*UPDATE 2*

Well now after a few seasons this is still holding up fairly well. Using some chemical weed block helped a little, and the rubber mulch certainly isn't decomposing, but still I have to weed the beds a couple times per year. Various grasses and weeds still germinate in the leaves/detritus/needles/etc that end up in the mulch and themselves decompose. I think the best solution is to hire landscapers <g>

*END UPDATE 2*

*UPDATE*

By the end of the season some weeds had managed to grow through the fabric (germinate on top and send roots down through the fabric). Pulling out the weeds did not result in any tears/rips unlike the experience I had with the less costly fabric where pulling out weeds occassionally caused tears. I was cautious with chemical weed-block because of a previous experience where it damaged several of my plantings, and will likely try again with chemical weed-block in smaller quantities to try and avoid some of the weed germination next season.

*END UPDATE*

I bought the first roll of this after reading the reviews to replace some fabric. I bought the second roll after seeing the thickness and (apparent) durability of the first. I have about 1100-1200 sq ft that I'm going to cover to start with and I expect to need very close to all of two rolls.

I had previously been using bark mulch and bought this fabric to go under new rubber mulch. I had to replace the big box fabric primarily for two reasons 1) fabric had ripped in places as a result of removing a rosebush that had gone completely wild and 2) many weeds had started growing from the top side of the fabric through the fabric into the ground due to decomposing bark mulch.

I read reviews about this product and ordered two rolls even though these were costly. The lawn professional who came to install this fabric was amazed at it's quality. He noted down the name of this product. Even when it was being installed, it was obvious that no weed is going to have the strength to pop out through this thick fabric. It has been 1 year, and there is ZERO weeds in the area where this fabric is installed. This fabric looks and feels and is thicker and better than those fabrics which are guaranteed to work for 3 years. Highly recommended for those who want to not just control weeds, but completely eliminate weeds.

I bought this fabric sight unseen in spring of 2010 because of the good reviews. We started in the front yard in a small area where a large tree was removed, with good results. We covered it with bark and grew ground cover over it, with various small plants in between. There has been some degradation but nothing unexpected considering the extreme heat and direct sunlight (up to 115 degree temps, and hot southern CA sun most of the year). Very few things survive in our front yard, even drought-hardy plants. Perhaps that's why there are very few instances of grass sprouting, usually just at the edges.

We have continued to plant various areas of the yard every year, using this fabric to block weeds, with the same good results. Last spring we covered our entire front yard with it, and planted sprigs of ground cover every three feet. The ground cover has grown in beautifully, with no weeding.

Buy the 500 box of anchor staples/pins and make sure you get the longer, better ones. You'll pay about half per staple than buying many smaller packs.

Tip: You can change around the plants if you cut an "X" in the fabric when you dig a hole for a new plant, and fold the flaps up underneath. That way if you remove the plant you pull the flaps back out and patch the hole.

Update 10/27/2013: The whole yard still looks great and weed-free, planted with ground cover over the paper, and other neighbors are starting to paper over their yards as well. We're still very happy with this product. Any exposed areas can be protected by covering with bark while letting plants fill in, but it's not necessary.

This is not your typical cheep ground cover that your local home improvement stores sell. The cloth is thick and weeds have no chance of coming through. I would highly recommend this product to everyone. Shipment arrived within one week from purchase.

I'm on my second roll of this material. I bought a house with a lot of rock landscaping that had a barrier down but had tons of dirt mixed in with the rock. Weeds galore. So, I started what turned out to be an insanely time consuming and dirty project to separate the rocks and dirt and reposition the weed barrier. Of course, I damaged the old barrier and had to find some new. The local home improvement store products were so thin I just didn't want to waste my time putting that down and then have to replace it a short time later. I've had this stuff down for over a year now and am impressed. I've only had a handful of weeds that have miraculously just grown on the rocks (roots did not go through), and a few that grow in that thin line where the barrier ends at a sidewalk or fence. I'm pretty impressed.

Pros:
- Heavy grade fabric
- Even though it is woven strands it does not fray much when you cut it to length/size due to the woven/spun backside
- The side meant to face the dirt has a woven/spun material that grips the dirt

Cons:
- If you ever do have to pull it up the woven side will have a LOT of dirt stuck to it
- May want to consider the 6ft wide version of this as you lose a bit overlapping and have to spend a lot of money on those stupid landscape pins. I have not found a cheap source for those.
