Move over Jones, Quartermain and Benjamin Gates. There's a new guy in town.,

This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Growing up I loved the Tarzan movies the local station aired on Saturday mornings. Dark jungles, lost treasure and danger at every turn. Adventure books were one of my favorites as a child and now it doesn't seem there are many of them, especially in the Christian Fiction genre. Maybe they don't sell well but as for me they are a great base for an exciting story. Sure there are adventures in fantasy novels but it's not the same as those based in this world.
Now comes a new man on the scene, Henry Wolfe. He's normal and no superman by any stretch, easy to relate to and tough when he needs to be. "Out of the Devil's Mouth" is an adventure to the dark forbidding jungles of the Amazon rain forest to look for a missing explorer who went to look for the Fountain of Youth that was rumored to be located by a lost city. As you can expect, nothing goes well and danger lurks at every bend in the river. I can honestly say I REALLY enjoyed this book. Not only was it fun to read I had a real hard time putting it down. The writing style was easy on the brain and wasn't bogged down with all those annoying descriptions. It ended with a positive message although I would have liked to have seen a plug or hint that there was a new adventure on its way. This book is listed as book 2 but it is really the first book. Travis wants to go back and write book one but I say move forward to and write book three. Do they find the Fountain of Youth? Read it to find out. The question of faith was explored but for those of you who hate preaching you should be okay with it. The message flows into the story and doesn't come off as contrived. As most Christian fiction should be it honors God and should not be offensive to most believers. There is death and evil but not extremely graphic. I'd let a youth read it. This was my first Travis Thrasher book and it won't be my last. The guys got talent and can weave a great story. 1 Star = Pathetic 2 Stars = Fair 3 Stars = Good 4 Stars = Excellent 5 Stars = Life changing

Thrasher's Take on Indiana Jones,

This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Kindle Edition)
The Amazon. Even today the term brings to us an aura of mystery, adventure, and danger. Back in 1928 - the year Henry Wolfe would pack his bags and lead a team in search of the missing Louis Prescott - that statement was even truer. As a journalist, Wolfe had proven himself a hardy adventurer in a previous quest, which was why the Prescott family had sought him out and why his boss had given the ok.
And so Henry Wolfe, his mentor Max Joubert, the lovely Kate Prescott, and their team of adventurers set off into the Amazonian wilderness. Their goal was to find Kate's brother Louis and perhaps complete his mission and discover the secret city within. But adventuring isn't easy. Henry will be lucky if he can just get Out of The Devil's Mouth. With his ninth novel, Travis Thrasher pays homage to Indiana Jones with this adventure novel set in the 1920s. The writing is solid, as always, and the use of the first person narrative really worked well with this story. The plot is a bit formulaic, following a pattern of getting one step closer to The Devil's Mouth at the expense of a few crew members. That pattern doesn't prevent it from being quite the adventure as Henry finds himself embroiled in a journey where escape seems impossible. For reasons Thrasher mentions in his author's note, Out of the Devil's Mouth changed a lot from its initial conception due to what his publisher wanted. As such, it was those constraints that probably gave this book a slightly different feel than what I was expecting. But for those who love adventure, this is one they aren't going to want to miss.

A timeless adventure,
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Henry Wolfe is a journalist and a wanted man. Set in 1929, this adventure begins when Wolfe jumps into a river to escape Chicago mobsters. But almost before he has time to dry off, he is tackling another writing assignment along the Amazon River.
Wolfe braves strangling vines, flaming arrows, and thundering waterfalls while searching for Louis Prescott, the son of a wealthy New York family, who recently went missing while searching for the city of eternal life. Wolfe is sustained along the journey by the promise of a good story, the wit of his French mentor Max, and the hope of winning Kate Prescott's heart. Henry maintains his wry sense of humor while finding a mystical city that should remain lost and discovering the feisty and faithful Kate, without whom he is a lost man. Travis Thrasher keeps the adventure captivating even while sorting through the timeless questions of faith, hope, and love.

Great Book!,
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
I loved this book. It starts with Henry being chased by the mob because of an article he wrote on Bugs Moran. The place is Chicago 1928. The action does not stop from there. Henry escapes to be offered an adventure to accompany Kate Prescott to the jungle to find her missing brother who went to the Brazilian Jungle and never returned. He did send letters home in which he mentioned looking for a Lost City. So of course Henry Wolfe the adventurer extradnoaire is intrigued. Along for the journey is a variety of characters including one of Henry's old friends Max. One of my issues with the book is it refers to a previous adventure which implies there is a book one which there is not. Through twists and turns this book holds onto you. I cannot wait to read another Henry Wolfe adventure so Travis Thrasher please hurry up and write. ;)

