A fantastic debut!,

This review is from: The Devil's Garden (Paperback)
I find it suitable that the poem appearing on this page is "Betwixt and Between". For the speaker of this book is indeed betwixt and between the past, present, and static notions of self-hood. Adrian Matejka's beautiful debut, "The Devil's Garden" is a sonorous collection, filled with staccato phrasings and overlapping jazz rhythms. One of my favorite poems is "Understanding Al Green". I'm sure the Reverend would be pleased, for here is a speaker who is also undergoing his own quest for a type of divinity when he says, "With those words, I was off--borrowed Al/Green in the clutch in search of that thing." Readers, do not search far. Here is a collection that teems with life and breath.
