Book Description

Clara has it all. A wrestling star boyfriend, popular friends, all the right school activities...pretty much a perfect life...up until her parents died. Now she lives with the Pastor and his family and though they take good care of her, she feels alone. Then her boyfriend, Tate, starts to show signs of trouble when a new guy, Eli, comes to town. Clara is fascinated with him but hides it until something happens. Eli confesses to her that she gives him something he's never had before...something he needs. Everything is about to change for this normal, pretty, popular girl in a supernatural way.

From the Author

"I don't know, Clara. I've never told anyone what I am before."
          "Why not?"
"This is a pretty good example of why, I think," he said softly. "You're afraid of me and I never wanted that."
"Then why'd you tell me, Eli? Why not just let me think you were a normal guy?"
"Because you deserved to know the truth. And I didn't want to spend any of my time with you living a lie. I wanted, for the first time, to be myself with someone."

5.0 out of 5 stars Another absorbing and romantic story from Shelly Crane November 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was reminded of Samantha Young's book Blood Will Tell (Warriors of Ankh #1) in that something inherently "evil" was struggling against its nature to behave "good". And just like Warriors of Ankh, this book is beyond enthralling. After discovering it as a kindle new release, I downloaded it and read it in one day. It really was too good to put down.

Eli is a Devourer, an evil creature that lives/feeds off of the bad emotions of humans such as terror and jealousy, but years ago he turned from his wicked ways and does not hurt the humans. Clara Bell is an orphan whose boyfriend is kind to her but she doesn't love him. When she meets Eli, she finds an instant attraction to him that she unsuccessfully tries to weaken by paying more attention to her boyfriend. But then her possessive boyfriend starts behaving badly and she finds herself in danger not only from his persistent attentions, but from Eli's family members who don't approve of his straight and narrow lifestyle.

I have to admit this story reminded me a lot of Twilight with Vampire Edward trying to deny his evil bloodthirsty heritage and Eli trying to overcome his evil tendencies for the love of a human. I liked Twilight so that doesn't bother me. I loved reading this story and despite the similarities, the plot was original and absorbing.

The bad editing was definitely distracting because there were many words omitted and many sentences that would say (for example) "wouldn't" instead of "would" and you would have to go back to make the paragraph make sense. I do not take off stars for editing, just informing those who get bugged by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating start to a new series!!! November 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you have read Significance, Accordance, Collide and Uprising, you know what an amazing writer Shelly Crane is. In Devour, she has branched out into a whole new paranormal venue and it is grand and refreshing. The characters and plot have great depth, and the emotions and sensations are vivid and magical. Of course, in true Shelly Crane fashion, the bond between the two romantic characters is filled with angst, longing and.....heat. This is not your typical YA paranormal romance. Shelly has introduced a plethora of previously unheard of elements that will make the reader gasp with joy. Read Devour for a roller coaster ride of emotions, troubles, longing and love. Sit back and get ready to be Devoured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Amazing Writing and Story!! March 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When I got this book I did not read the blurb *again you should know I do this often* Love to just see how the story plays out. So, I was fascinated by this story. We start with Clara who seems to have a Great life with an all american boyfriend, spirit squad and best friends. Well, it's not as great as it looks.

Clara... What an amazing character she is. She is stuck in this place in her life until she meets Eli and then things start changing for the better. You can see amazing growth from her, she was already a well rounded character but she gets even better. Her journey throughout is gripping and I cannot explain it all as I don't want to give anything away :)

Eli... Oh here is another Awesome guy from the one and only #QueenOfSwoon! His story is just engrossing and he is an absolutely fascinating character! He's lived his whole life one way and then BAM! it's all flipped upside down for Clara. Such a great fit the two of them are! *found cool guy here on the net*

The "friends" hmmm I just really didn't like them and wanted to choke most of them... which means they were just well written too. I really did enjoy Patrick!! Can I just say I need more like right now!! Again... If you haven't read this.. put it on your list your gonna want to GET IT NOW!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story... But ... November 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm a bit confused. I don't think the reading level and the story matched too well in this book. I can see middle school girls enjoying it, as it appears to be written for that age level, but some of the more mature scenes aren't appropriate for that age. The story was good, I just felt the writing was a bit too juvenile and much too sappy for my taste.

Would I read the sequel? No, probably not
Would I recommend this to a friend? No, probably not
Would I read this author again? Yes, I really enjoyed some of her other books

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazed again! November 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've loved everything Shelly's written so far and this was no exception. I was so so excited the whole time and couldn't stop reading. You fall in love with Clara and believe in Eli. Shelly's writing makes you feel like you are part of their world. It's a story I would recommend to anyone including my teenage nieces. It's not just a girl meets cute mysterious boy story. It deals with choices you have to make in your life and looking at yourself for who you truly are and not how others percieve you. You will LOVE it. The only problem - having to wait for the next book. Thanks Shelly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extravagantly Loved it!!! July 24, 2014
By lindylu
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What can I say about this story but amazing!! I loved it!! Clara was a good character that I loved she had a great personality and Eli whew! The instant connection thing was awesome. If you love stories with no love triangle this is it. Clara's boyfriend ends up being a douche and she falls right into Eli's arms... Sorry for your loss Tate. But that is where all the problems begin for them two! Even though they have no problems but everyone else does it causes major upsets that evolves other Devourers (Devourers are those that feed off your essence) and the Horde (a bunch of Devourers who think they are appointed to keep their race one). Clara and Eli are now bound and then that's where all their problems get worse!!

I prefer the Significance Saga, but this is the start of something good. I wish it was a little longer, and had a better process of how Clara and Eli fell in love.

More About the Author

Shelly is a NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY bestselling author from a small town in Georgia and loves everything about the south. She is wife to a fantastical husband and stay-at-home mom to two boisterous and mischievous boys who keep her on her toes. She hoards paperbacks, devours sweet tea, searches year-round for candy corn, and loves to spend time with her family and friends, go out to eat at new restaurants, site-see in the new areas they travel to, listen to music, and, of course, loves to read, but doesn't have much time to these days with all the characters filling her head begging to come out.

Her own books happen by accident and she revels in the writing and imagination process. She doesn't go anywhere without her notepad for fear of an idea creeping up and not being able to write it down immediately, even in the middle of the night, where her best ideas are born.