Thrasher's Latest Literary Triumph!,
By Music Fan-atic "Glen" (Hogwarts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
"Out of The Devil's Mouth" is Travis Thrasher's latest literary triumph! Thrasher himself tells of his resistance to be put into a box as an author and his newest tome definitely prevents that from happening. Within the circle of Christian writers, Travis certainly tests the boundaries. Out Of The Devil's Mouth is a fantastic tale of action and adventure in the tradition of Indiana Jones. Thrasher's hero, Henry Wolfe is every bit as likeable and humorous. The story takes place in 1929, starting with the infamous writer cum adventurer being dragged off by Italian mobsters in Chicago to meet his death for a story he wrote of their crime boss, but should that keep a good hero down? No, he successfully escapes to find he is wanted for hire for a dangerous excursion to the Amazon by the wealthy Prescott family of New York to find their missing son,Louis, who went to find a lost city that natives believe to hold secrets to eternal life. On a side trip, he is to travel to Key West to find his mentor and friend, French explorer, Max Joubert ( I couldn't help picturing a young Sean Connery in the movie role, haha, this would make a great flick!) Embarking on their journey is also Kate Prescott, Louis' feisty sister, some area natives, a doctor and sure fire Italian protector. What ensues is mystery, mayhem, terror and grand adventure, death for some and near-death for major players....will Max, Henry and Kate find Louis and escape impending death?? Can Kate's faith overcome Henry's disbelief?? Answering those questions would give far too much fun away! For all those who feel that Christian novels might be too preachy and a forum to push religion, I beg you to try Thrasher's novels,he is a strong talent producing unforgettable characters....I could NOT put this one down, it is his strongest effort to date and I eagerly await his thriller "Isolation" coming out later this year! Travis Thrasher is an unbelieveably wonderful, yet somewhat overlooked, gem of a writer, I have gone out and bought his whole collection and let me tell you, it was worth every penny! He should be noticed up in the ranks of Clive Cussler, Stephen King, and James Patterson: Travis Trasher Rocks!!! If you read only one author this year, make it Thrasher! I am hoping that Out Of The Devil's Mouth is only the beginning of a series of stories about Henry Wolfe! I LOVE this character and hated to see this story end! PLEASE do yourself a favor and read this great book! you willl NOT be sorry!!!! A++++++++++++++++

Suspense and Intrigue,
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Henry Wolfe is always itching for the next adventure. Living in 1929 as a writer, adventure seeks him as much as he seeks it. He is offered the chance to explore the Amazon as part of an expedition to find a lost city. Whispers of the city have circled for years, but no one has ever returned from it alive.
Setting off with his mentor, Max, a team of men, and the spirited and beautiful, Kate, Henry enters the jungle. Adventure and intrigue meets them immediatelely. Soon, finding the lost city is second priority. The first priority is to return from the expedition alive. Full of suspense and intrigue, this novel gripped me. I couldn't put it down. I kep telling myself, "Just one more chapter!" The writing is fresh and concise, and the faith issue is woven into the story in a way that seems completely natural. The characters are engaging, well-rounded, and dynmaic. This is a novel that entertains while provoking thought at the same time.

This is my first book by Travis Thrasher but it will not be my last. This is a fun page turner with lots of action! If you like Indy Jones, you will love this book. Great writing by an author that I will read often in the future. I cannot wait to read another Travis Thrasher novel.

Romancing the Stone meets Indiana Jones,

This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Fellow adventure seekers, you should pick up this novel. It's an adventure story-cum-romance set in Chicago and the Amazon River in the late 1920s, and it's pretty good.
I couldn't get into the novel "Isolation" at all (mainly because I don't see the point in there being a Christian version of The Shining), but I did like "Admission" and Thrasher is a good writer. This is the second Henry Wolfe adventure, and here he's escaping gangsters in Chicago only to find himself adrift (literally, at times) on the Amazon with a beautiful woman, Kate, who is searching for her missionary brother, Louis, who is missing. Along the way, the band of adventurers including a doctor (who fatally meets a jaguar), a Brazilian Indian, and Max, Henry's enigmatic friend from Key West confront piranhas, angry Indian tribes who jealousy guard a secret city, and lost-and-presumed-dead missionaries. There are also the requisite cliffs, waterfalls, and attacking vines (that apparently escaped from Scott Smith's The Ruins) and foreboding jungles.

You won't be able to put this one down!,
This review is from: Out of the Devil's Mouth (Henry Wolfe Adventure Series #2) (Paperback)
Travis Thrasher has proven he was successfully write books in a variety of genres. This book is entirely different than anything else he has published. It is along the lines of Indiana Jones as Henry Wolfe, the main character, heads on an expedition to Brazil. He comes upon a variety of predicaments he needs to somehow get himself out of. There is humor mixed in, which was tastefully done and enjoyable. Questions of faith and God are brought up as characters wrestle and struggle with real life questions. Thrasher's books all have substance and this one is no exception. It made me think about faith issues and help reaffirm what I do believe in and why. This is high action keeping your attention - keeping you curious about what will come next! I would love to see more Henry Wolfe adventures in the future!
