An absolutely original sports novel,
By
This review is from: On the Devil's Court (Pendragon Cycle) (Paperback)
"On the Devil's Court" is a wonderfully fast, easy, and exciting read. Joe Faust's life has gone into the dumps, and the only thing that matters anymore is basketball. Unfortunately, his basketball game is rotten these days too. So, Joe sells his soul to the devil for a perfect season of basketball. Or does he? Readers are propelled through the book by one realistic conflict after another, with plenty of surprises to keep the reader guessing about the state of Joe's soul. I've taught this book to high school freshmen for a number of years now, and the boys always love it. This is a great book for younger readers, or slower readers, because it is written in clean, simple sentences that few readers will have trouble with. All in all, a first-rate first novel!

On the Devil's court is a GREAT book!!! Joe Faust, a senior in high school, sees his basketball skills deteriorating, and desperately wants to improve so he can make the varsity team. One night, while in an old deserted gym, Joe makes a terrifying bargain, agreeing to sell his soul to the Devil in exchange for one straight season of power. When the end of the year rolls around, Joe's team is undefeated, and they make the championships. Joe's deal with the Devil is done.On the Devil's Court takes place in Seattle where Mr. Deuker lives, and the story is very true to real life. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any one who likes basketball and suspense, and would like to add, if anyone is interested, that Mr. Deuker is a very nice and funny person, and is my WONDERFUL teacher!!!

A MUST READ BOOK- On the Devil's Court,
By Greeky (Massachusetts, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: On the Devil's Court (Hardcover)
On the Devil's Court is an intresting book written by Carl Deuker. It deals with a boy named Joe, who isn't really fantastic in any area of life. His main concern is to play varsity basketball, but he hasn't been playing so great. Then, a miracle happened. He is a star on his varsity team, one of the most popular kids in school, and a straight A student. Are these accomplishments of his hard work or is someone or something helping him!

Joe is new in town. His father is a very important scientist who used to work at Harvard. The summer before Joe's senior year in high school, his father has accepted a job in Washington State. Joe is hoping that with the move he will have his first chance to attend public school instead of another snobby private one. He is especially looking forward to school after he starts playing basketball every day with a group of guys from his neighborhood. The biggest passion in Joe's life is basketball and he wants to be on a team that will be good.
Then Joe goes to a party thrown by one of the basketball players, drinks, and loses his parents' trust. He ends up being enrolled in private school. Much to his surprise, the basketball team is good, so good that he might not make it. Joe seems to have lost his touch for basketball. One evening in frustration Joe, not sure if he is being serious or not, makes a deal with the devil to give up his soul for a perfect basketball season. All of a sudden things are going perfectly right for Joe. He makes the varsity basketball team after all, and some nights he feels like he couldn't miss a basket even if he tried. He begins to get very uneasy. Did he really make a bargain with the devil? I liked the concept of this story, and I liked the way Joe and his parents related to each other. I didn't like the ending, though. I was expecting a great resolution, perhaps an interesting twist, but was left feeling disappointed.

Great Sports Story!,

Joe Faust is a high school student. Joe and his family move to Seattle. Joe's absolute passion is basketball. It's basketball anywhere and everyday practically. Joe has to start at a new school in the fall and the most important thing to him right now is basketball. Joe's parents want him to go to a high quality school that has very good teaching, but all Joe wants to do is play basketball and one of the best high school teams is at the school a couple of blocks down. The school Joe wants to go to his parents don't approve of. It's not the best school for Joe. He ends up going to the high school that his parents thought was best for him. It turns out that they have a pretty good basketball team. Joe starts making some new friends and now he is the most popular kid at school. One day Joe finds this abandoned gym not too far away from where he lives. Joe climbs through the window and starts to shoot some baskets. He makes his first three shots in a row. Joe is thinking how in the world this is happening. He keeps shooting and makes every single basket. Later on Joe believes that he has now sold his soul to the devil. In school, Joe's class is reading a novel about Dr. Faustus. In the novel, Dr.Faustus is a scientist, like Joe's dad and Dr.Faustus' name has a resemblance to Joe's last name and they both think they sold their souls. Will Joe be the next big basketball star? Did he really sell his soul to the devil or is he just dreaming?
I enjoyed this book a lot. Carl Deuker is one of my new favorite authors. All his books take place in Seattle and they are all about sports. Once in a while I like to read all about sports because I think sometimes those stories are the best. This book was very entertaining and the characters were great. I could picture everything in my mind perfectly. The description and the book itself were really great too. I recommend this book to anybody who loves fiction novels and sports.

On the Devil's Court,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: On the Devil's Court (Pendragon Cycle) (Paperback)
The book, "On the Devil's Court" is about a young man with a tough life at home and at school. This young man walks home from school everyday. As he is walking home one day he sees a basketball gym and decides to go and see what it's like. "He had no idea what he was getting himself into." Obviously the title of the book tells you that a deal was made and debts were owed. He plays at school and can't make anything and doesn't play well, he can't stand up to his father and has no guts. One time in this gym he decides to make a deal with the Devil that for one season in basketball he can be the best. He swishes his next shot. As his life goes on he changes and develops what he needs to compete in life. The pluses in this book are that it can hook you in and make it so that you don't move it away from your face. Also, it helps me develop what I can do in my life. Minuses were that it wasn't real and I can't ask for a perfect season. This book will help anyone gain the attitude that is needed to get to the top of whatever you do and learn to stay there with a great amount of confidence.

My favorite book when I was young,
By Clinton Wayne Sikes (Alabama) - See all my reviews

This is the book that sparked my interest in reading! When I was a junior in high-school a friend of mine read this book and recomended that I read it. Well I wasnt much of a reader but after this book that changed. I could really relate with the character of Joe because when I was in school I dearly wanted to be great at basketball. Carl Deuker did an excellent job with this book and any young person who is even remotely interested in sports should read it. Im 27 years old now and married and I recently bought a copy for myself because I love it so well. It will keep you turning the pages to the very end, even an adult will love this book!

MY MOST FAVORITE BOOK WAS On The Dervils Court. It was about a boy trying to fit in and make the asketball team.Well one day on his way home he found this old broken down court in a building. One day while he was playing a deep black mist vcome into the room and he starts making all his three point shots. And jokenly he says give me a fuul season of power and my soul is yours. The thing i loved the most about this book was the way the author desribed everything I felt as if I was watching a movie. In other words this book was very informative . Although it was long it kept you wondering what is going to happen next.If you like basketball read this book.
