It's awesome.. for a couple of weeks (one lasted almost a month). Then it dies. Not just the lights.. but none would even charge. I purchased two.. and then got two replacements.. so 4 out of 4.. lemons. The design is fabulous and fun, the actual product.. sucs :(

So my cable worked for 3 weeks and then it sporatically worked for 1 week, now it wont charge either my wife's or my iPhone.

So i contact Dexim to ask them what they want to do.

They contact me saying they are going to send me a UPS shipping label via email to print off and return the damaged unit.

I never received the mail, i check my junk mail and my spam box on my email account. I asked the customer service rep to send it to an alternative email address, same thing.

I believe they never sent the email and they have no intention of offering me a replacement cable.

So Dexim's response is "f-you" and buy another one.

Ive learned my lesson, I'll NEVER buy a Dexim product ever again, complete crap product, and worse customer service.

Buyers be warned.

Ordered this product a month ago. It worked fine the first few days, then I noticed the lights started to go out before my phone was finished charging. Then a few weeks later it stopped working all together. It was cool while it worked, but VERY disappointing as a product's life should DEFINITELY be longer than a few weeks.. Save your money, its not worth it.

I bought these for my whole iFamily of nerds for stocking stuffers. They love them. They especially enjoy the fact that they go dark when the phone or iPad is charged. What's not to love? They work exactly like the cables from Apple, but with visual feedback. Nerd-up Cowboy -- these are fun!

CRAFTSMANSHIP, FIT & FINISH and MATERIALS
This is a relatively inexpensive plastic device, made of relatively inexpensive plastic. That being said, it's perfectly suited for it's intended usage. The fact that they were able to fit all of the necessary electronics into the only somewhat enlarged male USB plug tells me there was some investment in miniaturization here. The cable itself feels durable but stiffer than I'd like. I can only assume the stiffness was a necessary tradeoff to keep the wiring and electroluminescent elements safe from harm during extreme flexion.

USING THE DEVICE
The design is straightforward and operates like any other iDevice charge/sync cable. What makes it special is of course the 'chasing' interactive lights that give an immediate visual indication of the charge status of your device. The intended effect is that you are seeing the 'energy' flow into your device. Building on that analogy, when your battery level is quite low the 'energy' flows faster, and as your battery 'fills', the flow slows to a trickle and ultimately stops altogether when charging is complete and your battery is 'full'.

My only wish is that they would release a black version with green illumination, and make the green 'greener', as the light is much bluer in reality than is depicted on packaging and in photos.

RECOMMENDATION
This cable does add some useful features (the ability to visually ascertain charge status at a glance, the ability to locate your device in low-light situations, etc.), but let's face it, at the end of the day this is about the fun and wow factor. In that regard this cable is a winner, and is guaranteed to draw nerds like catnip, only for nerds. Nerd-nip?

I bought this for my son's birthday in April. Lots of fun, the light is great and it was a big hit. Now suddenly it has stopped working. The cord lights up for about thirty seconds when plugged into the wall but the devices I've tried it in don't charge (iPad, iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4s).

This is very disappointing as it was not inexpensive. Tough to rate something well when it does not last more than 2 months.

Just bought a couple of these for gifts to myself and others. They are tremendously, delectably, nerdy and delightful.

This product is really two parts--a base USB power supply or "brick" and a USB cable. I will address the two parts separately here.

The "brick" seems to be a properly designed but fairly straightforward device along the line of a handily travel-proof switch-mode USB power brick accepting 100-240VAC @ 50-60Hz at the input via a 2-pronged Edison male connector (aka USA wall plug) and producing 5VDC at 2100mA from a single USB Type A female socket. 2100mA is enough current to charge anything up to and including an iPad, another big plus: one brick to rule them all. Also nice for travel: the power prongs fold into protective slits in the brick, and they do so with a satisfying snapping noise. The brick weighs 1.9 ounces. It is 1 11/16" square and sticks out 1 5/16" from the wall when it's plugged in. It has its own SKU: DCA257.

The magic sauce appears to be entirely in the USB cable, which is available under separate cover for $19.95. (SKU for the cable is DWA063.) This cable has a standard iPod male connector on one end and a standard USB Type A male on the other end; the USB end is augmented vs a "normal" USB connector, being about 2 3/8" long and including what we presume to be the brains that provide the magic sauce. By "magic sauce" I mean that there are dozens of little lights included in the entire length of the cable which scroll or chase (or whatever you might call it) toward the device you are charging at a rate proportional to the rate of delivery of charge...quickly at first, and then slowing as the device reaches full charge, at which time the scrolling lights in the cable turn off.... The cable is 35" long from the tip of the iPod male to the tip of the USB male and weighs exactly 1 ounce. It is a little bit stiffish, so, working purely by eyeball and intuition, I would recommend avoiding a bend radius less than 1/2". It ships with a little grey Velcro (tm) cable tie, which is nice but marginally annoying since it is one of those cable ties that has a Velcro (tm) loop that attaches it to the cable as well as one that holds the cable itself--one tends to pull the tie off the cable when futzing about with the Velcro. A minor gripe.

Because a switch mode power supply under zero demand is effectively OFF, that seems like the big energy saving step to me. C'est solide. Because a fully-charged battery would not be drawing any current anyway, though, I am not exactly sure how the cable is supposed to save energy--other than turning off the energy-efficient lights in the cable itself, which were not needed in the first place--so claims of greenness and energy savings seem a little disingenuous to me as far as the cable goes. That said, they do use a switch-mode power supply, and the amount of energy consumed by the cable is comparatively tiny. And the scrolling lights are way cool, so I am going with 4 stars despite what strikes me as silly advertising along the "green" line. Read more ›
