At least it was only a quarter...,

This review is from: In Bed With The Devil (Silhouette Desire) (Millionaire of the Month) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jack is a millionaire who must spend a month in the estate of his dead best friend in order for a substantial inheritance to go to a charity. Also at the house is Meri, the now grown sister of his friend who is out to seduce him then send him packing since he rejected her all those years ago. Never mind that she practically has a fiance (or that he is conveniently turned into a cad), since she doesn't give it a second thought. Despite her friends pleas, she goes on with her plan, then it blows up in her face when they both develop feelings for each other.
Not knowing this was the last in a series, I felt a little lost when characters would suddenly be mentioned (and the epilogue is skip-worthy if you have not read the rest of the stories), then never developed. This might have been an interesting story if it had not been for the heroine. For a brilliant person, she certainly wasn't smart. And her lack of self esteem got tedious (as well as all her surgery to placate her demons). I never got the feeling that she was anything more than a petulent child, even after a dozen years. This story was just a huge dud; like her huge implants. Luckily I got this for a quarter at a library sale.

I usually like Mallery's books, but not this one. The main problem I had was with Meri. I got sick and tired of her. Why would anyone want to seduce someone and then turn around and go back to their boyfriend. Another problem I had was with all the surgery she had done. I didn't see her as a strong woman. I thought she had extreme issues when it came to her looks. She should have been happy with who she was. I got sick of reading about her. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Is this a Susan Mallery Book??,

I completely agree with Heather's review. At times I found myself asking if this was really a Susan Mallery book. I usually enjoy her stories so much but this didn't read like her style at all. I will say that the first chapter was great and left me with the impression that this would be an ugly duckling becomes beautiful swan-type story, which I adore. Instead, Meri was a completely unlikable character and was extremely conceited with her "new" looks. If I had been Jack I would have told Meri to "hit the road!". She was a complete turn-off. Save your money on this one.

This is the last book in the millionaire of the month series. Jack is the last one to stay at the house in Tahoe as a promise to his best friend who died. Prior to his stay at the house, his friends from college all stayed there and found the love of their lives. Jack was certain he wouldn't be in the same situation as his buddies because he never allowed anyone to get close enough to care. When he arrives at the house, he is surprised to see Meri there. Meri has been the housekeeper and Hunter's (his dead friend) sister. Meri has always been super intelligent, but she has lots of insecurities. She felt out of place, alone and rejected when 11 years ago she told Jack she loved him and he walked away. Meri felt Jack broke his promise to his brother about looking out for her. Instead, Jack was keeping tabs on her from a distance. Meri was seeking revenge, she wanted to seduce Jack and then walk away from him.
The heroine in this story was not perfect, she had issues with her body image, which she corrected with surgery. This is rather uncommon in romance books, but in this case it made the character feel better about herself so you tend to overlook this. Jack's character was intriguing because he really cared, only he was afraid to show it. He was also ridden in guilt. Meri finally gets what she was looking for, but leaving Jack was harder than she originally thought. She leaves him, afraid of being rejected and dumped. Of course, they find their happily ever after. It was a nice wrap to the series. The Epilogue was very touching. It was nice to recap how all of these friends' lives changed after staying at the house and catching up with them. Good series worth reading.

I love Susan Mallery's style of writing...not too angsty, not too one-sided from the female side, and with some great, sexy scenes. This book did not fail. thanks!

I find the reviews of those who only gave the story 1 or 2 stars to be quite negatively prejudicial and way off mark. Yes, the heroine did have breast augumentation to bring her up to a B size. The first review, however, refers to them as "huge implants". Huge? Since when is a "B" considered huge? Also, the reviewer says that Meri practically has a fiance... obviously missing the parts where not only does Meri tell her best friend Bettina that she has no intention of marrying the "other man" but that he has not even asked her... she just found a ring among his possessions.
Anyway, every so often you come across a book you think of as "special". For me, "In Bed with the Devil" was one of those books. I thought the character of Meri was really fresh. So often the gifted genius is a stereotype (remote, work-aholic, a loner) In this book, in addition to being a brilliant scientist, she is a caring friend, an ugly duckling turned swan, and a woman who decides to seduce the man she has loved for many years. I really enjoyed watching her tease Jack, watching him struggle as his good intenions are put to the test. It was also heartwarming to know from the very first chapter that they really did care about each other. Having read all the books in this series, I thought this one was the best... and a great way to wind up the Millionaire of the Month series.

Strong, Sweet and very entertaining book,

Jack Howington III is sexy as sin, handsome as the Devil, and determined not to let any woman get to him let alone the sister of his departed best friend. He has come to Lake Tahoe to stay for a month at Hunter's Landing. If he stays the entire time, the property along with the home will go to charity and help families.
Jack feels he let his friend down and was the cause of his death. He promised to watch over his sister Meredith upon his death but Jack watches from a far because there are too many memories, memories of a genius young teenager who loved and adored him. Therefore, when he arrives at the Tahoe home and finds Meri there he is speechless. Meri has an axe to grind, she wants to seduce Jack and then walk away because she felt abandoned when her brother Hunter passed away and was left with no mother, no friends, no family and most of all no Jack. As a teen, Meri was over weight, thought her nose too big, had the IQ of a genius and no one other than her brother so when she sees Hunter she becomes determined to make him pay and seduces him. At first, Jack is not game but she wears him down. She desires to rid herself of her feelings for Jack so she can move on to her boyfriend Andrew. Therefore, when Andrew appears on the doorstop, she is doubly confused and then becomes irate when Jack has Andrew investigated and exposes the snake for what he is.......a lying and conniving con man. However, what hurts Meri even more is to find out that Jack never took his promise to her brother Hunter seriously and instead of taking some time to see if she's was ok after Hunter died, he just had his team and some investigators watch her to make sure she was ok and that men were not using her for her wealth. She expected more of him and he let her down. Readers will grow to love Meri.....her strength and determination to make a new life, to loose those pounds, have a little surgery to give her some confidence, reach out and make friends and most of all take care of her "nerdy" team of scientists. You'll also learn to appreciate her "nerdy" team, how she takes care of them and how they respond when Jack spills the beans about Andrew. As for Jack, you'll want to reach out and love him and make him see the light. Your heart will break for Jack because he can't let anyone see the "truth about him, not the emptiness of his heart nor the darkness of his soul." In Bed with the Devil was the last story in Millionaire of the Month...."bound by the terms of a will, six wealthy bachelors discover the ultimate inheritance". Again, Susan Mallery delivers an extremely entertaining, sensitive and at times humorous read. Even though I have not read the entire series, I think In Bed with the Devil tied all of the seven "Samuari" brothers into one final and neat package. |
