THE POSSESSIVE HUSBAND,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
DEVIL'S POND poses an interesting paradox: Lovely Julianne comes from money, is used to the finest, and she has just married a young man named Mitch. When they arrive at their secluded honeymoon getaway, she shouts she is free from the bonds of her mother's world, the society she claims to want freedom from. Mitch decides to give her that freedom to the extreme. He imprisons her on this little island in the middle of nowhere and refuses to let her leave. He will go to any lengths to keep her there, so she can give him children and live in a hunky dory kind of world. I Don't think that's what sweet Julianne has in mind.
DEVIL'S POND is a contrived piece of fluff, but due to the capable performances of Kip Pardue and Tara Reid, the film manages to involve us and cheer Julianne on in her freedom attempts. Why she married this clod in the first place remains a mystery, but dramatic license justifies the implausibility that some kind of signs weren't evident during their courtship. Meredith Baxter makes a very brief appearance as Reid's mother---she's still a lovely woman, too bad they didn't use her more.

Very Gripping!!,

This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
Devil's Pond was a very gripping movie. The story is about a young couple who spend their honeymoon on a small deserted "island". Little does the bride, Julianne (brilliantly portrayed by Tara Reid) realize at the beginning, that her new husband, Mitch (played very well by Kip Pardue)has no plans of ever letting her off the island. As she prepares to return to "civilization" to begin their lives together, he tells her that they'll "return" when HE says they will, and he starts to show an aggressive side. Slowly, she realizes that if she wants to make it off the "island" (which is some wooded land in the middle of a lake, or "pond". that her husband used to go hunting with his father on.), she'll have to find away to do so on her own. Afraid of water and unable to swim, she tries a few times to "escape", but to no avail, as Mitch finds ways to stop her. At one point, he even chains her down, and becomes physically violent, but she also fights back to the best of her ability. I won't spoil the ending, but like the rest of the movie, it moves along at a great pace. As mentioned, both Kip and especially Tara, give excellent performances, and she wasn't afraid to get down and dirty. Tara deserves high praise for being more than just "eye-candy", which she is unfairly often criticized for. Kip's performance has the severely obsessed, and somewhat deranged husband was also excellent. If this movie would have starred more media friendly, or "Hollywood Favourites" actors, it more than likely would have gone to the big screen, but they wouldn't have been able to do as good a job as Kip and Tara did. A very entertaining movie, with a very good performance by Kip Pardue, and an Excellent performance by Tara Reid.

An Enlightening Tale of Female Empowerment,

This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
Ladies,we've all dated him:the possessive psychopath in the making. We recognized the clues, kicked him to the curb, and found a nice secure man with perfect teeth and a knack for back massages. Unfortunately, things didn't work out quite as well for Julianna. Her husband gave NO clues that he was a raging lunatic until after they'd wed.(No, really...none.) Luckily, her former high-class worry-free lifestyle didn't deprive her of key survival skills needed to escape her nature-savvy hubbie. So listen up ladies,Julianna's quick thinking and sneaky shenanigans should be an example to all of us. You never know when you are going to meet your Mitch. Here are a few of the many valuable lessons that Julianna has taught us.(1)If you can't swim and you're trapped on an island, no need to learn. You will doggie-paddle your way to freedom as long as (A)the lake is under 250 yards long, and (B)hubbie pisses you off enough. Women of the world, there is a Julianna in all of us. Do yourself a favor and protect yourself from the possessive psychopaths with superpowers. After all, Mitch could swim without getting wet--who knows what else he is capable of?

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
this movie is about an upper middle class girl and her newlywed husband. they leave on the second day of there marraige for a secluded island that no one rlly knows about.
but after awhile things change. her husband becomes very controlive and possesive of her and bc she cant swim he even chains her up! he tampers with the car so it wont start because he is trying to keep her there on the island. we find out that he killed his father in a hunting accident. she must fight her way out and make her escape. there are so many simple and obvious things that she could have done to escape tho. why not just take a weapon and walk back to town in the night!? or wen she had to fight him she could have kicked him below the belt. there were so many things around her like rocks that she could have used and she should have taken that knife and stabbed him in the back of the knee to immobilize him. and if u stab someone right below there triceps it will paralyze there entire arm!(true fact.) and wen she had that cigarette she could have stuck it in his eye instead of his hands. anyway she ends up blowing his hand off with a rifle and escaping the island. in the end he gets the gun and we are left to believe that he killed himself. its not the best movie in the world but its something to watch at night wen ur rlly bored lol. (PS, Tara Reid looked great in those white shorts!)

