4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond "Groove is in the Heart."
I'm probably one of the twelve Americans who bothered to keep listening to Deee-lite after they headed to one-hit-wonder-land with the release of their global smash "Groove is in the Heart." 3.0 out of 5 stars Not Their Best, But Worth A Listen
After the disappointing reaction to "Infinity Within" (which I consider their best album) Deee-Lite gave themselves a rave-band makeover. The transition doesn't always work, however. They drop the pianos, guitars, and horns that enhanced their first two albums in favor of a sound rooted entirely in electronics. Not neccessarily a bad thing, but they lost a...

I'm probably one of the twelve Americans who bothered to keep listening to Deee-lite after they headed to one-hit-wonder-land with the release of their global smash "Groove is in the Heart." Mainstream folks may not have known it, but they suffered a loss when they shunned "Dewdrops in the Garden." A step forward from their debut "World Clique" and a departure from the PC-isms of "Infinity Within," Dee-lite's third album is loaded with quirky dance pop that jams a little harder this time around. The trio teams up with DJ Little Louie Vega for the housed-up ditty "Bittersweet Loving," which has never-better vocals from Lady Miss Kier. "Call Me" aggressively palpitates with energy with its deep bass and thumping beats, and they give you a little mid-tempo flava on the sensual "Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest." Granted, this album isn't for mainstream audiences, and while the material sounds appropriate for the clubs, "Dewdrops in the Garden" may be too edgy radio play. But if you want a platter of groovilicious tunes with teeth sharp enough to bite, this joint is worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deee-Changes Are In The Groove, October 7, 2000
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
This is Deee-Lite's last album of new material before they broke up. It sure was nice of them to leave us with a legacy, wasn't it? "Dewdrops" is a radical step away from the message mission that was put on "Infinity Within." This album is more sexy and self-assured, and Kier's voice is as sexy as ever.

It starts off with the hip-hop dance of "Say Ahhh..." a classic in Deee-circles. It's really funky and brilliant. Next, Lady Kier tells that we can move, groove, and "mind melt." "Bittersweet Loving," "River of Freedom," "Somebody," & "When You Told Me You Loved Me," are really funky house-numbers that segue-way nicely into one another, but there's nothing too outstanding about them.

"Stay In Bed, Forget The Rest" is in the same vein as "Say Ahhh..." - very sexy and dancey, another Deee-song for the books. "Call Me" is not a cover of the classic Blondie song, sadly, but the Deee-sters have made their own sassy number with Kier blowing off a loser who hasn't called her, and whose line is always busy. "Why don't you get call-waiting or something?" Kier asks.

The rest of the disc is just pure ecstasy. It's trippy, fun and light-hearted. You may remember "Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector" from the movie "Party Girl" starring Parker Posey. In her hallucinating scene, that's the song! "Sampladelic" is a short little hot number, and "Bring Me Your Love" is a fierce dance hit for all to enjoy.

"Picnic In the Summertime" is a fresh a vibrant song for a day out with your friends and "Apple Juice Kissing" is another safe-sexy song that will make you melt. "Party Happening People" is a cool dub-style track the makes everybody move their feet, and is "DMT".

"What Is This Music" is a poem by Lady Kier that closes out the Deee-adventure, or so we think! Fast forward your CD and you'll hear one interlude that says:

"Dafodille yellow comes into promincense in a florescent fashion It may sound humorous, but it's important and it helps."

Forward some more, and there's a very hot instrumental song that takes your breath away.

And still...fast forward some more! And there is a FAB remix of "Bring Me Your Love."

So if you're a Deee-Lite fan, and don't have this, you are sorely missing out, as this could be their best work together! Plus, all the fab secret tracks on the end make for a cool treat! Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to give ya a mean "Perma-Grin!", November 21, 1999
By
Domenica (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
Ohhhhh, this CD is definitely one of my very favorites. Especially because the release of this CD coincided with the finale of a fun and carefree summer of '94... so many beautiful memories! I was lucky to catch Super D.J. Dimitry spin at a mega-outdoor rave in southern California ("Narnia") in August 1994, right after this magical CD was released. Ahhh! The delicious memory of entering the crowd of sweaty, smiling and dancing people, holding balloon flowers and feeling like we were, indeed, true "Dewdrops in the Garden!" All of us witnessing a beautiful sunrise as Super D.J. Dimitry launched into the stunningly fitting "River of Freedom." It truly did feel like the "dawn of freedom" and we were all one for the moment. Deee-Lite's music has the power to unite, excite, and make it ALL RIGHT! Needless to say, after that event, I couldn't stop listening to this CD for the rest of the summer and I still quite often pop it in the deck to this day to lift my spirits when needed. It's groovy musical medicine for the heart, soul, and mind.

