3.0 out of 5 stars Hell hath no fury like . . . January 18, 2011
Format:DVD
You know the story. School misfit hates almost everyone at school, almost everyone at school hates said misfit. Then that lovable misfit finds the golden road to PAYBACK and high jinks ensue. This pretty much is the lay of the land to Devil's Diary. That, and the obvious cautionary caveat that everything comes with a price. Granted, the high school revenge motif is a time-honored plot that goes back to 70s era Carrie and even before. Although well-worn and hackneyed, I personally never get sick of seeing those archetypes of the kinds of people I couldn't stand when I was in high school get their comeuppance. It never gets old. As for cross-comparisons, Devil's Diary is basically a combination of Carrie and the Wishmaster films, minus the wishmaster character. An interesting twist this movie has is the subtle changes of power that take place as the diary changes hands. Where the movie starts to unravel, though was in the last 20 minutes. Like in a machine, where you will know exactly how every part will perform and when, the ending of Devil's Diary played out like that. It was very unsurprising, and by default, not particularly enjoyable. Still, the first 50 minutes make for some nearly satisfying viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alexz movies... October 4, 2010
By Mali
Format:DVD
I feel the need to see all Alexz Johnson movies - she's one of my favorite actresses.
This one was a bit off in places - I found it amusing that the "popular" crowd was stereotypically cheerleaders and jocks again, but even funnier were the awkward nun-like cheerleader uniforms.
Alexz's character was by far the most likable because she is who she is and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Her best friend is different and takes criticism from other students that have clear faults themselves, very hard. Not that anyone would blame her. She finds a diary in the cemeary and starts writing...soon after, the things she writes that she wished would happen DO happen. And it IS funny. Then the "popular girls" eavesdrop and find out what she's doing as Dominique (Alexz) gets worried about the journal making her friend dark and evil little by little. The journal gets stolen and carnage ensues as it travels to more ambitious aka more evil hands.
The ending "six weeks later" is a little strange and doesn't explain alot - there were others that saw what happened and knew about the book, but it seems Dom is on her own.
I wouldn't mind a sequel starring Alexz again, but it's probably not likely...
Some of the things that happen are a little - disturbing and extreme for a "Lifetime" movie, and pranks escalate to gruesome death pretty fast. Not recommended for kids.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay, not what I expected January 8, 2013
By Duckie

I purchased this movie after seeing the main character, Alex Johnson, in another horror film,Stranger With My Face because I thought she did particularly well in that movie. Unfortunately, this movie was disappointing compared to that other one and you could tell they had no budget. There were a lot of bad actors and scenes that could have been cut that made the movie slow. I think the storyline was good, but it just wasn't executed to it's full potential.

So the jist of this movie is two girls find the Devil's Diary in a gravyard one night. Whoever writes in this journal becomes obsessed with hatred and only writes hateful things in it. The twist is everything written in the book comes true and the book makes the writer think and write worse thoughts each time, to the point that they start seriously injuring and killing people. Eventually, the book finds it's way to a more 'powerful and hateful' person, whom can do even more damage. So the storyline is interesting and you'd think it would be full of drama and slightly thrilling, but there were several slow and dull parts. Don't get me wrong, it'd be a nice 'watch it on tv on a rainy afternoon' type of movie, but not something I want to own(wish I had just rented it instead).

So Overall, I'd say just rent this one on amazon instant video if you are curious about it rather than buying it.