A WONDERFUL LITTLE GEM OF A FILM.,

This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
THIS IS AN AWESOME MOVIE THAT FAR TOO FEW PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT. TARA REID (VICKI FROM THE AMERICAN PIE MOVIES) GIVES A SUPERB PERFORMANCE AS THE MAIN CHARACTER, AN UPPER-MIDDLE-CLASS GIRL NAMED JULIANNE. AND KIP PARDUE IS NOT SO BAD HIMSELF AS HER ON-SCREEN HUSBAND MITCH. AFTER THEIR WEDDING DAY THESE TWO YOUNG PEOPLE DECIDE TO SPEND 2 WEEKS ON A VERY PRIVATE, VERY SECLUDED LITTLE ISLAND THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO KNOW ABOUT. AFTER A WEEK OR SO ON THE ISLAND THINGS START TO CHANGE OR, RATHER, MITCH DOES. HE STARTS BECOMING VERY POSSESIVE OF JULIANNE AND VERY CONTROLLING. HE DECIDES THAT THEY WILL STAY ON THE ISLAND FOREVER. HE WON'T LET JULIANNE LEAVE EVER!! WELL SHE MAY BE AN UPPER-CLASS GIRL USED TO THE FINER THINGS IN LIFE BUT JULIANNE IS CERTAINLY NO FOOL. SHE VERY QUICKLY LEARNS TO DO WHAT SHE HAS TO DO IN ORDER TO MAKE HER ESCAPE. THIS REALLY IS A VERY SUSPENSEFUL, ON-THE-EDGE-OF-YOUR-SEAT TYPE OF THRILLER. IT IS MOST DEFINITELY WORTH A WATCH!! WATCH THIS MOVIE OBJECTIVELY AND I GUARANTEE YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! THIS MOVIE DELIVERS!!!!!
P.S. WHERE OH WHERE IS MY GRIZZLY ADAMS??? SOMEONE TO TAKE ME AWAY FROM CITY LIFE TO A NICE QUIET SPOT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS? I AM STILL WAITING!!!!! COME AND GET ME KIP!!!!

Best, and Inevitably, Forgotten,
By
This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
This movie is standing on new release shelves in video stores right now, but soon it will fade away as it deserves and most rental places will only carry it if they had 7 copies earlier, hoping for people to rent it.
Telling the story of two newly-weds heading to an island in the middle of a lake for their honeymoon, "Devil's Pond" is ultimately stupid, pointless, and forgettable. The couple seems semi-happy at first, but as the husband Mitch demands to stay on the island longer than wife Jules wants to, she begins wondering whether or not she's a prisoner there, considering she can't swim. It'll take until the end for the viewer to be sure how pointless and forgettable the movie is, but one can see the stupidity as it goes along. The tension between the two characters seems to be set off by nothing at all. Jules wonders about Mitch's lockbox and they make up... Then she wants to leave the island early and they both over-react. It culminates when the two weeks are up and he still won't go. It's all about his controlling of her and none of it seems to make any sense. The situation gets worse and worse, but you can't help caring less and less. The acting is abominable. Maybe the movie's tired plot would have seemed better had the lead performances been better. These actors work best as supporting characters, or among a large cast. Instead, the entire movie is structured around their acting, since there is hardly anyone else in the movie, and though they try their best, it's a failure as a whole. The DVD has some extras, but why worry about them? The movie's uninteresting; the extras aren't any better. This movie has a feel akin to "Cold Creek Manor," but not in a good way. They share the feeling of "Where is this movie going?" through-out the first half. The trouble here is that the feeling doesn't disappear here until the last 10 minutes of the movie, at which point it's needless and predictable. There were chances for twists earlier; almost bordering the possibility of super-natural, but instead it's nothing but a young couple with an abusive husband. Pointless, forgettable, and it will be off video rental shelves soon enough, so few others may have to risk seeing it.

a gripping thriller,

I enjoyed this movie. If it were unknown actors it would be different but Tara Reid is her usual sexy self and she's a great actress. Kip Pardue is also good. Tara's charector thinks she has it all. A seemingly great husband Mitch. Well they go on their honeymoon and things begin to seem very messed up. Mitch doesn't want to leave the place and as far as he's concerned Tara's charector won't leave either. The ending is the best part of the movie but I won't spoil it. You just have to see this movie. It's the best movie ever.

Foolish suspense movie !,
By Durango Kid "Alex" (Brasília, DF Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
'Devil's Pond' is a movie that tries to be suspenseful, sometimes shocking, but the final outcome is weak and unconvincing. The story is not original and - most of all - is not gripping and tense.
A young middle class woman (Tara Reid) married with a young and handsome guy (Pardue) just to find out in a few days that her husband is a psycho and a really violent one. He imprisioned her in a kind of island in the center of a lake and there start her nightmare and her fight to break free. In fact, that's all the story here. And a story without any background to give any motive at all to the sick personality of the husband. The characters seem to be launched in an absurd situation just to play during ninety minutes a ludicrous and lame game of cat and mouse. Because of that, in a few minutes the viewer became tired with the movie and loses all the interest with the destiny of poor and beautiful Julianne, played by Tara Reid. I think that a good suspense movie needs more than violence, screams and a psycho characther with a mad look on his face to be a really good movie. 'Devil's Pond' seems to pay little respect to this point.

Pardue and Reid get lost in a dull thriller,
By Michael Bolts (superior, wiusa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devil's Pond (DVD)
Newlyweds, Kip Pardue (The Rules Of Attraction, Driven) and Tara Reid (American Pie 1 and 2, Urban Legend) go on a 2 week vacation to a secluded cabin in the middle of a lake that is owned by Pardue and his family. But there is a reason why Pardue is keeping Reid there, that is because she has a fear of water, Hydrophobia and it seems like Pardue has some control issues as we find out he's been stalking her for some time. Reid tries everything possible to escape but her pyschotic new hubby wont let her leave the little island. The two actors babble and fight but their acting abilities in this are drained with no excitment whatsoever and it gets kinda boring after awhile like Cabin Fever with no Fever in it at all. Also starring Meredith Baxter who is only in the beginning.