Lady Kier is an angelic diva who has true command of all the songs on this CD, which is Deee-lite's best opus: "Bittersweet Loving" is the ultimate "la power de femme" number; "Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest" is a yummy song of seduction; "Music Selector is the Soul Reflector" is one of the best tributes to the sheer power of the D.J. that I've ever heard; and "Picnic in the Summertime" is a sweet ditty that recalls sun-kissed and carefree actvity with a funky beat. But you really can't individually single out the songs on this CD anyway. This work as a whole is a revolutionary piece of art in its ENTIRETY. It's a journey of beauty and love. Buy it, become enraptured and most importantly... DANCE!

P.S.--It is truly a crying shame that Deee-Lite hasn't released anything since! But I'll always cherish this work!

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 years later..., January 23, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
10 years later and Dee-Lite's Dewdrops in the Garden is still contemporary dance music with progressive lyrical themes and spot on production. The album could benefit from some digital remastering, the sound is a little muted compared with today's crystal clear electronica music but it stands the test of time.

Lady Kier is a beautiful singer and a passable rhymer when she attempts some rapping on Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest. DJ Dmitry and Ani showcase their excellent knob spinning on this, the final of the Dee-Lite albums.

Notes that other people won't mention:
1. It's a great workout disc...from start to finish.
2. Come for the music; stay for the delicious Lady Kier photos. The straight, choppy cut hair style looks good on her. She's absolutely who you'd hit on at your local up all night dance club.
3. The funk and soul undercurrents of these pop-techno tracks were the harbinger of new dance music trends in the nineties. Soulful singers over deep bass lines and silky horn tracks is so Naked Music before Naked Music existed.

5.0 out of 5 stars How do you say Deee-groovy?, June 4, 2002
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
The best of three Deee-Lite albums, sadly it was their last. Lady Kier and Company are often haunted by "Groove is in the Heart" and its such a shame. This album shows the versatility and genius that Deee-Lite had. On songs such as "River of Freedom" and "Somebody" they manage to provide uplifting and intelligent dance music that still holds up to this day. This album is a must for anybody who likes to dance or just wishes they could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deee-lectable, July 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
By far the most senuous of the Deee-lite albums, Dew Drops in The Garden will start off making you dance up a sweat and end up making love. If fun and the global village was the theme of WOrld Clique, social consciousness for Infinity Within, then this album is all about intimacy. Start off with Freedom, when the Lady sings about the ending of a relationship after "building thïs bridge for years." One song that will make you want to snuggle up close is "Stay in bed forget the rest." With her calm, seductive, soulful voice, Lady Kier provides the perfect background for focusing solely on that significant other.

The best track by far, and the danciest, is Call Me. With a great beat, and the Lady's attitude and Kitcshishness endemic of the group this song will have you repeating its Call Me mantra while you move your derriere.

Equally fun is "Apple Juice Kissing" which will truely make you roll your hips.

The problem with this album is that the dance beats are a bit trite, and not extremely original. Also the album has a lot of competing themes. Rave culture, relationships, and sensuality--it doesnt all work. With World Clique that was one theme, global love, and it worked in every song.

But even with its small flaws this album is must for all Deee-Lite fans, and one can see that they are definitely closer to regaining the "Je ne sais quoi" from World Clique.

5.0 out of 5 stars This cd is DEEE-LISH!!!!!!!!!!!, August 18, 2008
This review is from: Dewdrops in the Garden (Audio CD)
I don't think Deee-Lite ever got the recognition that they deserved. This cd has got to be one of their best. Don't get me wrong, I loved World Clique, but there is something about DITG. From "Bittersweet Loving", to "Call Me" and who can forget the beautiful Parker Posey dancing to "Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector" in the movie Party Girl.
Even if you aren't a fan of Deee-Lite, this cd is a MUST!!! We miss you Lady Kier and the boys!
