5.0 out of 5 stars This CD saved rock music for me.
I had almost completely given up on popular music (and especially MTV) by early 1999. Then I saw Kid Rock performing in front of the MTV studios early one morning. I was amazed at his versatility. 3.0 out of 5 stars he's allright
I used to think Kid Rock was a chump, but I took a gamble and bought his CD, and was pleased. Kid Rock knows what is going on. I was proved wrong by him, and enjoy listening to his CD. I am not a rap fan at ALL, but enjoyed what he did with this CD, and for the people out there who call this trash, well lets just say, those with short attention spans, and a poor...

I had almost completely given up on popular music (and especially MTV) by early 1999. Then I saw Kid Rock performing in front of the MTV studios early one morning. I was amazed at his versatility. The music rocked (which is something I hadn't seen on MTV since "Headbangers Ball" was canceled,) and he could play every instrument: drums, guitar, turntables, keyboards. I was so impressed, I went out and bought "Devil Without a Cause" the next day. I wasn't disappointed.

Just about every single track on this CD is worth listening to. "Bawitdaba," "Cowboy," "Devil Without a Cause, "I Am The Bullgod," "Rovin' Gangster, "Somebody's Gotta Feel This," "F**k Off," and "Where U at, Rock" all hit hard. "Wasting Time" is my personal favorite, a laid-back Southern-Rock flavored groove. "Only God Knows Why" is a wonderful power-ballad, and "Black Chick, White Guy" actually shows surprising lyrical depth. The original version of "I Am The Bullgod" hidden at the end of "Black Chick, White Guy" is an enjoyable bonus. "Welcome 2 the Party" is passable, and "I Got One For Ya," is downright stupid, but I suppose no one can be perfect.

This CD is well worth your $15. It saved rock music for me, and it might work for you, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock on!, May 6, 2000
This review is from: Devil Without a Cause (Audio CD)
The last few years in music have just been an embarrassment of not only teen pop but also gangster white boy wannabes. Kid Rock isn't either. Pretty easy to put him in the later category, but after a listen to "Devil Without A Cause", that isn't happening.

The CD is a mix of the hard rock that used to be in fashion in the late eighties but without the make up and hard core rap without the dancers in gold lame (but Kid Rock does have dancers that are often strippers, which works better to me). The hard-edged character he portrays is rock with all his faults and his strengths. The man is a pimp. He doesn't put that hat on because some record exec told him to. He's the real deal.

The sound isn't straight-ahead rock, but includes some hip-hop seasoning every so often. The lyrics are right on. His stories are real and while sometimes making you think, they just groove you and make you want to jump up and rock. Songs like "Roving Gangster" and "Welcome To the Party" are great tunes to get any party started. The singles are the best rock tunes on the radio today. "The Bullgod" was a breath of fresh air to the wimpy alternative stuff that was taking over. "Bawitdaba" and "Cowboy" are some of the best hard rock tracks to have success on the radio recently.

The only track that is truly genuine and a snore is "Black Chick, White Guy", proving that a personal story in rock music doesn't always turn into a good track. Although the ballad "Only God knows why" is a great rock ballad, including a vocoder to disguise any real sadness and hiding it with anger, which is cool.

In all a great rock album, but sometimes too much of the rap interferes with the great rock beats, but hip hoppers might argue the opposite.

For me, I can't wait 'til his new album comes out and changes the radio once again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD, and let's get back to just reviewing the music, November 16, 1999

I was a little leery about liking much of this CD when I bought it, since it's not my typical musical taste. I'm happy I did though, it's great. My teen years were in the 80's metal days, and that's my background taste. This combines a great rock sound with some rap with it which is a great combo. Can people stop judging other fans and Kid himself now. I grew up with that horrible as they called it music and ended up just fine. I have a wife at home raising my 2 kids and live in a very upscale neighborhood, and have a very well paying job that I worked hard for. Kid Rock is a musician which is for entertainment purposes only. Did ya ever think it's all an act and he's a great dad when he gets home? Yeah, it's possible. Raise yor kids right, and some music should not influence them that much at all (it never did to me). I'm not sure about most of you, but I listen to music for a good beat and a catchy tune (yeah to put it corny), not for some social and moral messages. If you like the music, by all means review it for others to know what you think since you have similar taste. If you have no interest in this kind of music, just move on then.

