the better for it. Highly recommended, Saigon Kick fan or not.

Absolutely breathtaking, September 19, 1999

It is a very difficult choice to make, but this just might be the best album they ever did. This band has created one sonic masterpiece after another and really shows what they're capable of on 'Devil'. It is more like Water than the first two albums in it's diversity. It is more like the first two than Water in it's heavier edge. So it's really the best of everything that was, and is Saigon Kick. There is no acceptable excuse for not owning this incredible cd. Make it part of your collection as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did.

A 3.9 From the Russian Judge, June 5, 2007

Yes, Matt has left the building. He was a large presence of Saigon so should the wailing begin? Well, listen to this album a couple of times (as George Michael would say) without prejudice, and realize that although the ingredients are different, it's still a delectable pastry.
Matt was/is fantastic, but should that be the end? If so, apply that same passionate thought to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Thin Lizzy, The Church... heck, even Van Halen.
What the boys pull off is something a bit different from the pack, and thank goodness for that. Pete 2nd guitar is another axe in the shield wall and Jason's voice is compelling and also fitting.
For potential shoppers. this album loses a bit of the steam and punch that surrounded the first two albums, but it gains a sort of majestic and elevated touch. Like Love/ Hate and Devin Townsend, Saigon Kick dared to make music that skewed the formula. Water is an album that is marked by high peaks and a couple of valleys (not too low, mind you). Devil in the Details plants it's flag off the peak, yet only a half-day's hike away. Much further down the mountain, you'll find most of the offerings from the 90's. Partake and be glad.
