Food Spills Out as You Pour Into It --- Wide at Base -- Not Easy to Clean,
By
This review is from: Dexas 10-Inch Silicone Pop Colander, Red/White (Kitchen)
After 15 years our metal colander broke but we still we able to jerry-rig it and kept using it, but then we did a long distance move to a small home, so the broken one was relegated to the trash bin rather than transport it so far. Upon arriving at our new home I began to hunt for a colander and had trouble finding a stainless steel or high quality metal colander but I found this. My first impression was the collapsable design was perfect for our small kitchen with its little storage space. Kudos for that. However, if a thing is not useful for its main purpose it stinks. There are two problems with the design of this product. First, the feet go out pretty wide and it appears larger than you realize. It barely fits in my sink. Second and worse, as I pour boiling water and pasta into the bowl, the food starts to fall off the sides and into the sink because the silicone requires weight pressing on it to open up and go downward. In order to not lose all our food I have to pour with a special slow technique, which is not always easy with a giant heavy pot of very hot, steaming water. I'm used to a metal colander that gets one, fast big dumping into. It can also be a bit of a pain to clean if what you drained is messy such as fruit pieces with small leaves, that get caught in the moving silicone, as you wash it, it is moving around. Also since the food goes on the long legs you have to clean those up as well. Update: a second problem is when pouring food out such as pouring pasta into a bowl the silicone pops flat and the food flies across the room, well at least a foot or more... I loved the idea of it, but now even the others in my family are complaining. Now I am off to hunt down a stainless steel, durable old-fashioned colander. I haven't been able to find one in local stores but have found several options here on Amazon. Why didn't I think of Amazon before? Update: We bought a stainless steel colander by OXO from Amazon and it is great. It has no legs so nests nicely inside a bowl in the cupboard while being stored so it doesn't hog space either. |
