An Amazingly Good Collection, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Dew Drop Out: New Orleans Second-Line R&B Jam (Audio CD)
Dew Drop Out is described on the back cover as "a New Orleans second-line R&B jam," and it surely is that, but it is more than that--it is one heck of a jazz recording. Players include Herlin Riley on drums (awesome job!), Walter Payton (no, not Sweetness, the late Chicago Bears running back, but rather the father of noted trumpeter Nicholas Payton) on bass, Mark Bingham and June Yamagishi on guitar, Reggie Houston on baritone sax, Clarence Johnson III and Tim Green on tenor sax, Jessie Davis on alto sax, LeRoy Jones on trumpet, and Craig Klein on trombone.
The music is steeped in the New Orleans jazz and R&B traditions, with Riley's second-line drumming style the driving force. A really special treat is "Jambolero," which answers that burning hypothetical question, "What if Maurice Ravel had been from the French Quarter instead of from just plain old France?" An amazing cut from an amazingly good collection. To top things off, the sound is clean and dynamic, with plenty of bottom end.
