Editorial Reviews

Thrash metal madness in 2008 with Destruction's D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. album. Destruction are a German thrash metal band from L”rrach, in southern Germany. They are considered one of the three large bands of the Teutonic thrash metal scene. The band were originally named "Knight of Demon", changing their name in 1984. D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. is their tenth studio album and it features three guitarists as guest appearances, Gary Holt of Exodus and Jeff Waters of Annihilator, both playing solos in the song "Urge (The Greed of Gain)", in addition of Vinnie Moore from UFO.

"Release From Agony" will always be my favorite Destruction album and almost never do I find a band old as Destruction to be able to release something much later in their career that I feel deserves to sit among such classics. But this is one of those few. 'D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N." is a creative work of brilliance. The songs are full of energy, anger, rebellion and rage as any great thrash album should have. It packs an attitude straight from the 80s that you seldom ever hear on albums anymore. I love this album.

One of my favorite Destruction albums and includes one of their best riffs ever. As the other reviewer mentioned there is something more here than just straight ahead thrash, personally I don't find anything wrong with that. Comments to that post mention... riffs that don't "belong"... I couldn't disagree more. Why anyone wants to hear the same album repeated and a band to never stray beyond the formula is beyond me. I think this is one of their catchiest and heaviest albums ever. Yes you can be heavy and still be catchy. I would have liked to see them continue down this vein for awhile, but the subsequent albums have shown this was a bit of a one off. Not all the slower riffs work (Inner Indulgence for example) but taken as a whole album this is still a Destruction record, and the slower paced songs give the faster ones more punch. Elevator to Hell and Last Desperate Scream are both killer riffs, and the riff to Violation of Morality is one of the better guitar riffs ever recorded...you would have to be dead for that riff not to get your head bobbing. Also Destruction is not known for being catchy, but the vocal "hook" on Urge is something I find stuck in my head and singing to myself later, something I would have never said about any Destruction song... good stuff. It might not be straight ahead thrash, but its is not like Destruction hasn't given us plenty of that over the years (and continues to). If you are or ever were a fan of the band, this is well worth adding to your collection.

I wasn't sure how this album would fare but it sounds professional. DESTRUCTION seemed to be going through experimentation on this one. I'm glad I got it, love this band alot!
