His new suspense thriller, The Devil Inside, has those two books beat by a landslide when it comes to hot-button issues, but neither Boyd nor West Beach Books are divulging the full nature of the plot.
If you havent read it, dont ask. If you have read it, dont tell, laughs Boyd. Its time to let the reader unravel the mystery right along with the characters.
Heres what they are telling about The Devil Inside: Kordell Christie is a respected gay businessman. Mario Cervantes is a childhood friend who reappears out of the blue. On the surface, the two men get along great and seem destined for romance; but a day into their reunion, Mario is accused of being a sex offender (read: child molester), setting the stage for a frantic search for justice and the truth, something both men have 72 hours to figure out before their lives become a living hell.
At the heart of this story is the pursuit of the truth surrounding the possible child molestation incident, says Boyd, and the larger truth regarding what happens to us as individuals and as a society when our sexuality is repressed. But its also fiction full of suspense and I must say, even I was spooked writing some of this stuff.
So does Boyd set out aiming for these sensitive, emotionally charged themes in his novels?
Nah, he shrugs. Im a black gay man with HIV walking around in a world where people are constantly making incorrect assumptions about me. My life, by definition, is emotionally charged. Im just speaking my mind and doing my thing through my writing.

This review is from: Devil Inside, The Suspense Thriller, The (Paperback)
A well-developed, involved mystery-suspense novel, with some sci-fi overtones, featuring fleshed-out, racially diverse, realistic characters most gay, lesbian or bisexual readers will be able to identify with. But if you prefer a healthy dose of PC with your reading, better pass on this one.The novel does not hesitate to point out, even in the first chapter, some basic problems facing gay male society, including those pushed on us by others as well as those for which we can only blame ourselves. But it "goes where no gay novel has gone before", by (cleverly, in stages) blurring the line between homosexuality and pedophilia, a distincting that gay activists have spent considerable efforts in reinforcing. The fact that the accusation of gay-men-as-child-mollestors comes from misguided right-wing forces can easily be dismissed, but even the gay characters have occasional lapses of faith in the distinction. All in all, a disturbing but absolutely riviting novel, which I recommend to those who can read it with an open mind.
