Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

This book, which attempts to provide ways to introduce youngsters from preschool through grade six to the fundamentals of subject classification, has major flaws. The first sentence explains, "We are in the Information Age." If this is indeed the case, why would we subject students to coloring flowers and attempting to recognize words such as parakeet and octopus and have them attempt to write these words, as they group them on petals of theme flowers? A library is a perfect laboratory situation for learning about arrangement of books. Worksheets, word search, and word unscramble cannot take the place of directed exploration in the library or media center. Some of the drawings such as how to read a bookshelf and illustrations of Boolean operators are helpful, but there are not enough "Information Age" activities to justify purchase. The lack of an index is an additional problem in a book of this type.
