Editorial Reviews

Review

(`Ash/Black Veil' is) a haunting and frenetic cut, it sounds as if Thom Yorke had a lovechild with Four Tet. -- KEXP Blog

Commencing with a gently pulsating hum and concluding with a soothing recollection of rain, Sascha Ring, or rather Apparat, introduces us to the first single off his upcoming The Devil's Walk with no presumption of disarming you. -- Consequence of Sound

Something about Ring's combination of electronic subtleties, soothing vocal melodies, and driving rhythms just speaks to our inner softies. -- XLR8R

It took a few listens to Apparat's last Solo album "Walls" before I "got it." What I got was one of the most emotionally poignant, expertly composed electronic music I'd ever heard. "Walls" is up there on the list with Dark Side of the Moon for all time favorite albums.

It was with high expectations that I listened to "Devil's Walk." I did not expect a repeat, or even a sequel to Walls, but an evolution. Having listened to it about 4 times now, I'm simply mesmerized. This is Apparat's best album to date.

The album itself is very good. You can sample the songs on spotify or youtube, I'll let those speak for themselves. Something the product page does not discuss is the excellent packaging. $11.65 is the cheapest price you will find this vinyl anywhere on the internet, period. It comes with a foil embossed cover, 180 gram vinyl, oversized fold out poster, and the CD version is included for free with the record. If you're hesitating... buy this. Completely worth the money.

I can't believe how lucky I am to be listening to all these genius sounds, words, beats and all. 'Goodbye' mesmerized for the whole evening, 'Song Of Los' for the next day, the whole album for days, weeks and months. Fantastic stuff! Be warned, if you loved Walls, with buying this album you may become the happiest people alive;)

Apparat continues his melodic take on IDM with THE DEVIL'S WALK, which is, by turns, operatic and melancholic. The chorus that launches "Sweet Unrest" soon dwindles to a single, sad voice (Ring's own) for "Song Of Los," which maintains a strong thrum underneath. "Black Water," on the other hand, has a slow throb giving shape to the rest of the synth layers. Anja Plaschg takes vocals duties on "Goodbye," which sounds as if it's been distilled directly from heartache. Much of the album gives way to neo-indie-post-rock as well, but Apparat also has a few orchestral flights of fancy: the swelling strings on "The Soft Voices Die" or the plucked frenzy that starts off "Ash/Black Veil" before the rhythm comes in to pound away the sorrow. Meanwhile, the instrumental "A Bang In The Void" leans upon the marimba and vibraphone to impart resonance. And even though I miss Raz Ohara and some of the dirty funk that appeared on his previous album, WALLS, this album forges its own diabolic path.

I first fell in love with Apparat's music when I heard James Holden's "At the Controls" opening track called "Wooden". I was intrigued by his unfamiliar sounds. Then "Orchestra of Bubbles" Co-produced with Ellen Allien. And since then I've been following his work. Apparat's music brings a lot of emotion to me. I think his music is beautiful, a modern day electronic orchestra.

Since listening to Walls LP (that I thought was a masterpiece itself), I was excited to listen Devil's Walk. I think this album is well put together. It feels complete and the attention to detail, craftsmanship of each song is heard. Devil's Walk sounds a bit more organic than his previous albums. Sometimes dark with songs like "Goodbye". (which was featured in the last episode of Breaking Bad season 4). I feel a sense of beauty in the atmospheric darkness, like "Black Water" for example. What more can I say. I love this album. Definitely going in my all-time classics.

Almost 4yrs on and this album's still ticking. I'm still mesmerized by this fabulous electronic production. It's dark, thoughtful and uplifting at the same time - a work of art. Some of the Amazon reviews that mention the exquisite packaging of the vinyl, which I believe parallels the thought and emotion that went into the music itself.

Indeed, as a previous poster said, this is up there with Dark Side. And with The K&D Sessions for me too.

Be sure to check out Moderat as well, which is a collaboration between Apparat and Modeselektor. And Modeselektor in itself is great - electronica with a bit of a hip-hop/urban vibe.

Aka Sascha Ring; 4th release from German electronic artist finds him moving away from his
techno/IDM past. These are hypnotic electronic dreampop/shoegaze songs with an unusual
sense of organic warmth tucked away in the epic chorus lines. Power-soft, haunting vocals mix
with guitars & manipulated keyboards to create a compelling, gentle tranquility that slowly evolves
into an embrace that's comfortably beautiful, tenderly sinister. Shades of Sigur Ros, Bark
Psychosis, Diamond Rings.

"Black Water" was a track I got on Amazon cloud for free, otherwise I probably would never have heard it, or this fantastic music. Devil's Walk is one of those albums that has so many textures and levels of feeling and thought, it gives me shivers, seriously. It's one that I don't get tired of listening to ... I like electronic music that has feeling, and Apparat definitely puts so much heart into the music. I've listed to Walls a few times and it's growing on me.
