5.0 out of 5 stars Third time isn't the charm..., May 4, 2007
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
...Because the charm is already there in John Lowery's (stage name: John 5) first solo effort, Vertigo. The Devil Knows My Name might be his best solo album thus far, but this is subjective to the listener, of course. This is not to say the previous two were sub-par, though. All three are excellent, but to my ears the music gets better and better as each album passes.

No longer under Shrapnel Records, this album is the first under 60 Cycle Hum Records. Note that although there are eleven tracks, three of them are a minute and a half or less in length. We are still given fifty-five minutes of shredding and radiant music, however. Another thing worth noting is the cover of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." Since there are never vocals in John's solo albums, the vocals for this song are replicated with the guitar, and it's a pleasant treat.

John handles all guitars, but like with his last release, Songs for Sanity, there are guest appearances. "The Werewolf of Westeria" features Joe Satriani, "Black Widow of La Porte" features Jim Root, and "The Washing Away of Wrong" features Eric Johnson. John also handles the banjo and bass (but with contributions from Piggy D. and Matt Bissonette). He has truly made a name for himself leaving Manson, joining Rob Zombie, and releasing three solo albums. As each solo album passes, I give more and more appreciation for his talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!!!, August 20, 2007
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
If your familar with John 5 because of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, I don't think that's fair for him or you! Don't get me wrong now, he's amazing with the both of them. If u wanna know the real John 5 check out his solo
albums their pretty good, but this one is simply amazing. This has been one of my favorite albums since it's release. If you like shredding and just simply amazing soloing and great instumental song writing give this a listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Did he sell his soul to the guitar devil?, June 10, 2008
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
Great buy this album is absolutely amazing! John 5 utilizes a myriad of skills mixed with bluegrass and metal tones. The album starts out with a gut wrenching distortion intro and achieves that by using a violin bow like Jimmy Page and sounds very eerie. Throughout this album J5 also includes various well known guitarists such as, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and of course the guitarist from Slipknot Jim Root. They all throw in their own unique styles and work very well with J5's styles of play. This album is a great buy and is worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, 5?!?, June 10, 2010
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
Yes, you read that right. John 5 has finally proven what those of us who followed him from early in his career have known all along, that he belongs among the pantheon of contemporary guitar icons. Do NOT let the appearance fool you, John 5 is one seriously bad mother%$#@! when it comes to throwing down on the guitar. This man single-handedly made the Fender Telecaster a heavy metal weapon. From his work with Marilyn Manson to his current gig with Rob Zombie, John 5 has evolved and improved. Requiem, and [the new CD] The Art of Malice are jaw-dropping as well, but start here if you want to get to know the name John 5...the Devil already does.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Industrial/Alt-Country Metal From J5, January 24, 2010
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
John 5's initial offering, "Vertigo" blew me away when I first heard it. Full of original, explosive guitar pyrotechnics, an absurd sense of humor, and true originality, there was nothing else quite like it. One of Mike Varney's same-ol Shrapnel Yngwie shredders he is not. Unfortunately, his subsequent solo albums ("Requiem", "Songs For Sanity") have never reached that same pinnacle of over-the-top absolute chaos. That having been said, "The Devil Knows My Name" is a giant step back in that direction, with some fantastic guest appearances and moments for guitar fans (the crazy noise-solo trade off between John5 and Satriani is worth the price of admission alone), great production, and some very cool solos. I guess my complaint is that it seems hard for him to top himself after the audacity of "Vertigo".....definately worth checking out, and much more interesting that his last release. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Depth ~ Intensity & Eclecticism, July 20, 2007
By
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
What can you say about this guitar slinger except that he gets better and better with each thing he puts down. His playing is always lyrical, fast and melodic while remaining intense and at times sounding like all the wheels are gonna fall off the bus only to have him bring it all down tight, unique and clever. Great recording, enlisting other great players to add to the mix. Great buy; can't go wrong!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Amazing, May 2, 2007
This review is from: Devil Knows My Name (Audio CD)
I am completely in awe af how great this guy is. He may look like a freak, and he has been associated with that idiot Marilyn Manson, but this guy is the real deal. I was initially attracted to get this because of the fact that my hero, Joe Satriani, is featured on "The Werewolf of Westeria". Although Satch's contributions are limited and brief, I was truly amazed by the rest of this CD. Eric Johnson is featured later on in the album with a cool spacey phaser/delay-driven solo on "The Washing Away of Wrong". John's chops are blazing fast, but he doesn't solely rely on playing fast in order to create good instrumental guitar music. This album is a perfect combination of demonic and chilling themes, low crushing metal riffs, smokin' shred solos, upbeat bluegrass plucking, and nice melodic choruses. Why does this guy even waste his time with that loser Manson? If you're into the likes of Satch, Vai, Petrucci, and Eric Johnson like I am... buy this!
