Biography

For Jessie Ware singing is the easy part. Uncannily beautiful vocals have been pouring out of this London native since she was a kid. It’s the path from Girl With That Voice to full-fledged pop star – as she’s become back home in England in the last year - that’s proved trickier. In the wake of ecstatic advance American press, Ware prepares to release her US debut, the ... Read more in Amazon's Jessie Ware Store

Editorial Reviews

A showcase for Jessie Ware's soulful, melancholy vocals and effortlessly elegant songwriting skills, Devotion blends the ultra-modern feel of downtempo R&B with British electronic music a combo Nylon called 'saturnine sophisti-pop that has been lauded as the missing link between Sade and Whitney Houston,' while adding that her 'heady cocktail of soulful vocals, techno beats, and pop attitude is creating a sensation that s entirely her own.' The Washington Post notes Ware's 'ability to capture the heat of an adolescent blush with her cool, Sade-inspired alto ... her voice glows amid the detailed electronic timbres of right now.' The New York Times praises Devotion as 'meditative' and 'sensuous,' while Pitchfork dubs it as 'a uniquely soulful masterclass.' New York magazine selected Devotion as one of its Top Albums of the year, noting Ware's 'smoky reserve and sophisticated languor.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly devoted to this... August 23, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
British newcomer Jessie Ware's debut "Devotion" is a spectacular Soul/Pop/Trip Hop/Hip hop affair, with her smooth strong vocals floating above it all. She previously lent her voice to SBTRKT's eponymous 2011 Dance/Dubstep album on the upbeat tracks "Sanctuary" and "Right Thing To Do".

Produced by Dave Okunu of The Invisible (the UK's answer to TV On The Radio), "Devotion" is sublime and atmospheric, opening with the soothing title track sprinkled with twinkling keys. "Still Love Me" features semi-chanted lyrics which Ware tosses off in a cool affecting manner. Hip Hop influences show up in the groovy "No To Love" with scant lyrics, a guest rap, and Ware questioning "Who says no to love?". "Night Light" is a haunting mid-tempo track redolent of the eighties.

Everything stands out; the piano sprinkled power ballad "Wildest Moments" ("I've been looking at you too much"), the quivery "Swan Song", the dreamy "Sweet Talk" (with gently upbeat percussion), "110%" (her sultry vocals juxtaposed with bubbly synths, haunting synths, and snippets of Big Punisher's "Dream Shatterer"), the soulful ballad "Talking In Water", and the glitchy acoustic "Something Inside" (with cascading harmonies).

My favourite though is "Running" with stabbing synths, fleeting horns, stomping beats, stunning guitar squalls, and Ware singing as smooth as ice until she belts the line "I want to know is it mutual? Am I ready to run? Am I ready to fall? I think I'm ready just to lose it all." Honest and heartfelt, as is everything else on this album. Nothing out of place, and everything in its right place, this should make everyone devoted to Jessie Ware.

I happen to be one of those music lovers who prefers to have at least some knowledge of the artist/band I am listening to before commenting on what they have to offer. Recently however, there have been so many talents who have come out of the blue, and who have very little musical back round history to draw that type of opinion from. The only reason Jessie Ware was even made aware to me was because one of the employee's at Bullmoose Books & Music where I frequently shop commented while putting her newest single on the rack that he found her image striking despite knowing nothing about her. A little Wikipedia search later I did learn something about her. Born to a Jewish family in South London, this singer/songwriter sang for others artists I don't know anything about such as Joker and SBTRKT before launching out on her own. The manner in which her sound was described was more than curiosity inducing for me. When I followed up on that? Well, the effect was amazing.

Starting off the the title,"Wildest Dreams","Talking In Water" and the closer "Something Inside" are all dynamically produced songs blending instrumental ideas from contemporary electronica and urban jazzy soul/funk. Melodically all of these songs have a very romantically and poetically anthemic flavor about them. I do have some personal favorites here too. "Running" is one of them, with it's dreamy, glittery 80's type synthesizers harmonizing over fat electronic rhythms with the same effect along with the extremely strong melody and song craft of course. "Still Love Me",churning funk with it's combination of both minimal percussive and melodic rhythms and keyboard sounds, evokes directions pioneered from funk-soul/eurodance pioneers as Prince and Loose Ends in the 1980's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone's already said it.. September 24, 2012

I'm just echoing other reviewers' sentiments: this is a classic album, one that of course most folks will not hear. That's just the way it is with truly good music nowadays. But maybe I'll be wrong :) Either way I hope Jessie Ware and her fellow musicians on this album get the attention they deserve because this album is doing radio and the music industry and our ears a favor. What I love is your hearing all the eighties sounds we've come to love and respect such as Sade, Loose Ends, Soul II Soul and great pop R&B, but it's all Jessie Ware, not some lame copy. This is going to be on some serious rotation for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need Your Devotion August 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Been waiting to get this album ever since i heard the pre-release stream of it!

Led with her beautiful soulful vocals, this debut album from Jessie Ware wonderfully combines elements of pop, R&B, soul, and electronic music.
I already knew I loved her sound the very instant i heard the title track, a very calming ambient feel with a solid beat and muted guitar riffs.
My favorites are "Devotion", "Running", "Swan Song" although every song is worth listening to, definitely worth the buy for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding first album May 11, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'd heard several of the songs from this album. This is one of those rare albums where every song is quality, but I especially like Wildest Moments, Running and Taking in Water. Looking for a new artist to discover and enjoy? Buy this album; you won't be disappointed (unless you don't like quality vocals, song writing and arrangements).

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but maybe I can grow to like it.
One song does not make a cd. Tends to digress from what type of sound she wanted to do here.
