This review is from: The Devil You Know (Paperback)
This book came out in 1992, 17 yrs ago, By Mills and Boon(book number 3670)I read it, but of course the review isn't on this site, I was happy to read it again so that I could put in a review.
I like the older books most, because they have less graphic sex in them, but I have to slam against the wall of sometimes brutal treatment by the alpha male.
This book isn't like that, Steed Charlton fell in love with Carina when she was at the tender age of 16, but he was too proud to tell her. The love he had for her knew no bounds, and time didn't diminish it.
So 5yrs later when Carina's father died, she was left a mountain of debts, it seems her stepmother Isobel had bleed him dry, and forced him to mortgage their home twice to keep Isobel happy.
When the will was read, Isobel found the house and every last penny was to go to Carina, Isobel let everyone know she was going to contest the will, only to find out there wasn't even a red cent left of the money he artist father had earned before Isobel came into their lives.
Steed made sure Isobel know she wasn't welcomed to stay with Nina(Carina) and made sure she left never to darken Nina's door again.
Then he came up with a plan, he asked Nina to stay in her home, he would pay all debts and put her home in her name, if she would take his orphaned twin nephews, and become his wife.
Nina agreed, only to find she was now in love with Steed, and she was to shy to tell him.
So Steed took her to Spain, so she could chill out, but she meet James Charlton, a very handsome playboy who was used to easy conquests, only Nina wasn't interested in him, and this ticked him off.
James attacked Nina and Steed just happened to come to the rescue, just in time.
Then once Steed gets his nephews and puts them under Nina's came, they form a bond, that he is a little jealous of, but again he is too proud to tell Nina of how much he loves her.
It isn't until Nina goes to rescue a small village girl caught in the incoming tide that Steed learns he should have told Nina his feelings and maybe she would learn to love him too.
Both the little girl and Nina survive the icy waters of the Atlantic, and the love Steed and Nina have for each other comes to the predictable and wonderful conclusion.
From the back of the book: '"I want to brand you as mine, do you know that?" Steed muttered huskily. "To clothe you from head t foot in veils so no other man can look at you, to keep you wholly to myself."
Steed Charlton was a man possessed, and Nina was his latest possession! she owned him everything, and there was no doubt in her mind that Steed would see to it that she paid him back, measure for measure to the ultimate degree.'
