4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond "Groove is in the Heart.", October 9, 2002
By
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
I'm probably one of the twelve Americans who bothered to keep listening to Deee-lite after they headed to one-hit-wonder-land with the release of their global smash "Groove is in the Heart." Mainstream folks may not have known it, but they suffered a loss when they shunned "Dewdrops in the Garden." A step forward from their debut "World Clique" and a departure from the PC-isms of "Infinity Within," Dee-lite's third album is loaded with quirky dance pop that jams a little harder this time around. The trio teams up with DJ Little Louie Vega for the housed-up ditty "Bittersweet Loving," which has never-better vocals from Lady Miss Kier. "Call Me" aggressively palpitates with energy with its deep bass and thumping beats, and they give you a little mid-tempo flava on the sensual "Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest." Granted, this album isn't for mainstream audiences, and while the material sounds appropriate for the clubs, "Dewdrops in the Garden" may be too edgy radio play. But if you want a platter of groovilicious tunes with teeth sharp enough to bite, this joint is worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deee-Changes Are In The Groove, October 7, 2000
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
This is Deee-Lite's last album of new material before they broke up. It sure was nice of them to leave us with a legacy, wasn't it? "Dewdrops" is a radical step away from the message mission that was put on "Infinity Within." This album is more sexy and self-assured, and Kier's voice is as sexy as ever.

It starts off with the hip-hop dance of "Say Ahhh..." a classic in Deee-circles. It's really funky and brilliant. Next, Lady Kier tells that we can move, groove, and "mind melt." "Bittersweet Loving," "River of Freedom," "Somebody," & "When You Told Me You Loved Me," are really funky house-numbers that segue-way nicely into one another, but there's nothing too outstanding about them.

"Stay In Bed, Forget The Rest" is in the same vein as "Say Ahhh..." - very sexy and dancey, another Deee-song for the books. "Call Me" is not a cover of the classic Blondie song, sadly, but the Deee-sters have made their own sassy number with Kier blowing off a loser who hasn't called her, and whose line is always busy. "Why don't you get call-waiting or something?" Kier asks.

The rest of the disc is just pure ecstasy. It's trippy, fun and light-hearted. You may remember "Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector" from the movie "Party Girl" starring Parker Posey. In her hallucinating scene, that's the song! "Sampladelic" is a short little hot number, and "Bring Me Your Love" is a fierce dance hit for all to enjoy.

"Picnic In the Summertime" is a fresh a vibrant song for a day out with your friends and "Apple Juice Kissing" is another safe-sexy song that will make you melt. "Party Happening People" is a cool dub-style track the makes everybody move their feet, and is "DMT".

"What Is This Music" is a poem by Lady Kier that closes out the Deee-adventure, or so we think! Fast forward your CD and you'll hear one interlude that says:

"Dafodille yellow comes into promincense in a florescent fashion It may sound humorous, but it's important and it helps."

Forward some more, and there's a very hot instrumental song that takes your breath away.

And still...fast forward some more! And there is a FAB remix of "Bring Me Your Love."

So if you're a Deee-Lite fan, and don't have this, you are sorely missing out, as this could be their best work together! Plus, all the fab secret tracks on the end make for a cool treat! Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to give ya a mean "Perma-Grin!", November 21, 1999
By
Domenica (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
Ohhhhh, this CD is definitely one of my very favorites. Especially because the release of this CD coincided with the finale of a fun and carefree summer of '94... so many beautiful memories! I was lucky to catch Super D.J. Dimitry spin at a mega-outdoor rave in southern California ("Narnia") in August 1994, right after this magical CD was released. Ahhh! The delicious memory of entering the crowd of sweaty, smiling and dancing people, holding balloon flowers and feeling like we were, indeed, true "Dewdrops in the Garden!" All of us witnessing a beautiful sunrise as Super D.J. Dimitry launched into the stunningly fitting "River of Freedom." It truly did feel like the "dawn of freedom" and we were all one for the moment. Deee-Lite's music has the power to unite, excite, and make it ALL RIGHT! Needless to say, after that event, I couldn't stop listening to this CD for the rest of the summer and I still quite often pop it in the deck to this day to lift my spirits when needed. It's groovy musical medicine for the heart, soul, and mind.

Lady Kier is an angelic diva who has true command of all the songs on this CD, which is Deee-lite's best opus: "Bittersweet Loving" is the ultimate "la power de femme" number; "Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest" is a yummy song of seduction; "Music Selector is the Soul Reflector" is one of the best tributes to the sheer power of the D.J. that I've ever heard; and "Picnic in the Summertime" is a sweet ditty that recalls sun-kissed and carefree actvity with a funky beat. But you really can't individually single out the songs on this CD anyway. This work as a whole is a revolutionary piece of art in its ENTIRETY. It's a journey of beauty and love. Buy it, become enraptured and most importantly... DANCE!

P.S.--It is truly a crying shame that Deee-Lite hasn't released anything since! But I'll always cherish this work!
