5.0 out of 5 stars Devotionals, Indeed, July 13, 2005
By
S. J. SULLIVAN (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Devotionals (Songs for Shunkin) (Audio CD)
"Amazon" claims this album is by Cynthia Hopkins, but it sounds an awful lot like my favorite singer, Gloria Deluxe, so I'm going to assume that that's just a typo. That said, I love this album to pieces, literally. Every time I buy this album I love it so much I end up breaking it up into little pieces, thinking that perhaps this way I will have more of the album, somehow, but it always (surprise, surprise) ends up making the CD virtually unplayable, and thus I have to buy the album again, and the vicious cycle continues. But me and my cute little rituals aside, this album is so freaking wonderful I might just throw up. It's so good I want to slash my wrists, or someone's tires, or prices. I know these are dramatic reactions, some may even feel they are melodramatic, tragic, or tragicomic, but still, one wonders: why would I react with such violence to such beauty? Well, it's not so much that this is an unreasonable question as that it is unanswerable, unfathomable, insurmountable. All I know is when I listen to this Japanese-short-story-inspired album, I get so lost among the windchimes and shafts of light deep inside its shattered heart that it frees some dark undulating power within me and when I wake up hours or even days later, horrible, wondrous things have occurred and I have only the most scattershot memories of them. This might seem strange to you, I acknowledge that, I do, but keep in mind that your ways, however humdrum they may seem to you, may seem strange to me as well, and to many others. We are all exotic, broken creatures, are we not? And is this not exactly the truth that Gloria consistly uncovers?
