PURELY AWESOME!,
By George "phillyboi" (Morgantown, WV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
Newsboys, you guys rock!! People who live and worship Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, will love this album. Thats what Newsboys are all about. I can't understand how some people can call themselves true fans of Newsboys and at the same time say they are disappointed that the boys came with another worship album. NEWSBOYS ARE A CHRISTIAN BAND!! Its total hypocrisy to say that the band should stick to making albums like Going Public and Take Me To Your Leader just coz those weren't straight forward Worship Albums. Newsboys do what they do best for Christ whether they make a worship album or not. SO KEEP ROCKIN NEWSBOYS...KEEP FOLLOWIN YOUR HEART COZ YOU GUYS ARE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT!! GOD BLESS YOU GUYS ALWAYS!! JESUS RULES!!
George from West Virginia, USA.

Another great Newsboys album,
By Sparkles "luluuu" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
We've listened to Newsboys for years, and when they made their first worship album we were a little disappointed by the change in tone from the usual sense of humor we were used to. But I have to admit, Adoration grew on me (it didn't hurt that my nine-year-old listens to it constantly), and we were not disappointed with Devotion at all. I heard them do the title cut live, and I preferred it over the recorded version, but it's still good. They are a great live band, anyway. I hope they haven't completely abandoned their former style, but I like their worship music as well.
I have to confess to being a little perplexed at how someone could purchase this CD without knowing it is a worship CD unless they didn't look at it at all prior to purchasing it. Newsboys have never tried to hide the fact that they are a Christian group, and, while not all of them are, several of the song titles should be pretty obvious.

Ignore the critics (as usual),
By Music Lover (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
I read a review of this album right before it came out in CCM magazine and they basically said it was trash in a nice way. As usual the "critics" were dead wrong. If there is one thing working against this album it's that it comes out on the tail end of the trend to put out praise and worship albums. Don't let that dissuade you, however, from giving this album a try. I truly enjoy this album as the songs and lyrics are wonderful. The songs on this album get me in a worshipful mood. If you're looking for a great praise and worship album, look no further.

Devoted to praise!,
By
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
Newsboys last 2 cds, 'Adoration: The worship album', and this, 'Devotion' are albums of praise and worship songs. However, 'Devotion' is a decidedly rockier affair than the former.
The title track kicks things off with racing, pulsing guitars U2 style. The next track, 'I love your ways' is a sunny, upbeat rocker with a very catchy chorus, and a slight Coldplay ('Clocks') feel. 'Blessed be your name' is a duet with fellow Aussie Rebecca St James, which sounds eerily like U2's 'With or without you'. 'Presence (My heart's desire) is a tender ballad declaring a great need for God's presence. The two most outstanding tracks to me are 'The orphan', a beautiful ballad with wonderful, deep, poetic lyrics, and the Delirious?-like 'When the tears fall', a heartbreakingly beautiful ballad about resolving to cling to, and praise Jesus 'when hope is lost/ when pain surrounds/ through the darkest night'. It has a haunting, dark sound, with beautiful guitar fluorishes and a choir, but most of all, passion and sincerity in the vocals. Awesome!

Even better than I had anticipated!!!,
By Leanne "Leanne" (Saskatchewan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
I have only recently started listening to Christian Rock... for me,the Newsboys have stood out since the beginning. Adoration was a fantastic album but Devotion is even better! Some songs on the Adoration album needed time to grow on me, but with Devotion, every song spoke to me from the start. This is a great album and the lyrics are simple but deep. If you are looking for praise music, but don't like it cheezy, this album is definitely for you!

Not as Good as Adoration, but Close,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
This CD took me a few listens before I began to enjoy it. In fact, I didn't like it at first. I'm not a big Newboys fan, but Adoration had grabbed me with some standout new songs and a few covers I recognized. This CD has no truly great stand out song, and I didn't recognize any of the songs right off the bat. Still, I decided recently to give it a second listen. That's when I discovered how good it was.
While the project does have covers of new Matt Redman and Tim Hughes songs, most of the songs are original. Many of the songs are pure praise, like "God of Nations," "Name Above All Names," "Strong Tower," and "Blessed be Your Name." These songs sound like many of the modern praise songs, and are good. Several of the songs, however, do touch on the pain in life. I like the theme of praising God in spite of the pain, something that is often missing in modern worship music. This especially comes out in the last song, "When the Tears Fall," with lines such as "When hope is lost/I'll call you Savior. When pain surrounds/I'll call you Healer." This CD might not be as good as Adoration or immediately catch your ear. But it's worth giving it some time. I will certainly be enjoying my copy for a long time to come.

Better than I expected,
By
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
Having read a less-than-stellar review elsewhere, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this CD. I've been a big Newsboys fan for over a decade, but I personally enjoy their "whimsical" style better than their serious side. My favorite Newsboys songs feature Steve Taylor penned lyrics and catchy hooks like those found on "Take Me to Your Leader," "Who?," "Corneilius," or even "Belly of the Whale," which my little kids make me play over and over!
"Adoration" was enjoyable, but also felt a little rushed, like Peter Furler and Co. were just cashing in off the praise album trend that has been sweeping Christian rock for the last few years. I was expecting more of the same with "Devotion," so I was surprised when the leading track kicked off the album in such high gear I half expected Bono to join in on the second verse. Sounding more than a little like U2, the 'boys have crafted a powerful set of tunes here, particularly the first five. The song "Presence," the first single, which didn't impress me when I first heard it on the radio, sounds so much better when it follows the anthem "I Love Your Ways." I still prefer the catchy pop sound of the Newsboys, but this album was worth the purchase. It easily makes my 30-minute morning commute feel much shorter, and leaves me feeling uplifted. Nice job, 'boys!

