Book Description

Aidan has always dreamed of a different life, one that was somehow more than what he knew. Desperate times force him and his adoptive family to move to Grandfather Patrick’s house on Devil’s Ridge, a tiny, rural town, that is far more than what it seems.

On the Ridge, Aidan finds a world filled with magic, monsters and terrifying beauty. He has discovered his “different life” but it isn’t at all what he expected, and not all of it is good.

With most of the townspeople involved in the Clan, a dark cult, and Grandfather Patrick as the Clan’s head, Aidan knows he isn’t just imagining that the whole town is out to get him. When Aidan is lured by an ancient force literally in his own backyard, he is rescued by the mysterious and handsome Asher Vane, who his grandfather calls a “demon”. Is Asher something terrible? More importantly, is Aidan?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Vol. 1 - Devil's Ridge
Vol. 2 - Hidden Past
Vol. 3 - Dark Prince
Vol. 4 - Legacy
Vol. 5 - The Gathering Dark

Extra Volume - Dream: Too hot for Amazon's TOS for Kindle on Amazon itself, but available elsewhere.

The manga is based on a novel, The Dark Earth, that is currently being serialized on the Raythe Reign site.  Devil's Ridge is the first volume of a multi-volume release.

Working with T. Wolv is an incredible experience.  When I see her drawings of scenes from the book, I can't discern any difference between what I imagined and what she put down.  While I would like the prose to take the credit for that, I believe that T. Wolv has worked so closely with me that she knows what I mean!  It really is watching the book come alive.  I hope you enjoy her beautiful artwork and the story, too!

About the Author

X. Aratare writes without a filter.  Whatever comes, however forbidden, is put down on the page. The result is a different kind of story with a darker, sensual edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A promising title January 19, 2012
By Chriss
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm quite impressed by the quality of this manga.

First of all, the art. It is quite beautiful and definitely above average for this genre of manga. The attention to detail, especially in backgrounds, is unusual and it really stands out. The character designs are distinctive, with well-done facial expressions, and they are all well-done and attractive. In particular, the two romantic leads are beautiful without being feminine.

The writing and characterization are also well above average. For such a short work (this is only the first volume), the author does an excellent job of creating good characters and establishing a plot. In particular, the relationships between the main character and the members of his family are effectively developed. I empathized immediately with them and wanted to see more of their story.

The plot is well-paced and left me wanting more--sadly uncommon in this genre of manga. I would be interested in this manga for the story alone, even if it wasn't a yaoi romance--which is only just beginning in this first volume.

It's a shame the first volume isn't a little longer. Another chapter or two would have given more information about the second romantic lead and their relationship. It does leave the reader eager for the next installment, however! If you're looking for what seems to be a beautifully drawn, intelligent paranormal story with some yaoi romance in the mix, check this one out. Recommended.

The collaboration between X. Aratarae and T. Wolf is off to a great start in this first volume of "The Dark Earth" manga. A captivating story, illustrated with great skill. The reader can tell that a great amount of love and dedication has been put into this release, and we must applaud both writer and artist. The print quality is also excellent.

I believe it is safe to say the first manga released by RR Publishing is a success. Here's to many more to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome June 17, 2012

I love the this authors works, this is the second novel I purchased and it does not disappoint! From the unique subjects to the well constructed believable characters , it hooked me immediately. The touch of horror tension touches the "palate" , immediately. The art work is gorgeous, with the heros bishuoen without becoming feministic. In fact, dare I say, Asher Vane, is buff and beautiful!
altho this issue is just layign the groundwork for a terrific story, it entraps the reader from nearly page one. I cant say enough about it, and I anxiously await the next installment.
From my experience with author X's first read , the sexual tension will be totally hot even for my jaded yaoi infested mind, and with the build up character growths Im positive it will BE amazing!
My advice to anyone that can read my terrible typing, is to buy whatever this author writes, It's totally worth it. From the scare and sex content , it is surely AWESOME!!

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality April 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The quality of this manga is superb. Top notch art, interesting story development, and good writing. It's a solid yaoi manga for those who like this kind of thing. My only problem is that the size of the files completely crashed my Kindle Paperwhite - but my iPad had no problems handling it, so I don't really care. Careful which device you load this on. Otherwise, well done.

This series is soooooo good! I LOVE the manga pieces. The artwork is gorgeous! It was so good it inspired me to go to the raythereign site just to read it all now before being printed into copies! However, the graphic manga in these copies is absolutely worth buying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh
It's interesting, but the drawings looked squished. It wasn't very long and the way it read was Americanized rather than traditional manga, which made reading difficult.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome but....
This novel would have had great plot and character development, if they gave the time to make it! It's beautiful and startlingly but too damn short for what you pay for. Read more

I really enjoyed it. Though not as easy to read in kindle because of the very small pages, still a very beautiful read.