"Kid Rock" may be feelin' his country roots recently, but this is his best rap/rock offering. Great lyrics too. You know you're getting into something sweet when the first track "Bawitdaba" kicks in. This whole disc is a great example of what can happen when mixing genres is done the right way. It's overall the best mix of rap/rock since "Fight For Your Right To Party". Other impressive tracks here are "Cowboy" and "Devil Without A Cause". Plus this has one of the best power-ballads since the hair-metal days, "Only God Knows Why". But what I like most about "Kid Rock", is that besides the skills, he's pretty down to earth, and he's not trying to be too deep, he just wants to have fun. This is a fun album.

So if you aren't close minded, do yourself a favor, and take a risk. Buy it, listen to it, and enjoy. It is a upbeat album that will put you in a good mood, it won't make you feel as though you want to slit your wrists or anything. I love all music, Sublime is among my favorite, Clapton, Zeppelin, Stones, STP, Van Halen so on and so on. Good job Kid, job well done

5.0 out of 5 stars Kid Rocks best album to date, August 14, 2006
This review is from: Devil Without a Cause (Audio CD)
when i first started listenin to Kid Rock, i was blown away. it was something totally new for me. well, heres my review

Bawitdaba-5/5 probably one of the greatist opening tracks of all time. has the famous line "MY NAME IS KIIIIIIIIIIIIIID...Kid Rock!"

Cowboy- 5/5 my 3rd favorite song. kid starts out with some slow rap then at the end it gets great.

Devil Without A Cause- 5/5 wow..this really shows Kid's ability to rap. with joe c finishing things off with a rap then starts yellin "WHO LIKES TO PARTY ROCK THE PARTY!?!!?" and stuff like that. R.I.P. Joe C

I Am The Bullgod- 4/5 a pretty good song but after awhile it gets old.

Roving Gangster(Rollin) - 4/5 like Bullgod, it can get repetitive, but still its good.

Wasting Time- 3/5 sounds like filler material to me. a decent song, but i usually just skip over it.

Welcome 2 The Party (Ode 2 The Old School)- 5/5 a pretty long song with some woman (trying to) rap in the middle, but still one of my favorite songs on this album. he raps for 2 min straight the first verse, then kicks things up a notch in the last.

I Got One For Ya- 3/5 More filler material. sounds like it shouldve been on cocky or his self titled cd. usually just skip over this song too.

Somebodys Gotta Feel This- 5/5 My favorite song. this song kicks so much arse its not even funny. its pumpin til the very last.

Fist of Rage- 5/5 a real heavy song with him screaming in the chorus. a long guitar solo in the middle.

Only God Knows Why- 5/5 the first Kid Rock song i ever heard. this is my 2nd fav. song on this album. this is actually a slow song used with a voice box( or something). I love this song. i cant skip it.

F-ck Off- 4/5 An angry song that features Eminem at the very end. An ok song, but i usually skip it. its kinda hard to hear kid's voice in this one.

Where U At Rock- 5/5 i really like this song. it ties with the title track for the best rhyming. wow

Black Chick, White Guy- 5/5 a slow song, but he still raps. 7 minutes long, he raps a story of two lovers and their problems. at the very end theres a remix of I Am The Bullgod, although its not as good as the original.

well there u go. this is Kid Rock at his best. If your a Kid Rock fan, GET THIS ALBUM NOW!!!

My first Kid Rock CD and I'm hooked. Can't seem to turn it off. Each time through it gets better. Sounds much better in the car, he's a little angry at the ladies but don't take him too seriously he's only trying to make a buck. I'm sure if he keeps up like this he will make quite a few.

Kid Rock is not some suddenly hit the big time after only recording for 5 months guy. Most people had never heard of him before Cowboy and Bawitdaba and Only God Knows Why started playing on the radio nonstop. Kid Rock spent 10 YEARS trying to be heard and now he's finally got what he deserves. He had 3 cd's out before he hit the "big time." All of you people that want to judge him because you dont like his music, grow up. Kid Rock and his music deserves respect. He's worked hard for where he is today.. would you want someone slamming and badmouthing YOUR accomplishments? I dont think so :)

I think Kid Rock is the best they have out there. He knows how to have a good time and how to keep the family values in tact. He loves his son and I love his music. I think that is is totally sweet that he wrote "Only God Knows Why" for his son. I actually read a review that he walked into the room and his son was listening to this song and crying. I think he is great to his son and his loving and loyal fans.