Nice follow-up to Adoration,
By
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
I am a more recent Newsboys fan, so I will not pretend to be able to compare this album with all their previous work. But, Devotion is a nice follow-on to the last album, Adoration. It is not quite as strong in my opinion, but it does have some really good worship songs.
Overall, I think the Newsboys are a strong modern worship band, and they have created some great songs on previous albums. As far as this disk does, my favorite song on the whole album is "Orphan" which I think has a really different sound, and I also like "Devotion", "I Love Your Ways", and "Presence". Although some may disagree I really do not like their version of "Blessed be your name". I think it pales in comparison to the original, or the version put out by Tree63. I literally hit the skip button everytime this song comes up. I hate to hear a great song ruined. Having said that, I still recommend this album to any Newsboys fans, or anyone looking for some quality modern worship music.

Amazing, fantastic, awesome, need I say more?,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Devotion (Audio CD)
I was not expecting this. Not expecting something this good, is what I mean. I've been a big fan since the Newsboys' previous release of "Adoration", and I thought you could never find anything better. By now, my opinions have completely changed. This album, I think, is way more heartfelt than the others, more worshipful, more surrounding, and more mature. The lyrics are wonderfully written, I can tell they put a lot of heart into writing them.
"Devotion" makes a great opening song, and it should give you a good impression on the album. I love the heavy guitar, and the tune. "I Love Your Ways" is a bit different from most of the songs, but in a good way. The beat is very different, and I like it A LOT. It's very creative, and well written. "Presence (My Hearts Desire)" was the first song off this album to become a hit (it was released to radio a few months before the album came out), and it turned out to be a pretty big one. It seems to carry some sound from "You Are My King (Amazing Love)", which was from Adoration. I love the part where they're repeating "I wanna feel your presence, I wanna feel your presence". "Strong Tower" is one of the latest songs off this album to make a hit. It's doing very well, too. It has very memorable lyrics. It didn't turn out to be my very favorite off the whole album, but overall I did like it a lot. "God Of All Nations" is another memorable one. It has a great intro, and a great chorus. It's another song that's showing how mature the band has made their music. "Blessed Be Your Name" is amazing, although I feel Rebecca St. James seemed to take up to much space, vocally. I do like her, but, I kind of hate to say that I wish they didn't record this song with her on the album. I didn't mind them singing it with her live on the Adoration tour, but in this studio recording, I could barely even hear the vocals of Peter, Phil, and Bryan, and Rebecca's were just going over their vocals. Otherwise, I loved this song and it was amazing. "The Orphan" is one of my three favorite songs on the album. It's indescribably beautiful. I love the guitar, and the piano. Peter's vocals always sound very wonderful, but in this song, they sounded especially sweet, and gentile. You're going to love this song, no matter what. "Landslide Of Love" is also one of my three favorite songs on the album. It's one of the most memorable. The overall sound of it is very sweet and happy. The lyrics are great. It's a very outstanding song, I've always loved it. "Name Above All Names" should surely come to your liking. It's another memorable one. It has great guitar licks, and great tune. I like it a lot! "When The Tears Fall" is my most favorite out of my three favorites. The Newsboys have always known how to end their albums right, and this is the best end they've ever put to an album. It's almost impossible to say how amazing this song is. Every time I hear it, I begin to cry. There has never been a song that has really "gotten me" like this one. It just really touched some parts of me that haven't really been touched before. This song is going to be loved by all, I know that for sure. It's also surely going to bring some tears of praise. This is absolutely the best song the Newsboys have done in their entire history of recording. I highly recommend this album. Some die-hard fans of "Adoration" might not be to pleased and may think it is less creative and less unique, but I'm one of the people that got seriously touched by it. There's no doubt that the members have grown so much, musically and spiritually. I'm very proud of them, and happy for them.

Another amazing album,
By Rachel Marquardt (Buffalo, NY) - See all my reviews

Once again the Newsboys have managed to put their hearts and faith into their music using powerful lyrics and melodies to reach not only believers, but also those who are starving for the Truth.
It is amazing to see how this band has progressed in musical style, not only since their beginnings, but even since Adoration. This is one band that will not shy away from seeking the Truth, the Lord, and worshipping Him. As well as reaching fans, the Newsboys not only teach about our Father and our faith, but help us give expression to our powerful need to worship our Father. All of this is evident within the music, which is precisely why they have such an extensive fan-base. The Newsboys aren't just another band, they are a ministry to us all, and in seeking to glorify the Lord in all aspects of their lives, it is no wonder the Lord continues to bless them and all they do. I firmly believe you won't be disappointed with a single song and strongly suggest you purchase this amazing Newsboys album. |
