DEXTER Season 5 is the best of the seasons so far. While last season was dominated by the presence of John Lithgow, the shining star of and surprise of this season is the presence of Julia Stiles as Lumen, an abused victim who escapes her abusers and pledges to join Dexter in 'stabbing out' her revenge. The writing is tighter and the subplots or sidebars are far more interesting: the many different love entanglements keep your head spinning. The fellow workers with Dexter (Michael C.Hall) remain the same - Jennifer Carpenter (the real Mrs Hall), Desmond Harrington, David Zayas, Lauren Velez, CS Lee, and James Remar - all better than ever. But the added attraction characters this year include Maria Doyle Kennedy (from The Tudors) as the nanny for Dexter's son, and Jonny Lee Miller as a twisted Inspirational Coach.

The premise of following a serial killer who chooses as his victims criminals who would have otherwise not been punished is by now, after four seasons, a character we can all understand - emotionally, motivationally, and as a brilliant law enforcement team member. But the coups of the season was the addition of Julia Stiles who does some of the finest work of her career here. Enough said. The suspense is what drives this show! Grady Harp, December 10

Firstly, this is the best show on television, plain and simple. I came to it late, discovering just a little over two years ago, and so I've had to catch up - I completely agree with the many, many reviews on different sites which really go after the quality of the DVDs for "Dexter", by the way. If you can get Blu, do so. Now, a series about a serial killer didn't quite seem like my kind of trip when I first began watching "Dexter", but this show quickly pulls you in with excellent acting, writing and directing. (Trivia: Are any of you old enough to remember the geeky guy who lets his haunted car, Christine, take over his life and get even at everybody else, in the Stephen King classic, "Christine"? That actor, Keith Gordon, is the same man directing this series. Anyhow!) Michael C. Hall is nothing less than superb as the tortured title character, and he continues hitting it out of the ballpark this season, despite having spent the majority of this last year or so sick as a dog and undergoing chemotherapy in real life for leukemia. (His agent says that he's doing well, right now). As we all know from decades of anti-heroes, the audience has to like a killer (Warren Beatty as Clyde Barrow, for instance), or watching this type of show is going to leave you with a - well, weird feeling: I've seen shows, both fictional and biographical, where the 'hero' was so revolting an individual that I couldn't figure out why anybody thought he/she deserved a show, and I had to take a shower after watching the piece of garbage.Read more ›

I never imagined I of all people would be a Dexter fan!
The reason I write this is because I've never been a fan of horror movies & am not that great watching blood & guts....in fact, I most avoid both of these!!
But, a close friend kept raving about Dexter & I gave the show a shot.
Even at Season 5 - when most shows start to lose steam & sometimes viewers - I am still glued to the screen & always left wanting more Dexter!
I was wondering how Season 5 would handled (having to change this due to people watching season's out of order) - the drama with Rita & I feel like they did an awesome job!
I promise Season 5 will not disappoint the die hard Dexter fan!
Or, even if you are a first time viewer....you will quickly become a fan! (Although, I highly recommend watching Dexter in all its glory from the very beginning - Season 1-5!)
Season 6 can't come fast enough since I don't subscribe to Showtime!

This is not a complete review of season 5 because it's not over yet, but I had to post this any way. Every time I think this show can't get any better....they prove me wrong. Season 5 is heading for a total bloodbath ending. There are a couple story lines that are heading towards a bloody conclusion in the finale. They really upped the ante with the SCUMBAG "villians" this season. Jonny Miller is the sleazy inspirational speaker , Jordan Chase, with his entourage of serial killing childhood friends. He is the MOST hatable villain yet in 5 seasons. Peter Weller is great as the dirty private detective who was working for Quinn. But season 5 belongs to Julia Stiles...... I was never a big fan of hers (except for 10 Things I Hate About You)...but she has been AWESOME and totally believable as the one surviving "victim" of Jordan Chase's psycho mob. Dexter saves her and befriends her and together they start to wipe out Jordan Chase's mob. I don't know how this is gonna all end....but I can't wait for Sunday nights !!

I've been a rabid Dexter fan ever since Netflix put the first two seasons on Instant Play. Since then I've scrambled to find Season 3 and Season 4 episodes at the library and Hastings, and then waited impatiently for Season 5 to be released on Amazon.

After the great Season 4 run with John Lithgow and the stunner finale, I couldn't wait to start on Season 5 (via instant play from Amazon). Unfortunately, Season 5 is (so far) anticlimactic and even (however briefly) boring in some episodes. Some great production and storylines are still there, but...

-The writing isn't nearly as good: Dialogue is cliched and story lines jump and jerk from high-energy action to plodding explanatory material. E.g. the Fuentes murders story with Debra is engaging but gets put on hold while the "informant's" (frankly more bothersome than worrisome) acute interest in Dexter Doings alternates with the more interesting (but unevenly developed) Barbie in a Drum plot. The languishing Fuentes subplot is abruptly resolved and morphs into a cop's Wrongful Scapegoat storyline that has LaGuerta acting out of character.

-How much longer can we suspend our disbelief? The messy murders are piling up and it's hard to accept that Dexter has the time or resources to make all the crime scenes spic and span before the "good guys" arrive to take evidence. Why is everyone doing the, "Oh, ya, that Trinity killer thing -- that we've apparently dropped as an investigation, even though we're cops with axes to grind"...? How is it that hotel guests don't notice gruesome activities in a hotel room with a busted-down door? (Who fixed the door so that a kill room isn't discovered?

I believe the new season (season 6) begins october 2. You can watch all five seasons on showtime on demand for free if you subscribe to showtime. We've been watching season 5 over and over and over again. Definitely the best season yet.

Region Free?
It's region 1. If you are playing it on your computer rather than a TV/DVD combo, then my tip is to investigate the VLC media player.
