5.0 out of 5 stars The difinitive vocal version of "A Child Is Born"
Abbey Lincoln has been one of the greatest jazz singers of our time since the 1950's when she recorded her classic LP "Abbey Is Blue"(which contained her classic rendition of "Afro Blues"). This is one of Lincoln's many recordings for the Gitanes label in the early 90's. This release find her in peak form vocally, and her phrasing is particularly appealing in songs like...

This release find her in peak form vocally, and her phrasing is particularly appealing in songs like "Rainbow." The definite highlight of the cd is the over 6 minute long version of Thad Jones' classic "A Child Is Born", which is sure to bring tears to any parent or grandparents eyes. This cd finds Lincoln experimenting, as always with different forms of jazz, using the Staples Singers(including Mavis), as backup, but not nessicarly creating pretty harmonies, but rather potent in your face harmonies, on several songs. Lincoln is backed by a "youth chior" on her classic "People In Me." A nice classic yet contemporary classy jazz vocal album, featuring Stanley Turrentine and a long list of jazz all-stars.
