Gelles has written a good cookbook with tasty recipes. The reviewer before based her review on the peek inside amazon provides, and unfortunately has based her review on a misconception. 3.0 out of 5 stars Impractical recipes but good info
I found the book's info on diabetes to be fine but the recipes themselves were nothing I'd ever remotely consider preparing. I guess the word that comes to mind is "yuppie." By that, I'm thinking the person who might read this book would probably be a fairly privileged person, not a practical person of ordinary background, "fur sure." If you think "Creamy chipotle...

Gelles has written a good cookbook with tasty recipes. The reviewer before based her review on the peek inside amazon provides, and unfortunately has based her review on a misconception. Gelles does provide a complete nutritional breakdown for each recipe, but oddly, it's in the back of the book starting on page 362. I don't know why the nutritional information wasn't put on each page with the recipe, one of my Mayo clinic cookbooks does this also, which I find inconvenient and thus my four stars.

It would be much easier to pick up the book, see a recipe, and have the nutritional information on the same page, rather than having to look it up in back. That being said, the recipes are good. I especially like the great shakes section, where she gives several spice mixes that are easy to mix and then shake on chicken or meat for different flavors. The recipes are well laid out, easy to read, the ingredients basic and easy to find in any grocery store.

Gelles also provides alternatives in most recipes to either reduce the fat or the protein. She also gives menu suggestions, such at serve this chicken with the past on page 232 and the tri color salad on page 141 (just an example, not sure of the actual page numbers)

I have cooked over a dozen of the recipes from this book. All delicious. All fairly quick. Not hard to follow at all. I highly recommend this book.

As an owner of many cookbooks this was a nice find for me. As a newly diagnosed diabetic, it has a lot of great recipes that I'm sure I will add to my recipe rotation for myself and for my family! This was a keeper though I'm not sure I would buy it new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased, February 6, 2011

This is a good cook book for a couple of reasons. It gives alternate ways to prepare dishes based on other health issues that one might have, such as those watching sodium intake or fat intake or limiting their carbs.

The reason the author put the nutritional values at the back of the book was so that those that need to restrict sodium, carbs or iron etc can go to the back of the book and look down the list for the recipes with the lowest sodium/iron/carb count and easily find them.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book and I'm not even diabetic, April 25, 2010
This review is from: Diabetes Cooking for Everyone: 250 All-Natural, Low-Glycemic Recipes to Nourish and Rejuvenate (Paperback)
When cooking, I like to try to avoid using too much sodium; this book is fantastic for that. The recipes are simple, and it's great to see such a nutritionally specific diet have so much versatility. I picked this book up on a whim in a drug store, because I was looking for a copy of Bon Appetit and they didn't sell it. I flipped opened to an appetizer page and the recipes for "Curried Shrimp" and for "Scallops with Essences of Orange and Rosemary" got me interested enough to try it out. Great buy, even if you're just watching your diet and not diabetic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Impractical recipes but good info, November 22, 2011

I found the book's info on diabetes to be fine but the recipes themselves were nothing I'd ever remotely consider preparing. I guess the word that comes to mind is "yuppie." By that, I'm thinking the person who might read this book would probably be a fairly privileged person, not a practical person of ordinary background, "fur sure." If you think "Creamy chipotle spread on cucumber slices" sounds great, then you might like the recipes better than I do.

I would much prefer having a recipe book of foods we eat every day but ones that are healthy versions of those foods. Take spaghetti for example. Or how about a nice 5 alarm chili? Most of us eat these simple basic foods often enough and then one day we learn we're type-2 diabetic and suddenly the old foods are off limits. I'd really like to see a cookbook give steps necessary to prepare a healthier version of these familiar dishes and perhaps list serving sizes and such things for a standard 2000 calorie diet so we can actually adapt it to our daily meals and actually use it to help restore our health.

I don't want to dream I'm one of the wealthy elite by reading impractical recipies that no one really likes, but with exotic ingredients. Rather, tell me how to prepare my standard meals but healthier and better. I know I would prepare foods like that, but surely nothing at all from this book. Sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars SEE INSIDE before you buy. No nutritional information, just exchanges!, November 14, 2009
This review is from: Diabetes Cooking for Everyone: 250 All-Natural, Low-Glycemic Recipes to Nourish and Rejuvenate (Paperback)
glad amazon has "see inside" before we buy. hard to believe, but there is no standard nutritional breakdown, only diabetic exchanges! it must be approved by the A.D.A., lol.
how can folks make informed decisions on diet if all we get is a gi rating (hi/low) and diabetic exchanges??
i guess it could be a glitch in the version the publisher put on "see inside" and in the actual book you get the info, but taking no chances. i need all the info because i have more to consider than just diabetes.
some of the recipes sounded pretty good too.
