An Interactive Tutorial on CD-ROM takes full advantage of today's interactive multimedia technology to deliver a complete course on expert systems development, from definitions and background information, to hands-on help in applying concepts mastered to the development of expert systems. Concepts are introduced and demonstrated with a combination of text, sound, and pictures. The unique CD-ROM format allows each reader to proceed at his or her own pace, and is easily adapted for either individual or classroom study.

Special features include interviews with leading professionals in the field and a convenient on-line glossary. The simple, logical organization of the software makes it easy for even a novice to navigate through the system.

At the end of each segment, an assignment guides readers through the organized development of their own expert system prototypes.

System Requirements: IBM-compatible computer with a 386 processor or above, Windows™ version 3.1 or higher, minimum of 4MB RAM, VGA display or better, CD-ROM drive, MPC-compatible sound card.

1.0 out of 5 stars Much less than I expected from an expert in the field., October 30, 1999
This review is from: Devoloping your First Expert System: An Interactive Tutorial on CD-ROM (CD-ROM)
In viewing the "Book" description and the graphic of the "Book" jacket online prior to purchasing it, I assumed the product was a book with a CD inside to support exercises. When I received and unpacked the product, I found the box (which looked like a book jacket) contained only a CD. My reaction was " OK, new format for publishing, the product must be a CD with a digital book inside that I can study on-screen, and print portions of as needed". The product is neither. It is an outline of a course that requires purchase of a separate textbook to be even modestly useful. The CD "course" contains video clips of interviews with industry leaders that tell the listener expert systems are wonderful. The "course" outline and content are written on the screen and narrated nearly verbatim. An example used to illustrate development of an expert system is the game of tennis, a game in which I have no interest or expertise, and don't understand the game-specific terms or the strategies assumed (it seems) by the authors to be known to all. There is nothing to print and little to use in this course (in my opinion) that cannot be found by spending a few hours on websites of actual expert systems developers and users. The content of the "Course" never seems to get past a "Table of Contents" and "Introduction" stage. To me, this "course" is a real disappointment, given the stature and knowledge of the author. As a respected educator, entrepreneur, inventor, and a true revolutionary in several knowledge engineering fields, I feel he could have, and should have, done a much better job with the chosen subject. But to be sure, this is only one person's opinion....

1.0 out of 5 stars Look Out!, January 10, 2000
This review is from: Devoloping your First Expert System: An Interactive Tutorial on CD-ROM (CD-ROM)
The book title and design looks deceiving from the outside. Not only does the title comes with no accompany book, the quality of the CD contents is outright disappointing and quite honestly...useless. The CD contains 10 chapters, with each chapter presented in a slide presentation format, and accompanied voice annotations which plainly just read out the slide's content. Its not even worthy of one star, and I strongly urge the publisher to terminate this title.
