Dexter's Laboratory Season 1

Editorial Reviews

Deep in the depths of his secret laboratory, boy genius Dexter computes, experiments, invents and builds incredible creations like mom robots, interdimensional portals, talking animals, brain replacements and stealth dodgeball devices, until his ditzy sister Dee Dee ruins his overly-executed plans … if only he could fit her into a test tube! These awesome first episodes from the award-winning hit series also include the heroic stories of The Justice Friends and Dial M for Monkey – super heroes who snuff out evil like it was the flame on a Bunsen burner! From the acclaimed director of Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack and The Powerpuff Girls, this 13-Episode 2-Disc DVD Collection proves Dexter is hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gloom and Doom and Things Go Boom... August 3, 2010
Format:DVD
In Dexter's Labratory Lives The Smartest Boy You've Ever Seen! This is a classic series from the 1990's and from what many consider to be the peak of Cartoon Network's programming. Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, the mind that would later bring us such classic series as Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003-05), Dexter's Lab is a truly wonderful series on so many levels. Finally being properly released on DVD this complete first season set will contain the following 13 twenty two minute episodes spread across 2-discs:

DISC 1
1 Deedeemensional, Dial M for Monkey: Magmanamus, Maternal Combat
2 Dexter Dodgeball, Dial M For Monkey: Rasslor, Dexter's Assistant
3 Dexter's Rival, Dial M For Monkey: Simion, Old Man Dexter
4 Double Trouble, Dexter's Lab: A Story, Changes
5 Jurassic Pooch, Dial M For Monkey: Orgon Grindor, Dimwit Dexter
6 Dee Dee's Room, Dial M For Monkey: Huntor, The Big Sister
7 Star Spangled Sidekicks, The Justice Friends: TV Superpals, Gameover
8 Babysitter Blues, The Justice Friends: Valhallen's Room, Dream Machine

DISC 2
9 Dollhouse Drama, The Justice Friends: Krunk's Date, The Big Cheese
10 Way of DeeDee, The Justice Friends: Say Uncle Sam, Tribe Called Girl
11 Spacecase, The Justice Friends: Ratman, Dexter's Debt
12 The Justice Friends: Bee Where?, Mandarker
13 Inflata DeeDee, The Justice Friends: Can't Nap, Monstory

In all the thirteen episodes are comprised of 38 individual stories which adds up to 281 minutes of Dexter. There will be English Subtitles and video will obviously be Standard Full Frame.

I can't say how classic this series truly is. Who could forget characters such as Dexter's rival the nasal voiced Mandark? His lacksadaisical sister DeeDee always interfering with his experiments? Or Dexter's Mom and Dad who never had a clue of his secret lab or of what was really going on in the house. On top of all the delightful Dexter centric episodes are the episodes that focus on The Justice Friends or the episodes that feature the space monkeys.

I'm surprised that no special features are currently listed for this release and hope that changes in the near future (The similar and recently released Johnny Bravo set had some wonderful features including commentaries by the creators and voice actors). At any rate it will be great for fans to be able to at long last own these episodes on a proper DVD set and let's just hope that enough people buy this to justify the release of the rest of the series. Thanks for your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scientifically Spectacular October 16, 2010
Format:DVD
What a fine day... for science ! And it should be when you own a copy of "Dexter's Laboratory: Season 1" on DVD for the first time. The first 13 episodes stars the little fellow with a big brain, Dexter, and his spontaneous sister, Dee Dee, in the following episodes:

"Maternal Combat" - Mother is feeling under the weather, so Dexter invents a robot version of her to cook, clean, and do whatever he says.
"Dexter Dodgeball" - Tired of being pelted by endless dodgeballs, Dexter invents a robo-suit that will let him play HIS way !
"Dexter's Rival" - Introducing Mandark, who has bigger smarts and a better lab. But he has a big weakness to Dexter's advantage: Dee Dee !
"Old Man Dexter" - In order to watch a late-night movie, Dexter makes a device that will make him an adult. Unfortunately, it turns him into an old-timer.
"The Big Sister" - Dee Dee eats an experimental cookie that makes her gigantic. It's up to Dexter to fix this mess.
"Babysitter Blues" - Dexter has a crush on his babysitter, Lisa, but he has to find a way to break up with the boyfriend she already has.
"Inflata-Dee-Dee" - Dee Dee dons Dexter's inflation suit and it becomes a sky-high problem for Dexter.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. In between the episodes, there are two superheroic spin-offs: "Dial M for MONKEY" and "The Justice Friends". "Dial M for MONKEY" is about the secret adventures of Dexter's experimental pet monkey who becomes a super-powered monkey and fights evil villains and creatures with the luscious Agent Honeydew by his side in the following adventures:

"Magmanamus" - A gigantic lava man wreaks havoc on the city, but all he wants to do is go to sleep.
"Wrasslor" - Heroes from every corner of the galaxy are called forth for the main event against the worst opponent ever. When everyone else fails, MONKEY must step forth and defeat him.
"Orgon Grindor" - A hypnotizing hurdy-gurdy attempts to make MONKEY commit crimes. Agent Honeydew must put MONKEY out of his trance.

The other spin-off, "The Justice Friends", is the comedic capers of three heroes - Major Glory, Val Hallen, and Krunk - under one roof. The episodes include:

"TV Super Pals" - After a long day of crime-fighting, the three heroes race home to watch a little television.
"Krunk's Date" - Krunk falls in love with a woman that looks just like him, but what he doesn't know is that she's the enemy.
"Can't Nap" - Val invites a new hero, White Tiger, over to his place. But Major Glory thinks otherwise.

There seems to be a few slight miscalculations on this 2-disc DVD set. For instance, the episode listing seems to be inaccurate, for reasons unknown. And there are no other special features on this DVD like a retrospective by creator Genndy Tartakofsky (Of course, that depends if you own any of the "Samurai Jack" and/or "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" DVD sets already).

Well, that's about it for now, but get this, there is a new series called "Sym-Bionic Titan" which is co-created by Genndy and a couple of his colleagues. It's about three youths from another world who try to blend into society and fight evil by transforming into huge robots. So, don't miss it !

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best... September 14, 2010
Format:DVD
At last, one of the very best animated shows ever will finally be released on DVD. I have already pre-ordered mine! Dexter's family is hilarious, the mom who always wears rubber gloves to avoid any and all germs, the dad who fancies himself maybe a little more, say an FBI agent, and of course, Dexter's little sister, DeeDee, who is always getting into Dexter's stuff, as any little sister would.
