5.0 out of 5 stars Great bits in a sturdy case
What a great purchase! The bits are sharp and sturdy, and they cut through wood like it's butter. They come to a point at a wide angle, so they're less likely to slide away from your drilling point as you start drilling.

I've only owned them for a few weeks, so I can't attest to how long they'll stay this sharp. Also, I've yet to try drilling through metal.

The set comes with two bits for some of the popular sizes, which is great since I tend to lose or break my 1/8" bit all the time.

The case itself is quite sturdy, but a little oversized. The bits are held firmly in place, so you never open your case after a bumpy car ride to have all 13 bits fall to your feet. If you own a DeWalt drill, it fits snugly in the drill case.

My one complaint is that the sliding lock is really tough to open and close.

you have been reading my reviews lately, you know I have reviewed drill bits. Alot of drill bits in fact.Spadebits, auger bits, hole saw bits, masonary bits and finally twist bits. These are the standard drill bits most of us are familiar with and use for drilling in metals, woods and plastics. Good bits are vital to a drills ability to do its thing. I have reviewed many(see other reviews) and these bits had some problems.

I got 2 sets of these bits on clearance (what else is new)
This set includes two 1/16-inch split point bits; 1 each split point bits from 5/64- to 7/64-inch-by-64ths; 2 1/8-inch split point bits; 1 each Pilot Point bit: 9/64, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16; and 3/8-inch Pilot Point bits in a tough yellow plastic case.

I like The "no-spin" shank used on bits sizes 3/16-inch and over, as it eliminated the anoyance of bits spining in the chuck instead of drilling.

In use, I found these bits to be a bit too aggressive due to the pilot point grabbing violently. If my workpiece hadn't been clamped down, the results may have been disasterous. I would recomend these only for rough work where tearout and overall finish didnt matter. These bits simply rip into the workpiece with a little to much zest for my taste. You could damage some expensive wood with these bits performing like this. They have all the smoothness of a spade bit.

At 16 dollars and change from amazon, they are reasonable cheap. Good quality, sure. But way too aggresive for my liking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and durability, January 5, 2004

I was amazed at the rate these drill bits chew through metal... I drilled through a 1/4" of a piece of tempered steel in half a minute and through 16ga copper sheet in barely a second. The cobalt bits in the copper were incredible, I did not even have to apply much pressure to get the bit to bite.

Very impressed.

I bought htese because my old drill kit was missing a few bits and they were getting old. I had no idea how dull they were until I bought these. The effort required to drill holes was minimal. No more pushing hard and smoking holes from the heat of a dull bit.

Sure, I could have sharpened my old bits, but for the cost of a Drill Doctor, I can buy enough of these sets to last a lifetime.

I checked other drill bits and liked the fact that the DeWalt has a pilot drill point on the end of the drill bit. That was a big plus for me. Other drill bits by other manufacturers didn't, or at least for those readily available that I checked. The set also included a 3/8" drill bit, which is usually uncommonly included in a smaller set of drill bits.

Had these for nearly a year now and I'm glad I bought them. They replaced some black oxide junk I had from Ryobi.
First thing is that this are very stiff. They do not bend like the cheap stuff I had before. Second thing is that they cut into stuff like a enraged demon. Most of my projects are wood or sheet metal and they dont slow down one bit. They are a tad too aggressive for me at times, but all I do is slow down and not push too hard. Lastly, they seem to have great wear characteristics. All my bits still look like new, despite fairly heavy usage.

Highly recommended if you're in need of high quality bits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for metal, December 26, 2010
This review is from: Dewalt DW1263 14-Piece Cobalt Pilot Point Twist Drill Bit Set (Tools & Home Improvement)
I use these cobalt bits for metal and my titanium bits for everything else. I actually like the pilot point and didn't experience any walking. Non-cobalt bits on metal are a waste of time in my experience. I can definitely see these as being too aggressive for wood and similar density materials though.

I purchased this drill bit set for use around my house. I have a Makita cordless drill that this set works perfectly with. The bits appear to be very sturdy and reliable. The variety and size of bits is perfect for around the house ... 1/16 up to (a large) 3/8. The set includes two of the most popular sizes, 1/16 and 1/8 ... a well thought out and nice touch. The case that houses the bits is fantastic ... very sturdy with a good closing/locking system. I would highly recommend this set of drill bits for anyone looking for a set to use around the house (my only knowledge of use). Good bits, good selection of sizes, good quality, good storage case.

4.0 out of 5 stars I thought anything cobalt would be superior..., December 19, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dewalt DW1263 14-Piece Cobalt Pilot Point Twist Drill Bit Set (Tools & Home Improvement)
Before buying this Dewalt Cobalt set, I had been using an inherited set of craftsman bits labeled "the best bits we sell", and that was all I knew about them.

Preparing to do some metal working, I decided I must have a set of cobalt bits. So no sooner than receiving the set, I just happened to need to drill into a table saw stand of 1/8 inch likely hardened steel.

And though it probably shouldn't be done, put the 1/4" bit in my hand drill, pushed up against the leg, pulled the trigger only to have it skate down the side of the work.

Problem here is that though this set has a split point, the angle I believe is only 118 degrees, rather than these craftsman at 135, with a pilot point, which in combination works much much better.

And and after moving to the press, this has proved to be a significant disadvantage for not just at the start of the cut, but the greater angle and pilot point seems to pull the bit through the material with ease.
A much nicer cutting experience.

I imagine if your only doing woods, this may not be noticed as much.
But for the price when here on sale its hard to resist.
If I could have done it again, I would opt for the 14 or 16 pcs sets which have sizes up to 3/8ths.

And it should be noted the cobalt makes the bit more hard, but more brittle as well. Should maybe keep cobalt on the drill press, eventually your bound to have an accident using a hand drill.

This review is from: Dewalt DW1263 14-Piece Cobalt Pilot Point Twist Drill Bit Set (Tools & Home Improvement)
Good set for working with soft metals with one caveat: upon penetration these bits pull the worked piece towards the drill quite agressively. Otherwise they are very effective, and the extra bits offer that assurance that you won't have to pause a project should you accidentally break one of those sizes.

The case is a bit bulky compared to other drill sets, but that's actually a good thing -- it's deep enough and there's enough extra space above the large bits to hold a 1/4" cordless screwdriver/drill chuck adaptor. (YMMV, mine is a Skil #92170)
