Book Description

Life in Gloucester Massachusetts will never be the same.

Raging storms, fierce winds, shadows shifting in the breeze. Storms are nothing new for the fishing hamlet.

But darkness has come to claim the hearts and minds of those that stand in it too long. When that happens, love will be ripped from man leaving only violence, despair, and gnashing teeth.

Except for two.

Roberta is a single mom, a waitress struggling to get through life after a rocky start tainted by murder and loss. Her heart yearns for Gabriel; a deputy living in the shadow of the chief. He's a battle weary soldier ready to settle down.

When the storm comes, when the murders start, it will be up to them to stop it before darkness isn't just an empty void.

Before it takes the shape of man and pulls them all into the sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome blend of romance and horror. May 25, 2014
By cm3
Format:Kindle Edition
Having lived in New England for half my life I am drawn to any book that is based there. Add the fact that Jill Cooper wrote the book, the author of my favorite Glistening series, I'm there.

Devour is a romance/horror book. I wish more authors wrote in this genre. Roberta is an awesome MC, she has torment, hardship and is a single mom. She lost her fiancé to the sea and is pretty much left alone and very young as the sole provider for her daughter. Basically, besides her daughter, she has nothing left to lose. She's had weird things happen to her pretty much all her life but when the townspeople around start acting VERY strange, it's hard for Roberta to duck her head as usual and ignore it. In walks her knight in shining fatigues, Gabe, who is her fiancées best friend. That's when things get really interesting.

Devour is an awesome blend of romance and horror. It's was a fantastic read, I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the genre like me. It was fast paced and kept you thinking the entire book. I love when books aren't predictable. I find contemporary romances and NA books can be that way but when you throw horror in there? All bets are off.

I received this book as a review copy, positive review was not required and I was not compensated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, scary as heck, read July 19, 2014
By Becca
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A Massachusetts resident I love anything by local authors that takes place here. I have visited Gloucester, and Cooper does a fantastic job turning the town into a unique place. So much so it becomes, to me, a main character in the story. She keeps just enough of the familiar landmarks so you know you're on the north shore, but makes it all her own. Fabulous job.

The characters. Flawed, hurting, searching, and falling in love. Oh ya, don't forget the zombie like corpses taking over the town, and the human like fog that has a vendetta. The story is ripe with symbolism. 'The Darkness, will overtake you.' Not only the darkness in the form of the curse from the sea, but the darkness of our own hearts. That darkness that turns you inside out, and robs you of your sanity. That's what makes this book scary as hell. The darkness that lives within us, and the small actions that can set it free. She does a fantastic job of weaving romantic tension between Gabe and Roberta, as well as setting them up for an epic battle of good v evil. It left me feeling that what they were battling was really a metaphor for the feelings and regrets that were troubling them. The battles we all face inside.

This is really a stellar read that left me with chills. I couldn't put it down. The only thing stopping me from giving it five stars is the few editing errors I saw. small little word mix ups and tense errors. But they really didn't take away from the story. To me it still was fantastic. Jill Cooper did an amazing job and I highly recommend this book to any horror fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes romance needs horror! May 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was a friggin' blast! From the very beginning I felt like I was on a roller coaster - but not like the Magic Mountain kind, more like the sneaky-what's-around-the-corner type. It was awesome!
There was this one part in the book - I won't spoil it - but I was like, "NO SHE DIDN"T!". Yeah, it was great.
And while the murders and darkness are so integral to the story - it is a horror afterall - I couldn't help but be so excited for the romance unfolding with every page and with such great characters. A cop! I mean seriously.
The two biggest emotions during this read was anxiety and hope. What a ride! I highly recommend Devour. Jill did a great job!

More About the Author

I could write this in the third person. I could tell you what I like, where I was born, and what my favorite things are.

But instead, I'll say I don't want to write like everyone else. I don't want to craft stories you've read a thousand times before. I want my novels to be a cinematic experience, blending themes, genres, and situations unlike any you've ever read.

I want to break the rules. I want you to break out in a cold sweat as you read my books out of fear, love, and excitement. I want my books to be an experience. When you finish, I want you to feel something. Good or bad.

If you do, then I'll have succeeded. If not, I'll keep trying.
