5.0 out of 5 stars A superb DEXTER
Every moody chord of every track of DEXTER emotes the often dark and always rich tone of this outstandingly well-produced series. 3.0 out of 5 stars Rap??
I absolutely love the haunting melody that plays over the end credits of the show, but sadly the version included on this CD is obscured with a rap song. Why can't they just give us the beautiful melody without the stupid rap??

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb DEXTER, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Dexter: Music From the Television Series (Audio CD)
Every moody chord of every track of DEXTER emotes the often dark and always rich tone of this outstandingly well-produced series. Put yourself in Dexter's shoes for an hour of exceptional background music (with the excpetion of Any Williams' Born Free track). With more than a little resemblance to the BATMAN 2 soundtrack (remember all of those strings for Catwoman's slinky moves?) and a bit of Tim Burton as well, just, well, more grown up. Did I do a Google on the composers? you bet, and found a rich history of other work that looks worthy of checking out.

It seems less-than-Jake to just call this a soundtrack as much as an iconic album: for a subculture of soundtrack freaks, here's a killer album (good pun). For casual listeners, here's a jazzy aural dose of Dex between episodes and seasons. Artistically, I'd rack it alongside A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS as a stand-alone album. eerie Indian strains weave through classic movie adventure/horror passages: more Trans Siberian Orchestra than tv tunery. A perfect companion for pulling up a great book on a winter's night. It sounds as great on my office boom box as it does on a bigger system: nice bass; rich flavor. This is the art of soundtracking that is 100% perfect.

A few quotes from Dexter's first season make it warmly creepy, and for me, a guy who listens in the car while on those dark, long drives, this is wonderful, wonderful mood music, from Miami's latin sound through incidental pieces.

I'll admit to quickly downloading several tracks from iTunes: if you hate rap as much as I do, skip at least one track: an itunes exclusive rap bit that sounds like a 30 ROCK Tracy Morgan parody... of inane rap. But wished they'd have included these on the CD, GRRRRRRRRRR.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great TV soundtrack, June 21, 2008

The "Dexter" soundtrack is very good. The CD includes the fabulous main theme of the show by Rolfe Kent, plus many other snippets of music and vocal clips from the series. Highlights include the peppy, electronic "Uruapan Breaks" by Kinky; the Latin-infused "Flores Para Ti" by Raw Artistic Soul, featuring Rafael Cortez; the energetic "Con Mi Guaguanco" by Ray Armondo; "Perfidia" by Mambo All-Stars; and the score tracks "Escalation," "Deborah Loves Rudy/The House," "Photo Albums," "Courting the Night," "Hide Your Tears," "Astor's Birthday Party," and "Blood Theme."

Most of the tracks are outstanding. The only minor problem is that the majority of the songs are only a minute or so long, which is a trend commonly found in TV or movie soundtracks. Still, the CD does a good job of capturing the macabre, Miami feel of the Showtime series.

One fun thing to note: The album comes packages in a blood-red plastic CD case, which isn't something you can see on the Amazon.com page. That in itself is pretty funny, and it's almost worth buying the CD just for that reason.

Overall, if you love the show "Dexter," I think you'll enjoy this soundtrack.

It's a TV soundtrack, so some of the clips aren't full-length songs; some are the same song done different ways; adn not all the music from the series is represented here. That said, it's fantastic. I listened to it several times, and I'm not much for music, so that should tell you something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic ... except for ..., March 10, 2010

Yes, this is an excellent soundtrack and I say not just for fans of the show. A real work of art. But like some of the other reviewers here, I did not appreciate the completely out of place last track - the hip hop version of the end credits turned into a 'song', "Die This Way". I guess for people who are into rapping etc, it might be OK, but to me it was out of place and a terrible ending for an otherwise flawless work of art.

Interesting to note that last track was done by Jon Licht and Daniel Licht, whereas the other 'Mood' tracks were all just done by Daniel Licht. Google informs us that Jon is Daniel's nephew and also works on the show. If the producers do further albums of Dexter music - and I hope they do - please just leave the token/gratuitous rap out.

Bought this after buying the books. What better Valentine's Day gift. The talking is a bit creepy if you haven't watched the show but the Cuban music is fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, October 29, 2007
This review is from: Dexter: Music From the Television Series (Audio CD)
The music from Dexter is such an integral part of the show and the soundtrack gives you everything. I started to get worried when I heard someone rapping over the main theme but after a few listens it's actually really well done. If you are a fan of the show you know you have to own this.

The ones that have watched the two TV seasons already know the quality of the series and this soundtrack is a credit to the show.

You will find an excellent selection of tracks, from the Cuban rhythms to the original score by Daniel Licht, with every single moment taking you back into the series. However, unlike other soundtracks that do not stand by themselves and only make sense accompanied by the mental images of the TV show, here you will discover an original musical ambience that gains a new life that can be enjoyed separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not for everyone....but for those who understand its a masterpiece, October 3, 2011
This review is from: Dexter: Music From the Television Series (Audio CD)

Dexter the character as we know it personifies the deep seeded darkness in every human being. To some these dark shadows are unknown and few knew these feelings as a part of them, however there are few of us who are slaves to their dark passenger and they are villains of the Dexter series. I like Dexter as he justifies his negative actions by taking out monsters who are able to escape the law.

The reason I talk about the series in this review is because the soundtrack is the emotional thread of what the series wants to convey. Dexter's soundtrack is dark and introspecting. The nuances and the crescendos are very well crafted and deliver the precise emotional tone.

It would be hard to comprehend the various flavors of this music without the context of the series. To me certain pieces of the music are a master piece. Surprisingly the reason Dexter series caught my attention was because of the strangely appealing title music. I found the music very intriguing and started watching the series.

Great Job Daniel Licht
