Ingenious and expressive...,
This review is from: Dew (Audio CD)
Although Dew is only Gwendolyn's second album, it solidifies her position as one of America's most original and daringly personal songwriters--a rare bird in an industry dominated by cliché and imitation. Gwendolyn has a gift for combining emotional acuity with very precise arrangements, and her unconventional singing voice and acoustic guitar technique provide an unforgettable listening experience. The best songs on Dew--the cathartic "Cast Away" and the melancholic "Nothing" and "Dark Mind"--have a depth and sophistication one would expect of a much older artist. Two of the more adventurous tunes, "Vacuum" and "Insect Perspective" (actually re-workings of tracks from her first album, Ultrasounds), are especially inventive and reveal a confident and skilled performer who understands that experimentation is most interesting when it grows out of a solid composition. For anyone looking for music that is both ingenious and expressive, Dew is essential listening.
