Let me start by saying that this Canadian goth/rock band is one of the most original bands I've heard in years. Their new CD Devilries is breaking new ground with a lot of mixed dark influences. Every song has its own sound & style just showing how Howling Syn can handle many music styles on a single album.Carnivorous Lunar Activities is one of the most powerful Howling Syn songs up to date and a very good choice for opening this great CD. Filled up with rage and violence, this song will blow your head off. You can feel the Moonspell/Therion influences there. Éric is really showing that he makes one with his drum kit. Great lyrics, great melodies, GREAT SONG! I am the Night makes me wanna throw my fist up to the air! This one has more heavy rock riffs than previous HS songs and it's great! The voice of Patryk is very different than the regular goth vocals and it shows how this guy can change his voice the way he wants. This track also features Sophie on the flute for a Jethro-like flute part. Walk the Walk is one of my fav on the CD. The lyrics are more personal and I must say that they touched me a lot and it makes me open my eyes on how we are as a society. Again, Howling Syn are showing that they enjoy exploring new stuff, not that this song is very complex but it's more catchy and clear than few other songs. The vocals and the loud guitars in the chorus are great!!! Eden-Sweet Devilry is the first song where Sophie did all the vocal tracks. She is a very talented singer. Her operatic angelic voice and her witchy personality always take me away while I'm listening. The music of this song is very surprising and theatrical. This is the most progressive track of the CD and again HS are playing with music on this number. Makes me think of the old Genesis/Rush or Nightwish meets Dream Theatre. The lyrics of this song are very nice too. This song is a must! Bleed in Silence goes deep inside the humain pain and tolerance and is a fast/heavy song with some 80's dark pop influences. This song has it's own personality and I think it's great like that. The guitar solo is very melodic and catchy, Gilbert is really doing great for his debut with the band. Shameless, I Breathe is the sadest song on the CD but at the same times it takes you away with all the great melodies and Sabbath-like riffs. It's like a sad heavy waltz and it's very unique I must say. The voices of Patryk and Sophie are very well done on this one and again Sophie is playing a great flute melody at the end of this song. Our Sweet Oblivion was the most shocking moment when I first listened to Devilries. This audacious pop/metal track is showing again the diversity of Howling Syn. My first impression wasn't that good about this song but after a few listens I changed my mind. The angelic voice of Sophie is awesome, the pounding bass is grooving like hell and the bridge of the song is nice with Patryk and Sophie singing together! So this song is something but you may need a few spins to like. But if you are not a metal fan and you love Pop/Rock you will be pleased with this number. The Man Without Soul talks about all kinds of bad addictions of the human being. This track is very special in many ways. Howling Syn use a lot of different moods throughout the song, Patryk and Sophie are splitting the vocals in a cool way and the musical performance of this progressive metal song is done perfectly! One of the most heavy tracks on the CD!! This Gothic/Trash anthem is good for headbanging and it reminds me of their first album Forebearers of Dusk! A must!!! Ghost From The Past is the only track with some medieval influences. A very dark love song with some black metal feels in some parts, mixed with more happy kick-ass riffs. The piano track on this song is really great, so are the orchestrations, flute and drum rolls. This is again a great song to headbang on! Samhain (the night he came home) is inspired by the horror classic Halloween. This song reflects the famous movie series in lyrics and for the music we can feel some Tea Party/Maiden influences with some tribal parts. Again, the vocals are cool but for this song what impressed me the most was Éric's drum track and the two guitar solos! Hail to Mr Myers! Farewell to Eternal Life is the first music that is not written by Patryk. This time, Gilbert shows us what he's up to! This song is heavy, nothing less nothing more! Kick-ass riffs with evilish vocals and a great guitar solo! Howling Syn are up to something and I'm sure it's something great! Watch for those Evil Synners, cause I saw them with Lacuna Coil last year and they are here to stay!!

I don't believe it... without having seen the previous review, I said almost exactly the same things about the same songs on the CD, in particular, noting the fact that Carnivorous Lunar Activities was a good choice for their opening number, as well as Patryk's voice on I Am The Night (my fav along with Shameless, I Breathe) the guitar solos on Bleed In Silence, and Sophie's vocals on Eden Sweet Devilry. That really says something about the album!Highly recommended. Visit their official website at: http://www.howlingsyn.net
