Move over Jones, Quartermain and Benjamin Gates. There's a new guy in town., March 21, 2009
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Growing up I loved the Tarzan movies the local station aired on Saturday mornings. Dark jungles, lost treasure and danger at every turn. Adventure books were one of my favorites as a child and now it doesn't seem there are many of them, especially in the Christian Fiction genre. Maybe they don't sell well but as for me they are a great base for an exciting story. Sure there are adventures in fantasy novels but it's not the same as those based in this world.
Now comes a new man on the scene, Henry Wolfe. He's normal and no superman by any stretch, easy to relate to and tough when he needs to be. "Out of the Devil's Mouth" is an adventure to the dark forbidding jungles of the Amazon rain forest to look for a missing explorer who went to look for the Fountain of Youth that was rumored to be located by a lost city. As you can expect, nothing goes well and danger lurks at every bend in the river. I can honestly say I REALLY enjoyed this book. Not only was it fun to read I had a real hard time putting it down. The writing style was easy on the brain and wasn't bogged down with all those annoying descriptions. It ended with a positive message although I would have liked to have seen a plug or hint that there was a new adventure on its way. This book is listed as book 2 but it is really the first book. Travis wants to go back and write book one but I say move forward to and write book three. Do they find the Fountain of Youth? Read it to find out.
The question of faith was explored but for those of you who hate preaching you should be okay with it. The message flows into the story and doesn't come off as contrived. As most Christian fiction should be it honors God and should not be offensive to most believers. There is death and evil but not extremely graphic. I'd let a youth read it.
This was my first Travis Thrasher book and it won't be my last. The guys got talent and can weave a great story.

Thrasher's Take on Indiana Jones, August 1, 2010
The Amazon. Even today the term brings to us an aura of mystery, adventure, and danger. Back in 1928 - the year Henry Wolfe would pack his bags and lead a team in search of the missing Louis Prescott - that statement was even truer. As a journalist, Wolfe had proven himself a hardy adventurer in a previous quest, which was why the Prescott family had sought him out and why his boss had given the ok.
And so Henry Wolfe, his mentor Max Joubert, the lovely Kate Prescott, and their team of adventurers set off into the Amazonian wilderness. Their goal was to find Kate's brother Louis and perhaps complete his mission and discover the secret city within. But adventuring isn't easy. Henry will be lucky if he can just get Out of The Devil's Mouth.
With his ninth novel, Travis Thrasher pays homage to Indiana Jones with this adventure novel set in the 1920s. The writing is solid, as always, and the use of the first person narrative really worked well with this story. The plot is a bit formulaic, following a pattern of getting one step closer to The Devil's Mouth at the expense of a few crew members. That pattern doesn't prevent it from being quite the adventure as
Henry finds himself embroiled in a journey where escape seems impossible.
For reasons Thrasher mentions in his author's note, Out of the Devil's Mouth changed a lot from its initial conception due to what his publisher wanted. As such, it was those constraints that probably gave this book a slightly different feel than what I was expecting. But for those who love adventure, this is one they aren't going to want to miss.

A timeless adventure, October 3, 2009
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Henry Wolfe is a journalist and a wanted man. Set in 1929, this adventure begins when Wolfe jumps into a river to escape Chicago mobsters. But almost before he has time to dry off, he is tackling another writing assignment along the Amazon River.
Wolfe braves strangling vines, flaming arrows, and thundering waterfalls while searching for Louis Prescott, the son of a wealthy New York family, who recently went missing while searching for the city of eternal life. Wolfe is sustained along the journey by the promise of a good story, the wit of his French mentor Max, and the hope of winning Kate Prescott's heart. Henry maintains his wry sense of humor while finding a mystical city that should remain lost and discovering the feisty and faithful Kate, without whom he is a lost man.
Travis Thrasher keeps the adventure captivating even while sorting through the timeless questions of faith, hope, and love.
