This book is very involved. It describes a creature, that some people think is an alien, hidden deep in the Earth that is always trying to destroy it. I enjoyed the book because as it goes on it steadily breaks off into four individual stories. That's what keeps me turning the pages, to see what happens to each group of people. This is an awesome series. I love the way the writer(s) have fitted in characters from the past. I would have given it a 5, but the editing STINKS! The last time I read something so poorly edited I burned it. Unfortunately I can't (won't) do that to my Kindle. I don't know who re-wrote this series for the Kindle, but they should be shot and then fired! I would...

I would bet(hope?)the book form is much better.

If you can see past the mistakes, do keep reading - but what a shame to ruin a terrific read like this.
--------------------------------
"Robert" tells me there is an upgraded version of this book - can anyone tell me how to get it without having to pay for it all over again?

And regarded mistakes? I thought I'd check a couple of chapters - between Chapters 6 thru 10 there were 164 spelling errors or indent mistakes. How is it possible that this could happen? Who is the idiot that wrote it for Kindle? Not one other book I've downloaded onto my Kindle has been like this...EXCEPT for this series. Unbelievable!

I am still reading, but being brought up short like that all the time is just plain wrong. If Kindle needs someone to transcribe books for them, I'm available! Just let me know.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Devil's Sea (Atlantis) (Paperback)
This book is very involved. It describes a creature, that some people think is an alien, hidden deep in the Earth that is always trying to destroy it. I enjoyed the book because as it goes on it steadily breaks off into four individual stories. That's what keeps me turning the pages, to see what happens to each group of people. One of my favorite characters in the book is Eric. He is my favorite because he is calm, a leader, and is a great detective. Eric's special power amazes me because it is just like the Ones Before. That's another reason why I like the book, because Eric is down to Earth and tries to have as litttle causualties, even though it is war. But my favorite part in the book is when at the end all of the paths of history start to merge. I like how a book can come together like that.

The series is an excellent one and I have been reading all of them in sequence. But like several other readers I am noting many spelling errors. I bought the book and downloaded it via Whispernet just like all of my other books. I don't know what's going on, but I don't care for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, September 13, 2011
The premise of these books is fairly interesting - there's some intelligence behind all of the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle and other similar areas. The author weaves in elements of the past, the future, high technology, and magical effects throughout the series. It takes a while to get used to it, but once you suspend disbelief you don't notice how arbitrary it seems.

Pretty quick reading - strikes a balance between description and dialog. After the first book, I wasn't super interested in reading the next, but I wanted to see how it ended. This second book ends in a cliff hanger as well setting up for the third. I found that there was a lot of retelling of the first book in the second. That was a bit bothersome after reading the first, but good for those that missed the first book.

There were a lot of misspellings throughout the book. Also a fair amount of grammar issues and some just plain typing mistakes. Distracting.

Good beach reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Really A Journey to Atlantis, September 13, 2011

The first four books occur in one timeline primarily and are focused on a single threat being made to the world and how to defend against it. These books are probably the easiest to follow and really build up the characters.

The last two books deal with how to defeat the threat being made. These books have two or even three stories going at once and are a bit confusing at times. I think the biggest issues is that sometimes the concurrent stories are given to much precedence in comparison with the main story. There is great detail given to some aspect of these stories that could be better used progressing the main story line.

I found the ending to the entire conflict to be a little short. It's pretty clear what happens to most of the main characters but nothing is really mentioned about the conflict as a whole other than it is finished.

The series as a whole is quite interesting though. There wasn't as much in respect to Atlantis as I figured there would be when I started the series but it still works. If you like a story that takes place over different times, deals with places like the Bermuda Triangle and the Nazca Lines, and maybe even takes you to other worlds then this is a series that would probably interest you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great continuation, January 2, 2011
This review is from: Atlantis Devil's Sea (Paperback)
This series got better and better. Especially once Doherty (Mayer) split the storylines, using an ancient battle and a current day thriller.
As far as the problems people are having with errors, I'm not seeing it. I know if the format downloaded is incorrect, it can come in screwed up, but that's the user's problem, not the publishers.
I highly recommend this series

5.0 out of 5 stars Vikings, Romans?, March 22, 2001

This review is from: Devil's Sea (Atlantis) (Paperback)
This guy needs to write historical fiction. The modern technothriller stuff is good, but, man, I really got into the historical stuff. Falco is intriguing, especially when you consider this guy wrote this before Gladiator came out. I had to check him out and found out his real name is Bob Mayer. I bought a couple of his older books under his own name and enjoyed them also. Anywho. Good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Proofreading? We don't need no stinking proofreading!, January 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love Doherty/Mayer's books, and this one is no different.

But the proofreading effort was horrendous. On the first title in this series, I didn't count the mistakes I caught, but this one I figured I'd see what I came up with. I counted no less than 81 mistakes! Unbelievable.

Whoever they're paying to proofread this series, they're paying them too much. It looks as if they fed the printed novel through an OCR program, and went with whatever the computer spit out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spelling errors on every page, December 6, 2010

This ebook is riddled with spelling errors, which makes it unpleasant to read. "Who Dares Win Publishing" certainly does not define excellence by offering an unedited product to the general public.

2.0 out of 5 stars Prrof read please!, October 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've read many of Bob Mayer's books before and enjoyed them. I am half way through the Gate series and it's a good read BUT the proof reading is non-existent and it effects the readability of the text greatly in some places. I don't know if it's Mr. mayer's, fault or Amazon's bit it's not acceptable. It's so bad on occasions that it takes 3-4 read throughs to understand what's actually being written. I don't care that this is an ebook format, no-one paying for a book should have to accept that poor level of quality. You certainly wouldn't with a printed copy. Proof read before publishing please!
