Editorial Reviews

Review

"The horror...becomes a personal tragedy that the reader, too, experiences. Shiel does not wish to comfort the reader, just as young Henry is not comforted...Shiels compassionate writing creates a community of bright, supportive, and determined people, whose characters develop and deepen as the fire growsnever slows down, but leaves the reader with a great respect for the hardy, strong-willed people who fought and survived."
--Catherine Perkins, Historical Novel Society

"Will have readers frantically turning the pages! This dramatic retelling of the largest wildfire in Michigans history is well-written and riveting...Readers become connected to this place and its people...As the fire begins, the decisions made reflect a measure of hope, astonishment and desperation...Thanks to the writing ability of Walt Shiel, this catastrophic moment of history leaps off the written page and into the hearts of readers."
--Joyce Handzo, In The Library Reviews

"Vividly recreates the terrible blaze from start to finish, the toll it took, and the trials of human beings forced to recover from the devastating losses it inflicted. Though Devil in the North Woods tells the story of man vs. nature, its core is emotional and human-centered."
--Midwest Book Review

"Written with the pace of a thriller, Devil in the North Woods is a grim but fascinating read, building a bonfire of the dusty pages of history."
--Northern Express Weekly

"Read[s] more like a suspense novel...the book becomes impossible to put down once the fire hits town...The detail is so realistic and believable that it is easy to imagine yourself in this situation right alongside the characters in the book...This is more than the story of an out-of-control wildfire; it is the story of everyday heroes and the way they reclaim their lives after tragedy."
--Danielle Feliciano, Reader Views

Product Description

What would you do if a wildfire swept through your area without warning?

In October 1908, a wildfire swept through northeast Michigan and consumed 900 homes and two million acres of farms and forest. Despite the valiant efforts of the farmers, lumbermen, and shopkeepers, only Lake Huron could quench the flames. With no fire watch towers, spotting aircraft, telephones, or organized firefighting and only limited telegraph, warnings were too few and too late.

Devil in the North Woods accurately depicts the fire's genesis, growth, and aftermath. The story's real-life protagonist, 10-year-old Henry Hardies, survived the fire but family did not. Relying on Henry's personal recollections and author Walt Shiel's faithful recreation of time and place, the book vividly brings Henry's ordeal to life.

Devil in the North Woods contrasts the terror of nature's destruction with a chronicle of family, love, sorrow, and recovery. The story leaves the reader buoyed by faith in the resilience of the human spirit and belief in love's ability to germinate amid the ashes of ruin.

Includes a map and many historical photos not included in the print edition.

==========

"This is first rate writing that at times will leave you wondering whether it is fact or fiction but in a manner that does not deceive or talk down to the reader. Highly Recommended." -Charles M. Noble, Amazon Vine reviewer

"Walt Shiel takes his readers into a vivid turn-of-the century adventure through Devil in the North Woods. This is a historically accurate account of a 1908 fire that destroyed the town of Metz, Michigan. Tragically, many of the town's citizens perished whether they tried to fight the fire or escape. Through their trials, Shiel highlights how different life was in the early 1900s, with horse-drawn transportation and one-room schoolhouses the norm. His account of the fire provides a drama that is entertaining, but not for the squeamish. Therein lies the power of this book, Shiel's writing is so visceral it will cause the reader to blanch, but then turn the page for more." -Military Writers Society of America

"The terror of the fire and the way it impacts these families and threads, cause you to lose yourselves in the words on the pages, which flip all too fast...This is a story that you feel in your gut, and the lessons to be learned are on every page. " -Clifford Feightner, author of Views from Sandhausen

"This is more than the story of an out-of-control wildfire; it is the story of everyday heroes and the way they reclaim their lives after tragedy." -Danielle Feliciano, ReaderViews.com

"
I stayed up till 3AM three nights in a row, exhausted but unable to put this book down. And now that I've finished it, I'm sad that it's done, and I wish there was a movie based on this book, or this historical event" -Amazon customer review by M. Staller

"
Devil in the North Woods will forever live on in hearts and minds of all who read it." Amazon customer review by jimtown

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, What a Read!, August 14, 2005

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
As a rule I am not a fan of fiction, historical or otherwise. I suspect it may be a flaw in the genes or DNA or the like but there it is. However, every once in a while there is an exception and this book is a perfect example. I became interested due to its subject matter, Wildfires. I have been intrigued with Wildfires after once living on the western slope of Colorado and experiencing their often devastating effects first hand on numerous occasions. Thus, when this book was recommended to me it piqued my interest and it turned out to be well worth my time.
The author skillfully blends the true story of Michigan's largest wildfire in modern history, the Metz fire of October 15, 1908, and the actual experiences of survivor Henry Hardies with a host of other characters, some fictional and some composites of real participants to tell a story that is highly readable, believable, and guaranteed to hold your interest from first page to last. The effects of the fire which killed 43, destroyed in excess of 900 homes, left 4,600 homeless, and destroyed the town of Metz is recounted in vivid detail and contains elements of love, death, sorrow, family, friendship, and rebirth that will leave the reader both a bit sad and yet hopeful.
In a time when some 175,000 books are published each year and many good writers, such as Walt Shiel, go unnoticed due to financial limitations for promotional activities, books such as this deserve a wide spread audience. This is first rate writing that at times will leave you wondering whether it is fact or fiction but in a manner that does not deceive or talk down to the reader. Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you coming back, September 7, 2005
"Devil in the North Woods" by Walt Shiel is a real barn burner. I kept trying to put out the fire. Walt's style kept me immersed in the story and fully engaged until way too late each night. I enjoyed the read and the education.

More About the Author

Although born in Michigan, I was raised across the US and around the world as an Air Force 'brat.' I started school on the Pacific island of Guam during the Korean War and finished high school in France during the Vietnam War. Shortly after my graduation, Charles DeGaulle kicked all American forces out of the country, but I swear it had nothing to do with me.

Subsequently, I earned a BSEE degree from Michigan State University, a commission and pilot wings from the Air Force, and the hand of a charming young woman named Kerrie. During 20 years as an Air Force pilot (including time in the Michigan Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves), I logged 3400 flying hours, plus another 400 hours as a civilian pilot.

As a civilian engineer, I worked on the B-2 bomber program and the F-16, F-35, and F-22 fighter programs and recently retired from Lockheed Martin. I have completed master's degree coursework in astronomy and business administration, but am now the publisher and managing partner for Slipdown Mountain Publications LLC/Jacobsville Books.

Since 1992, I have written for magazines in the US, England, and Australia and authored three military aviation history books, three novels, and two collections of short stories.

Kerrie and I have two daughters and two grandchildren and live on a 40-acre Michigan farm populated with horses, cats, dogs, and an abundance of wildlife.
